Title: Favourite/least favourite Grounds You have Been Too!
Post by: STFC_Gazza on Friday, March 5, 2010, 16:19:28
As it says on the label

FAVOURITE: Charlton Athletic, sound system great, still had some old school charm followed closely by Shrewsbury Town's gay meadow
LEAST FAVOURITE: Macclesfield, no roof, shit result, no pubs anywhere near by, loads of coppers because we were the “big club” in the division. Long boring drive. Hated it.

Favourite: Millwall - Don't know why but I really like it

Least Favourite: Hereford - Quite possibly the worst away stand in English football.

Good
Upton Park. Good pubs, good view.
Galpharm-Ditto
Craven Cottage. AA plus doddle to get to.
Stoke-Victoria ground. Dont know why as i was always plastered.
Carrow Road. Probably the best i've been to, good all round.
Brunton Park. Old school, good pubs.

Bad.
Southend. Crap stand, appalling facilities, no away fans pub, crap atmosphere, cold.
Brighton. As above but worse, except the pub bit.
Millwall, both old and new den. The new one is just a concrete horror.
Kenilworth road. Non league ground to go with their current status.
Feethams. Cold-wet, and more wet.
Fratton Park. Utter crap hole.
Brisbane road. Shocking facilities. One snack bar directly opposite the only toilet. Wooden seats.
Madjeski. Souless, plastic, shit.
Colchester new. Concrete, cold, crap underwater car park, nothing for miles.

Favourite - Craven Cottage for location/heritage. Although I also liked Accrington's ground a lot - a proper one that.

Least favourite - a toss up between the Withdean (not a football ground/stand miles away) and Swansea (soulless horrible concrete edifice).

Hmmm, tough one.

Fav is between Stanleys for, well, just being there ground, Villa Park from the big ones which seems to retain some old stylee charm, and Lftus Road which should be any medium or small clubs blueprint.

Least Fav, probably Ewood Park, where the away stand just seems like it's not even in the ground or Sincill Bank, which I've visted as a Swindon fan but also as a neutral and it was shit before development and shit after.

Favourite - went to the Emirates on Tuesday and it is an unbelievable stadium but in our Prem days I thought that Highbury was special, it had all those little touches that showed the history and even had Gunner motifs in the toilets.

Least favourite - Toss up between Twerton and the Abbey Stadium, the Manor wasn't too far off but when we got a result it was worth it.

You're joking right? I like the closeness of it all and the design is good in a way. But any ground where you can't see the pitch properly from the upper tier is automatically poor. The goal is literally underneath you so you can't see a thing.

Difficult question, but...

I actually liked the Manor Ground - gave the whole derby a certain flavour that I felt was missing in our game at the Kassam.  However, my favourite was probably Griffin Park.  It just had a proper football ground feel to me.  Each to their own.  I do also agree that Villa Park is the best place I've been that does "big club" with a good nod to history.

Worst:  You cannot get worse than the Withdean, but as that's not actually a football ground, I will say the JJB (now DW).  No atmosphere.  No fans, when we went there.  It was like being in a library with no roof.  "Wigan away" is still a phrase I dread to hear.

For me, it's all about the atmosphere created, not nice stadia, or comfy seats.

In recent years I've enjoyed visiting Brentford, Orient, Colchester (Layer Rd), Aldershot, Hereford and Torquay. All grounds we took a fair few to, where we created a great atmosphere and had a good craic.

Stadium mk is fucking horrible, as is brighton's ground (Although I enjoyed it last season!)

Withdean is indeed my least favourite, not sure if we should count it as its there temporary home, it was either withdean or fucking preistfield.

Falmer is starting come together and is looking like its going to be a pretty impressive ground.

I love kenilworth road and griffin park, old school shitholes.

Favourite - Carrow Road (nice stadium, station/Morrisons just round the corner) or Griffin Park (atmosphere, standing, 4 corners challenge)

Worst - Withdean (shit view, bad experiences)

For games not involving Town, Schalkes ground is the best I've ever been to I think.

Loftus Road is my favourite...real old style ground and the area lends itself to a good atmosphere(abit like Fulham)
Also Carrow Road is quality.
Villa for me is probably the best of the prem....old ground but great atmosphere.
The grounds i dislike are Hereford and Gillingham...the latter being a real real shitpit.

Best ground without a shadow of doubt Old Trafford....totally immense venue for watching football beats the Emirates into a cocked hat IMO.

Worst ground has to be Twerton Park when Rovers played there, even worse that the shit hole of Kettering.

I used to like the Victoria Ground too, one of my favourites definately. May 1990, the last game of the season before the play-offs, boiling day and we got a 1-1 draw, Shearer with a header from memory straight after they scored, we took loads that day.

No joke at all. I like small shit grounds with terraces. Feels like "proper" football as it's so far removed from the money merry go round of the Prem.

Fav - Portman Road, Oakwell both grounds walking distance from the Town Centres where grounds should be. I've always enjoyed my trips to Torquay as well. Aldershot is also a proper ground with the fans side by side.
Crap - Filbert Street - rough as fuck shitpit. Manor Ground but the Kassam is even worse. Any soulless plastic shitheap out of town - Derby's being a good example.

Ive never enjoyed going to Peterborough, just generally a dull crap place.

Enjoyed going to Adams Park a few times, beating them 3-2 a few years ago was quality.  Ball through the roof supports always good pre match entertainment

Dislike - Doncaster's new ground is a soulless box with no atmosphere.

Best... Highbury was fantastic when I went. Next to loads of good pubs and a great atmosphere. Also liked Loftus Road. Proper old fashioned ground in the middle of a city.

Maine Road was also a good ground but in a very rough area of Manchester! I passed one house with about 300 beer cans in the tiny front garden. The chap must have sat there in his chair, drank a beer and lobbed it out of the window!

Worse... Chesterfield was a fucking shithole. The gents were basically a gutter you pissed into and then it ran along the terrace. Manor Ground was a dump and Accrington was like sunday league standard.

Difficult one to answer. I quite like shitty old grounds, well mostly. And new grounds seem much a muchness. So I guess I'll answer taking into account lots of things like location, result, personal circumstances at the time. Etc. Etc.

Favourites:

- Brentford. Especially when we had the terracing. Piss easy to get to. Plenty of boozers. etc.
- Blackpool. Rocks. Weekend away
- Grimsby. But only because we only had to travel from York. The fish and chips were nice and they literally gave me a medal for going.
- Accrington. Purely because of the milk advert.

Least Favourite:

- Brighton (Withdean) shit hole.
- Kassam - only been the once.
- Oakwell. Mainly because Barnsley itelf is shit. There was too high a 'cash converters' concentration per square mile. And that was pre-recession.

My favourite grounds to go to are the non-league pre season.

Fulham and Brentford - easy to get to, decent pubs nearby, usually good following.

Stockport - always shit weather and shit drive when I've been there, and lots of dark satanic mills !
Withdean - might as well stay at my house in Swindon and try to watch from here. Surprised they don't issue gay opera glasses for away fans. Still not long now to put up with that dump (new ground or relegation for Brighton..don't care which)

My favorite was Highbury, an excellent atmosphere and felt really close to the pitch even though I was sat near the back.  Galpharm is also a really good stadium.

Least favorite's are Goodison park (real let down for a top division team) and Elland Rd which has seats big enough to fit a midget.

Am i going mental but wasnt wigans old grounds away just a grass bank?

Yeah it was.
I remember the Celery song there (in the play-off game when we came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2). Everyone was picking up handfulls of grass and throwing that in the air.

Oh, those were happy days.

As for my favourites, I did like Old Trafford & Highbury as away days, also Griffin Park was always a good day out.

Hate/Hated the Withdean & also Trumpton.  Colchester's new ground is also shit, middle of nowhere & a soulless concrete hell-hole.

But best of all has to be the old Wem-ber-lee, because we always won :D

Was that the night where the OB decided that a bit of tape was all that was needed to keep the two sets of fans apart.

Funnily enough it didn't do a very good job.

I just remember battering them for most of the 90 mins but being unable to score, and them scoring from a free kick which was given for handball after one of our players had been pushed over and had the ball kicked against him.

Still, it all worked out in the end :D

Some real good shouts there. Maine Road was the absolute real deal. Proper spectacle having that sort of ground shoehorned into that area. Quite intimidating as well.

Highbury was definately the most picturesque ground I ever went to. Easily the best thing about Arsenal!

Love the intimacy of Loftus Road, always creates a great atmosphere.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Vicarage Road yet - it seems that wherever you park, you have to walk about 3 miles around the allotments to get to the away end. Then when you are in there, you have home supporters in the tier above gobbing, throwing whatever down on to you. What a shit hole.

I still quite like Anfield as a ground, again its all about keeping the history, and Anfield has got the right sort of balance between old style real football ground and modern facilities. The old Wembley will always hold special memories obviously, and I think Boston deserves a mention as I remember at the time thinking this is how a football ground should be - ie a real shithole but with a certain old school charm.

And bending the rules slightly, another fantastic ground is Twickenham. Football clubs could learn a thing or two from the design of this ground. Spectacular when full, but even when half/third full you still get a decent atmosphere with plenty of beer & food stands all around the ground meaning no queues.

Of the biggish modern grounds, Molineux is my least favourite - you're miles from the pitch and the sound and atmosphere just evaporates. White Hart Lane and Villa Park have the right mix of old-school tradition, decent facilities & location and great atmosphere.

I was there too, got a bit slippy when we started getting back into the game, if I recall.

Nasty hateful ground was Springfield Park, would never be allowed now with elf and safety, that bank was terrible as soon as it started raining...which in Wigan was all the time!

A good night out, but not as good as the final at Palace against Gillingscum.
