Title: piracy
Post by: trogladite on Sunday, January 31, 2010, 18:56:54
The Chandlers who were abducted when pirates boarded their yacht late last year. Are begging the government to pay the Two Million pound ransom.

Two points here.

The British Government never pay ransoms.  This should never change, no matter what.

The Chandlers, should of had a contingency fund in case anything went wrong.  If you can afford a yacht and go swanning around the world, then you and your family can afford the ransom.

Harsh you may think?  If you leave these shores, you should be aware that you are at the whims of foreign powers.

Not at all.  Go were you like, when you like but don't expect the government to bail you out.  People going abroad must take some responsibility for their actions.  There is a lot of unpleasent people out there, as we will find out at the world Cup.

If you have your own yacht and you go sailing about the world in it, then you have a few million bob in the bank.

Trogladite, im thinking of taking a 2 week holiday with the gf to Egypt this year. The holiday will cost around £1200, add another £1000 for food/drink/activities etc. This is going to take some serious saving for a man with my daily outgoings and general life expenditure. Do you think that £650,000 will be enough as a contingency plan or should i scrap the idea completely and just go camping in the new forest?

Do you own the boat yourself, or are you just renting it?

France is nice and relativly safe.  You could, if you insist on visiting a third world country, get some kind of insurance against kidnap, or and acts of terrorism

My Mum and Dad went to Egypt a few years back a couple of months after the terrorist attacks on foreign tourist buses, this year they're going to Sri Lanka (still smouldering from civil war, just had heavily disputed presidential election, about to have likely to be equally controversial general election). They're like a cross between Gloria Hunniford and Kate Adie

Not harsh at all. They sailed their yacht in waters that they would have known in advance were swarming with pirates. You make choices in life and sometimes it turns out shit.

Bizarrely, no, they're not choosing these places on a "Ooh, they've had some aggro, it'll be cheap" and are paying pretty much what you'd pay to go to these places before they became trouble spots. I think it's just my Mum decides she wants to go somewhere and isn't going to let a little local colour like terrorism or civil war put her off. I wouldn't rate the pirates' chances with her either tbh although they'd need to start coming down to the level of pedalos to be targetting my Mum and Dad.

But your forgetting the amount of influence the US and EU have over policy in the UK now.  Also the problems with the number of immigrants moving in.  Britain lost it's sovereignty a long time ago.

Every time I visit Thailand something bad either happens there or in other parts of the world.  I was there during the military coup in 2006, during the tsunami in 2004 and in 2001 I was there during 9/11.  I return for one month this summer, so you should all be afraid!!!!

BK Red, are people still calling for the little fat princess (forget her name) to take over when daddy pops his clogs?

I spent quite a lot of time in BKK between 2000 and 2003, great city, very interesting place!

The royal family is revered like nothing I have ever really experienced before or since.

Gard to say what'll happen, but my guess is that the army will step in as they are the only ones with enough power.
