Title: Going alone
Post by: hobodan on Monday, March 29, 2010, 15:51:21
I'm a bit of a loner when it comes to footy.

how many of you would go to footy on your own?

I'd like to get to more away games but fuel cost can be pricey on your own. Has anyone been on the coach to an away game on your own? Or is that just wrong?!

thirty something man

Gone to quite a few on my own over the years. Now more often than not meet up with someone off here or MOS in the pub or at the game. Have still travelled to Carlisle, Hudders, and Hartlepool there and back on my own this season.

I've been on my Jack Jones....a fair few times...it's alright on SAS travel, because you can just sleep. I've usually got a hangover so it helps....waking moments can be filled by an earpiece.

Generally though, I wouldn't necessarily fancy doing an HPool on me tod.

I've been to away games on the SAS coach on my own. Biggest potential problem is having to sit next to some random weirdo, though no doubt they think the same about you. I kind of enjoy it, you can do your own thing and read a book or watch a video on the way there and back, or just sleep.

Used to get on the train on my own and see Town away when I was at Uni - meeting people there.

Drove to Brighton play-offs on my own, got absolutely soaking on the walk to the ground, had an argument with a bloke in the car park after the game (can't remember what about, I was just annoyed bout something ... ), then broke all speed limits on the road home.

Not that much fun driving on your own really, specially not long distances.

Are you dropping hints hobodan?

I remember standing on my own in the Merlin, before a game against Shitty waiting for my brother to arrive. Some strange bloke asks me if I'm Si Pie from the TEF.

This is one of many things that happens when you go to football alone.

my footy mates stopes going years ago. Get to most home games & local away games pretty much always on my own, drag my daughter along sometimes but she's not really interested.

Been to watch villa a few times as have a villa fan mate! Lovely ground.

people are overated

When I used to go on my own in the early/mid 80's, it was because the lads who went in the late 70's had all dropped off after Newport.

Hence you could find a stanchion to lean on either in the TE or on the Bank if sunny, all to yourself...quite strange having been raised on fairly regular gates of 25000+ not that many years previously. I'd actually been in bigger reseve crowds than some of our Div 4 attendances/.

What happend after Newport??

We got relegated to Div 4....a lot of lads got nicked, and we shed 1500 to 2000 regulars quite rapidly.

Newport was a new low.  I felt sick to my stomach.

Most of my friends stopped going because they were priced out of the game.

Went on my own for years then bribed my son into going but he's started to see the light.    :bye:

Newport away in 82 was a real low, only compairable to the promotion/double relegation debacle in 90.

Title: Re: Going alone
Post by: DiV on Monday, March 29, 2010, 18:17:10
I've been on my own a few times.

I used to go with a mate but he started playing football on saturdays, so I went on my todd for a bit but then started meeting the TEF lot in the pub but still ended up sitting on my own.

Working till 2 on a saturday has some what changed my saturdays but I still sit in the same seat but the for the last 2 seasons I've actually had season ticket holders next to me - which makes it alot better!

I went away to Torquay on my own on the coach once, the mate who I usually go with has family down there so was staying a few days.

They over booked (!!) the coach by one, so they came onto coach 3 and asked if anyone was traveling on their own and wouldnt mind moving to coach one.

So I did, and ended up sat at the front with the regulars who have all been going on that coach one since about 1867. That was an experience!

Went to Orient this season on the supporters coach, on my own. Wasn't too bad (though I was sat next to a grumpy fatty). Kept drifting off only for Iris to come round for one reason or another and wake me up. "Scratch card?", "driver's tip", etc etc. I met up with various people there though.

I have done that for a few times and if you're doing it in style, it can only be the last train out of Paddington at around 11.30. Fell asleep on that once after a QPR game and ended up in Chippenham. Quite often go away on my own but you usually meet some in the pub or ground that you know

alright Romeo, its not 1998 any more so "its all gravy" shouldn't really be aired.

I've driven to a few away days on my own, last season went to Aldershot and Hereford on me jack, but met up with people there.

The last game I can remember watching on my own was the Play-off final V Leicester. I'd just moved away from Swindon and bought my ticket on my own. Didn't matter though, as everyone around me was as excited as I was!

Title: Re: Going alone
Post by: Gelbfüßler on Tuesday, March 30, 2010, 08:13:45
I've been on my own for most of the last 2 seasons as mates have decided they can't be doing with paying money to watch football when they can watch Premier League on the telly in the pub and drink beer at the same time. Have a season ticket on half way in the South Stand but never sit in my seat. Usually go and sit towards the Townend as it's not as far to walk. Usually fine to find a seat unless we play Norwich or Leeds and I have to sit on the concrete ledge at the back of the stand and look grumpy.

Never been away on my own though (only do 3 or 4 a season). Mates seem to be perfectly happy to pay the £100+ for an away game.

The only time I have been to football on my own this season was to Southend, I actually enjoyed the drive down there and being to able to do my own thing.  Also gave me the chance to listen to a couple of new albums on the way down there.  When at Roots Hall I met up with a chap who I know through playing cricket.

I was considering going to Colchester on the SAS and would have booked my space on the coach however I wont be going now as I will be in Belgium for the weekend.

I always did enjoy the trips on the SAS, tip for the driver and watching "Face-Off" going down to Bournemouth are a couple of highlights.

I enjoy going to away games on me Colin.

My dad till recently used to live just outside Chester so I would visit him and take in a northern game too driving from there on my own, often meeting mates but not always as a lot of games were midweek so were attended to by only a handful of fans.

It alright but then I am a Billy at the best of times! I enjoy my own company and I can play my own music as loud as I want with no complaints!

Except for the first few years, football has always been a social thing for me - so I've not been on my own for years.  When I was a teenager, I used to enjoy the walk from home in West Swindon to the ground for evening games...but that's about the last time I can remember going on my own.

While the social side is important, the whole thing is about STFC for me so if none of my mates can make it then I'm more than happy to go on my own.

There was always 4 of us until a few years ago, then 3, now it's usually just me doing the 50-mile round trip for home games. Combination of being fed up with the state of the club/team, wanting to go to Prem games, kids, being priced out, doing other things (fishing, going to the races) - it's become apparent in recent years that I'm the only die-hard out of my lot.

It's not quite as enjoyable on my own but there's still nothing else I'd rather be doing. I'll also go to around 15 away games a season, though not this one because money's too tight to mention. Like others have said, I enjoy my own company and I can play my music as loud as I want, stop when/where I want, leave when I want, Talk Sport & 5 Live, I enjoy driving & spreading my wings after being stuck in the Mon-Fri routine.

From the age of 14 up until last season I had a season ticket and went to loads of away games (as well as Newcastle matches) on my own. I never used to mind it and liked meeting new people in the away ends. But I have not been to a home match this season as - although it sounds sad- I got very lonely and did not feel like travelling very far on my own without any company

It is completely strange as for years I had a season ticket and use to go to 75% of away games

Without trying to sound like a twat, this all depends on the relationship you have with the club.  Despite being a season ticket holder for fifteen years and a regular at away games, I was never one of what might be called "the lads".  I always went with my Dad for home games, and in my most regular spell of away games I went with him and a couple of mates.  I have also often gone to away games on my own.  What I think I'm saying is that my relationship with the club was never based on the "tribal" atmosphere, it was something more personal to me, my old man and a couple of close friends.  As a result, this probably makes it easier to go on my own - in fact, I've never felt comfortable on the odd occasion I've gone along to an away game in a big group.

Exactly the same for me. I tried the Town End tribal thing once or twice 20 years ago and hated it.

Getting pissed up before and after a game doesn't do it for me either. I'm actually looking forward to the Leeds game, on the coach on my own with a book and film or two to keep me busy while I eat my packed lunch. I'll probably have to sleep on the way home though as the rest of you fuckers making me stand at the game for 90 minutes will take it out of me.

I've never felt the need to get pissed while attending a sporting event. Possibly due to the fact that a group of us had to travel into Swindon for home games which meant that the driver couldn't drink anyway. Could never see the attraction of spending time trekking to and from the bogs and in some cases not being able to remember things clearly. Why pay for a ticket then miss parts of the game ?

I'm not averse to a pint before away games, and my attendance pattern was going with my Dad as a nipper, then with a bunch of mates from the same town (now down to one). Never got the 'tribal' thing either.

(I'm in my 'late forties' BTW, and I sit in the Arkell's, but you'll have deduced that, I'm sure)

I was in bits when we played away at Middlesbrough.  I'd forgotten my glasses (before I got contacts), so the far side was a blur anyway.  Met Digby, Cuervo and one other (maybe Watson) at half time and told them how we all hate McMahon and how whenever there is an argument between a player and McMahon we always side with the player.  Cuervo grabbed my hand shook it firmly, with a smile.  We also lost 6-0 that night.  Sometimes being pissed at matches works.

Used to go with a few mates (think they only went cos I kept nagging them!) to a few games about 20 years ago, but have been going by myself since then.

Used to go on the supporter's coaches, which were ok as long as you got a seat by yourself, and they actually got you there early for a few beers. Thing with the people on there was that they were all straight members so used to get in all the home pubs!

Been to Norwich, Brentford, Orient, Fulham away this season on the choo choo.

Hopefully Leeds will be a good (long) day out.

I went to Rovers last season alone, Ben Joyce and Corr started up-front, I'm not sure I ever worked out where Paynter was playing, they equalised in the last minute, I'd parked somewhere shit and it took me ages to get away, it was ace..

Not living in swindon I often end up traveling at least some of the way to/from games on my own. I'll be honest the hardest bit is having to say goodbye to eveyone at Paddington while I'll travel back home on my own for an hour. I'll admit to having a tear or two in my eye sometimes and it's worse if I'm pissed and we lose. Those that know me will be fimilar with my rather gay but heart felt txt messages as I travel home on my own. If we end up in the playoffs I'm staying the night in Swindon!!!!

At home usually it's just me and my bro or I go on my own but I enjoy seeing the lads I sit near. Away, sometimes I go on my own, sometimes with a mate or two and a couple of times a season, for the big games, I'll get the choochoo or funbus with a big group of mates and some folk off here.

Interesting a couple pages ago about it being a personal thing and going with your dad. Before my old man moved to China it was 99% of the time me him and my bro, and as we were all so busy in the week there was nothing better than getting up saturday and heading to boston or grimsby or somewhere and spending some quality time together, something I now miss big time.

That is a fucking good idea, If we do win the playoffs i'll make sure i book a hotel in swindon, as i've been to 3 wins and spent the evenings either in Newbury or up here, and was a bit flat tbh celebrating on my own.

Celebrating the play off win over Leicester outside the Vic in old town was a quality night. The journey down the M4 was pretty amazing too with all the town fans on the bridges with flags and banners. Its a good idea to come back to the town if when we make it that far.
