Title: JP Set To Sign for 2 years, Smith, Morrison, Kennedy 1 Yr, Bill, Manks to decide
Post by: STFC_Gazza on Sunday, February 21, 2010, 12:39:22
May be in the match day thread but I cant be fucked to look.

Fitton was on the radio y-day and said that JP has agreed a 2 year contract, Morrison, Smith and Kennedy have agreed 1 year contract. Amankwaah and Paynter have until the end of next week to agree a deal or talks will be suspended until the end of the season.

Great about JP but means that perhaps Billy will want to test the market at the end of the season?

After the game yesterday Billy did say he was happy here. I guess he would though :)

Worried about Billy going in the summer tbh. Great news about JP though. If we can get Manks and Billy signed up again then i'll be happy.

I'm hoping the stallers believe we are going up and they can ask for more money in the summer!!

I'm not sure why anybody would want to leave at the moment. Hopefully Billy will sign soon. He's finally becoming very popular and looks great in this partnership with Austin. He's seen for himself that it doesn't work out at every club so hopefully he'll realise he's got a lot to lose should he move on.

I'm not that worried about losing anyone, just look at all the players Wilson has brought in over the last 12 months; Lucas, LJF, Sheehan, Greer, Cuthbert, Douglas, Ferry, Ward, Austin and Pericard - practically our entire 1st team. We'll most likely lose some players over the summer for various reasons but I'm 100% confident Wilson will replace them with players that are just as good or better.

My biggest concern is that we'd pay through the nose to keep someone at the club. We're still fucked financially and need to keep wages under control, pretty certain Fitton will ensure that we do which is good news - even if we have to lose some players.

The buzz around Sean Morrison has faded somewhat so it does his development no harm by staying. I imagine Callum Kennedy is just happy to be offered a deal - he's young, he's been injured but hasn't looked out of place. If Kennedy got released it could go either way - either a 1 year deal at a League Two team or fall into the semi-pro game.

Jon-Paul McGovern is 29, this is the longest stint he's had with a club as a professional and has found form - why risk a move if you can get what you want financially here?

I'd be surprised if Amankwaah didn't sign - I'm unsure about Paynter though. We shall see.

I'm worried that IF we don't go up then Sheehan and maybe Ferry won't sign for us permanently and we could lose players like Cuthbert, Douglas, Paynter etc who would be very hard to replace.

unless it's a significant step up in wages, contact length,or level of football, why would they want to leave?

Wilson pretty much said that Sheehan is keeping his options open in hope that the Championship will call.

Yes, That's why i said above that he won't sign permanently if we don't go up, Would be a blow not getting him, No disrespect to Lescinel but Sheehan is a much better player.

Sheehan can wait for the Championship but not getting in Leeds team and being loaned out to Oldham probably means there aren't too many championship clubs after him.

We are probably his best chance of getting into championship

I was over the moon when he came here, there was always a good chance he could work miracles and achieve something as he has at other clubs. Would be a massive loss if he went, though he seems happy here and it must be nice knowing he hasn't got to worry about the money side of things.

Anyone know how long Wilson's contract is for? Not that it means much anymore.

I hope Macklin gets a one year deal, he's got more potential than Kennedy. If Paynter doesn't sign, then we got this whole finding another striker problem this summer (again).

Paynter is in a purple patch, and was hit and miss scoring wise until austin turned up. If he does move on would be a mistake on his part, but i'm sure we'd get at least as good in. Same with Ferry, as good as he has been, doesn't score enough, and again we'd get better if we couldn't sign him.

It's hard to know what the effect of Paynter leaving would be - he works so well with Austin so we'd be looking at replacing a partnership rather than a player. Finding somebody to score 20+ goals isn't too difficult, but we'd need somebody who could create the chances for Austin as well as replacing Billy's goals which wouldn't be easy.

Deadline for Paynter is approaching. If he doesnt sign then he will have to play out of his skin until the end of the season. Wilson will have Pericard in the side the second his performances slip if he hasnt signed.

Very suprised Amankwaah hasnt signed. Wilson has been somewhat of a mentor for him. Hes only ever produced really good form under Danny Wilson (here and at City). I do think if Amankwaah doesnt sign then Wilson wont ask again in the summer.

All that Fitton has said is that after the end of this week, all contract talks will be put on hold
until the summer. He and Wilson want the players fully focussed on the job in hand.None of us
have any idea of the contract offers and whether they are fair and reasonable in our eyes.

If the likes of Amankwaah and Paynter feel that they want to move on,then so be it.That will
have been their choice and they'll have to live with their decisions.

But it also has to be said that players agents do get involved and try to create stories in the hope that fans will pressure the board.

One story about Paynter moving to Rovers in the Bristol media was very fishy indeed, almost certainly planted.

It should be done behind closed doors, with players making their own choices. But in reality that isnt the case, agents leak stories and plant rumours, other so if fans take a negative attitude to how negotiations are stalling with some players then so be it?

From my perspective both of these players have been revived by a top manager. They have failed badly at other points in their careers.

We are all clearly some what biased but I think both would be stupid to move on.

As Spencer has said, they have both had poor spells at other clubs. In his last season at Swansea Big Kev wasnt even given a squad number.

I hope they are either just ironing out some minor details right now or they both think they can get more money (...and probably rightfully so) off the back of a promotion.

Both players have been in top form, this season but going into contract talks able to say you've just helped get the club promoted must at least increase your stock a little.

i dont think so.a draw is a point gained, and if others trip up we'll be right up their arses.
we are due a defeat to be fair, and that when it happens wont effect us too much if we bounce back

Why are we "due a defeat"? That's the same thing as thinking "I am on an aeroplane and this one surely must crash". There is no logic, reasoning or substance behind it.

Incorrect. The law of averages will state that the chances of something going wrong for each individual game are exactly the same for every game, including all of those that have gone before.

Guess you are right. After the season he's having I guess his bargaining position is fairly strong. But it is only one season, I don't think the club should break the bank based on that.

That said, we don't know what the sticking points are (if any).
