Title: Stuff that's cheap for a reason
Post by: Barry Scott on Thursday, January 21, 2010, 20:18:31
I hate spending money on something i can get cheaper. So i'll often by unbranded chinese tat if it does pretty much the same job as the branded item.

I've owned 2 ipod nano copies both of which were only £30, both of which lasted less than a year. Yesterday i took delivery of a fake ipod touch.

I was quite pleased with myself. 32GB, pretty much all videos supported, radio, recorder, photo support, text doc support... £32 inc postage. Bargain.

It's already broken and it's only 24 hours old.

That's now pretty much £100 just on ipod lookalike mp3 players and nothing to show for it. I could go on with my adventures in false economy, but i won't.

Anyone else bought rubbish to save money/avoid paying shed loads for something?

There's plenty of knock off tat in slough. Bought an indoor TV ariel for a tenner, took it hom there was nothing inside the actual area, it was just to poles on some plastic. Went to take it back and bloke was having none of it

Save a fortune on laundry bills. Give your dirty shirts to Oxfam. They
will wash and iron them and you can buy them back for fifty pence

Domestos is an ideal substitute for Blue Curaco, and far less pricey.
It gives any cocktail a bit of "oomph."

Make cheap but effective baby rattles by gluing a lollipop stick to an
empty matchbox, then filling it with ten woodlice

That can't have been too surprising though?!

Car tyres are one of my old favourites. I used to buy the cheapest and was often surprised that they lasted for no time at all.

I bought the complete boxset of all the seasons of 24 that was on Sky off Ebay for £17 from a chinese dealer. Half the fucking things don't play. That'll teach me for being a cheap bastard

I tried to talk my sister into doing that, but in the end she bought them from hmv. I bought Lost season 2 on eBay for £10 or so, that was fine, but my World Series of Poker 2005 had a couple of DVDs that didn't play, fortunately the final few did though. :)

is that because after 3 you decided that they're so shite that they may as well just sit in yer cupboard?

and the WORST priced thing you can buy is toilet paper.

Too expensve and you feel like you're wiping yer arse on a duvet and two cheap and it tears so easly you may as well be using your hand.

Being a sad middle class pup I refuse to buy anything that's not branded, food, clothes, booze, shoes, electronics... it goes on and on. As a heavy drinking, heavy gambling student which ruins my finances somewhat.

It annoys the fuck out of me when people buy stuff on the cheap then bleat about it... Budget airlines and airline/McDonalds food etc in particular. You get what you fucking pay for, if Ryanair can fly you somewhere hot and sunny for the cost of your average night out, so cunting what if you have to sit next to some gibbering idiot who stinks of piss for a couple of hours? Or you think your civil rights have been violated cos you have to pay a quid for a dump on the plane? Be-fucking-have. Splash your 3 grand down and fly business class then. Nah, thought not.

I hate to have budget toilet roll in our house. I think it makes the place seem rubbish when you go in the toiulet and there is really cheap toilet roll that is rubbish to wipe your ass on. Ideally it would be andrex quilted.  :D

I don't like scented toilet roll either. You blow your nose with it and it smells weird.

I'm undecided about mushy pea brands. I thought Harry Ramsden's were disappointing to be honest. Asda's were a bit weak. I haven't tried the Sainsbury's version.

All I know is mushy peas when you are drunk come from some hidden factory in the Midlands that produce cooked vegetables that you were not previously aware of.

I think most vodka is grain based.

I once left a cheap bottle of own brand vodka in the freezer for a few days by accident, some of it froze. On the plus side it made the vodka stronger. On the negative side I was battered before I even made it out.

I've done my last 3 fortnightly shops in Sainsburys and found myself saving £25 each time! I was always led to believe it was more expensive than Asda. But where in Asda i wont touch their smart price stuff, Sainsburys basic range is beter than some named brands!

Whilst typing this i just looked up to get an eyefull of vinnie jones package, he's not smart price!

I read this a few weeks ago. Freezing your wine will leave most of the alcohol (ethanol) nicely liquid and you can scoop off the ice and have a 30-40% proof belter.

Cheap short and no extra tax.

I totally disagree!! I love mushy peas and bachelors mushy peas are THE mushhy peas they taste lush but budget one's are just weak tasting green goo.

Honestly compare bachelors and smartprice (or newagents budget ones) mushy peas and there is a big diffreence.

The difference seems to be that you can actually see big chunky peas in bachelors and the difference in taste seems mostly due to the fact bachelors add more sugar or whatever.

Ahhh...Batchelor's - that was the brand that I was trying to remember. Yep, full of chunks and bloody tasty. That must be the secret factory that supplies the chippies.

They actually do 2 types. If you look in the shop they have tins of bachelors mush peas and tins of bachelors "chip shop" mushy peas...

I think they look different. Inside the lower version is a polystyrene insert with a plastic lid.

i like batchelors ones, but not those with a minty twang to them.
most cheapo brands are as shite as the brand name ones, as i find they are all watery and drab.sainsburys were not though.nice and thick and good taste.

Bought a 16GB memory stick from China for £15 inc p&p and today discovered that once it reaches about 5-6GB, it stops allowing the addition of further files, yet acts like it has. You copy and paste across and they appear to go, only when you plug it back in it has just copied the folders and left them empty. At that same point it loses the ability to delete files and you have to format it to be able to store on it again.

Bargain...

Note to self: Stop buying useless chinese tat.

XP and OSX. It's not particular file, just when total files goes above a certain size it stops storing them. I know there was a thing years ago where the chinese were flogging off storage devices that had somehow been fiddled with to look as though they held more than they actually did.

I know XP has problems with USB drives formated as FAT32 when files are >4GB.

Yeah, i discovered that long ago when trying to copy some massive files that windows didn't like, but no, it was just loads of pictures and videos and what not. I think it's just a lot smaller than my computer thinks it is.

I've read some horror stories about those dodgy usb flash drives, the best ones are when you just get an empty shell with no memory at all.
