Dad got a posting to RAF Lyneham in the early 1980s, and then ended up buying a house in the nearest big town.

Dear God no wouldn't dreaming of living anywhere near Swindon...  far too backward.  Lived in Hereford for a year and that was the same....

Lived in Chippenham as a boy before moving to the bright lights of the Saaaf East.  Now in Crawley, probably til I retire!

Crawley's lovely...  good links - Brighton/London half hour a way, Bluewater not much further, excellent shopping facilities, decent nightlife, tons of employment - before the recession enjoyed negative unemployment for a while...

But yes it's full of pikeys...maybe that's why I feel at home, being from Chippenscum?!

I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
and heaven knows I'm miserable now
stupid ex-job
though I'd rather be jobless than move towards the South-east again!

Oh and Ciren is my hometown, so we are quite close to my mum and sister which mean they can see the kids more (and babysit) than when we were in Basingstoke.

Born here, moved to Ashburton (a very little town in Devon between Exeter and Plymouth) in 1997 and moved back up here in 2004 to be nearer the family.

I could have ended up as a Reading fan as well.  (Shudder.)  Dad's side of the family have been Reading for generations while Mum's side come from north Hampshire, where we live now.  My Dad even tells a story where a cousin took him to see a game at Elm Park in the 1950s - and he thinks it was against Swindon - where he practically froze to death in the wind & rain on an open terrace.  He hated every second and never went back.

I'm just glad the sun wasn't shining that day.  Both brothers, a sister and I all now Town supporters, but it could have been so different.

than when we were in Basingstoke.

Anyone calling Swindon a shit hole has clearly never been to Basingstoke. I worked there in the late 90's commuting every day - the shit road that takes you there is a warning of what's to come. The town centre was shit and there was only one night club, the people I worked with said it was safest to take a knife with you if you went there.

Title: Re: Why did you move to Swindon?
Post by: Simon Pieman on Monday, January 11, 2010, 16:20:47
Most of the stories you hear about night clubs are bollocks anyway.

Brunel used to get slammed for being a problem hot spot, but the only trouble I ever witnessed was when that bloke and that bouncer fell down the stairs and everyone wasn't allowed to leave.

Anyone who says that about Basingstoke clearly hasn't been there since the late 90's!  They knocked most of the Town Centre down and put up a nice modern arcade (Festival place) with a cinema and eaty places at one end.  Oh, and a new club (RIP Martines)!

It ain't exactly bluewater, but it takes the piss out of Swindon it terms of lack of shabbyness. Annoying because if Basingstoke managed it so should have Swindon, and then some!

Still at Swindon is better than Slough! That should be on the 'city limits' signpost - "Swindon, better than Slough!".

i saw loads of trouble in brunel or outside.one time the bouncers took a right beating off a load of black guys.that is the only time i've seen bouncers on the receiving end.they took a right fucking hammering that night.
i got ejected for fighting in there when i was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and some bloke tried smashing a milk crate over my head outside.
another time i saw a bloke throw a toilet at the doors(i kid you not)

Ah yes Martines, used to be one of my haunts, along with the Brunel and  The Target In Reading, Brunel was easily the best of the 3.

I suspect you went in a different era to me. If I've guessed your age right, you'd have thought all that ecstacy would have stopped the fighting, no? :)

Last time I was there they were just about to start demolishing the town centre. To be fair the work they'd done up till then looked pretty good but I never got to see the finished article.

Born and bred here. My parents moved here in the 50's as part of the London overspill. It was Swindon or Basignstoke - I struck gold. From living in a slum flat in London, my dad was offerred a job as a labourer and one of the new houses in Park South - with garden. As a family, we owe Swindon a lot.

Similar to you Chalkie, my parents moved to Bracknell New Town in the 50's. It was an ace place when I was little - a one horse town. Just one new housing estate. Cricket pitch behind Woolies, loads of fields, original buildings etc. It was well fucked by the time I got into my teens. I suppose the same could be said of Swindon with the 70's/80's destruction of the old new town. I was glad to leave, it is a horrible, horrible town now.

Anyhow, it looks like I am the only person on the poll who moved here because of house prices. Interesting. What I do know that is I have lived here for 23 years and I love the place. When I say that there is nowhere else in the country that I would rather live, I really mean it.

An oasis in a sea of green.

I've become the 2nd person on the poll to move here because of house prices.  Grew up in Hungerford and after going back to my parents after uni, got a job at Vodafone HQ and decided to buy a place in a big town which was commutable to Newbury.  Looked at Reading, Southampton, Oxford, Bristol - but for my money I could get a bedsit in those places as opose to the 2 bed flat I eventually ended up buying in Swindon!

And it was 5 mins walk from the CG - double bonus!!  :D

Very good, but the truth is other than the football and (to a lesser degree) speedway teams I haven't got any links to the Town.

Will hopefully return to Wiltshire someday, but I doubt it will be to Swindon.

And for what it's worth, there's nowt posh about Peterborough ;)

I would willingly sell my house and all its contents to keep Phil Smith at the County Ground.
