Back to form and a 3 - 0 win today I reckon.  Picking up my Fulham ticket before the match as well.  Should be a good day.

I have a bad feeling about todays game too, I think they will sneak it 2-1 with Paynter scoring and a 7,765 crowd.

You'd hope we'd be organised enough to have done this, but we are talking STFC here.

This frost was forecast, and it's a bit concerning there's been nothing to say it is on yet. This might suggest the ref hasn't been summoned yet, so could fall to a late one. :(

I'm not fucking moaning....I'm just pointing out that there was a frost last night, and we know from experience this can cause us a problem. Therefore, you'd expect a statement of all clear.

I know I know! I had a quick look to see if it had a list of postponed games, as they normally do. Only one or two are off so far today.

When you've followed the Town as long as me, it's inevitable that one takes a somewhat jaundiced view of proceedings...the real pessimists just give up all together, and there are plenty of those, most often from the  fraternity.

Thing is every team is confident of beating us because some don't realise how good we have been this season. Some teams think we are where we are by fluke. I think we'll win today anyway. Hopefully Austin plays.

Are you serious?

We draw against 9 men and management appear to be happy with that.

Yeovil win 4 0 and have been beaten 3 times in there last 15 outings.

We are expecting a big crowd, just the sort of game were we go into our shell.

Sad to say, I see a defeat and it'll ruin my Christmas.

Every interview I've read with Wilson suggests that he was disappointed with the result on Saturday.

And no, he wasn't serious. Nobody ever seriously predicts a 4-0 win.

“We possibly have thrown two points away but we’ve also gained a great point,” Just a 1 line quote from DW. The use of the word possibly is highly dismissive of a huge fuck up.
As for the 4 0 prediction, why not insert a smiley and we can all enjoy the joke.

"We should have put the game beyond Charlton"
"We should have taken all three points"
"It's just disappointment from our part"
"Overall, two points have escaped us"

Think todays game will be more about fatigue as apposed to footballing skill.

If this was next saturday (ie the players had a weeks break) then i'd say we would win easily.

However we did play 45 minutes against 9 men on Saturday so hopefully the players energy reserves wern't diminished too much as a result.

Think it will be a close game, hoping Town snatch it 1-0

Well I finally saw us win against Brighton and very nearly saw another win at the Valley.

Today would be great to win but think it'll be a 1-1 draw which will be seen as poor although Yeovil are much higher in the table than I thought they were.

**SARCASM**

I remember the hatrick he could of scored against Walsall. 1 Missed an open goal from 5 yards,  2 hada soft penalty saved and scored a pen.  He is  our top scorer.  The top scorer in a low scoreing team.  It's the introduction of Austin that's got Paynter tickling along again.  Paynter is having a great season but it says a bibful about our teams scoreing prowess that Billy is top dog.

Stop talking utter bollocks an 11 goal return from Paynter before Christmas is excellent, if he does the same in the new year he gets 22 goals for the season.  20 goals a season is seen as a great return from strikers so your talking shit.  Its easy to mention the game Paynter missed sitters but hes easily been one of our most consistent performers for the past 2 years.

Title: Re: Swindon town v yeovil official matchday thread
Post by: reeves4england on Monday, December 28, 2009, 12:27:13
Paynter has scored 11 goals this season, and we're half way through. The way things are going, we could have two strikers pushing for 20 goals each come the end of the season. If it had been Mooney and Parkin people would have been saying it shows how good we are in attack

It's the introduction of Austin that's got Paynter tickling along again.

I thought Paynter was having a mare at the start of the season, then Austin came along and he's a far better player. Pretty much the same as last season alongside Cox. Not having a go at Paynter, just saying that he seems to play better with an out and out goal scorer playing with him - you can probably say the same about Austin and Cox having someone like Paynter.

Again disagree some of the shifts Billy put in at the start of the season in the lone striker role were some of the best individual performances I have seen this season.  I am not saying Jonny is in this category but there is a section of our fan base who have never accepted Billy, some of the abuse he has taken has been a joke.

The only time Paynter wasnt performing to a very high standard was between him playing as a lone striker and playing with Austin.

Hutchinson, Topi and Revell uptop with Paynter never worked.

I wasn't saying he played badly at the start of the season just that he plays better and scores more with the right player alongside him. Without Austin, Paynter has scored 7 in 19 games compared to 4 in 6 with Austin starting.

That was proper cold out there but well worth it. I cant really knock any of the team as we played very well. Yeovil looked quite threatening at the start of the game but we took control and always looked like we would win.

I saw my first Charlie Austin goal too, happy days.

Fully enjoyed that. Got to say we were a threat every time we went forward, and with a bit better finishing we could've scored 6 or 7 easily. They were defensively shite.

Their no.9 Williams is a cock and should've been sent off for a moaning whinger. From the first minute he was late challenging our back 4, and he elbowed Sheehan in the first 5 minutes which the oficials failed to spot. He got booked for dissent and 10 minues later should've gone also for dissent, but the ref gave him a final warning, and was promptly subbed.

Paynter ful eserved MoM, and Charlie...7 in 7. It's a pity he's cup tied for Saturday.

Thoroughly enjoyable game. In truth Yeovil were unlucky not to score in the first 15 minutes but some superb goal line clearances denied them.

But after that we too control. A pin point cross from JP lead to Paynter's headed goal, then a smart layoff from Ferry inside the box lead to Austin's smart finish. Yeovil's goal was a fluke, the cross went in.

But for a couple of well saved long shots Yeovil weren't in it and we cruised to a victory-and should have scored more.

I would like to say Ward must never play for Swindon again. The cheek of scoring in under a minute of the second half meant I missed the f**king goal thanks to being stuck in the slow serving food queue because my son wanted a drink!

Anyway an enjoyable, well deserved and straight forward 3 points.

First 20 mins worried me as Yeovil punted it forward and we struggled a bit to clear our lines.  As soon as we got it down on the ground, we played ok.  That was one hell of a ball from JP who was my MOTM although there were a few candidates today.  Greer had a bit of a shakey first half.

Second half I thought we were excellent, some great football and passing movement and really deserved to score more than 3.

Thought Ward looked very promising and put more effort in today than Hutchinson has for the duration of his time here.  Would like to see him and Paynter start v Fulham.

I felt O'Brien although not bad going forward, offers us nothing defensively and seemed scared to put in challenges, as if he was worried about getting injured and Ward when he came on got stuck in far more.

Paynter and Austin both had good games too.

Very pleased with today and really hoping we see more of those performances.

bit gutted for OB - he was really starting to look the part as well.

Ward did a very good job on the left despite that not being his natural position, very composed on the ball.

Thought we carried on our recent trend in games by starting very slowly and backing off the opposition. That allowed them to play a bit and they had a few chances to take the lead. Once we got going (much the same against Orient and Brighton) we looked far more dangerous and the most likely to win the game. The first goal came from a few neat passes and then some real quality from JPM with the cross. Good header by Billy who I thought was excellent today. the 2nd goal was poor defending from Yeovil but great play by Billy who somehow kept the ball in then went on to a run into the box before a neat passing move saw Austin get another goal. Yay!

Their goal was a total fluke. Bloke went to cross it and it went in ala Ronaldinho 2002. That was the only alarm. From then on plain sailing. Great finish from Ward. He looked 10 times better than Hutchinson. Yet another win. It's almost becoming too good to be true. 6 wins from the last 8 and flying. Let's get Saturday's party out of the way and then focus on having a real push for the top 6.

Poor first half in which we were very lucky to go 2 up, some good finishes though and it was nice to see us take our chances. Yeovil's goal was a total fluke but in all honesty if anybody deserved to be ahead at half time it was them.

Second half was a different story. 3-1 up after 13 seconds and we could have had more - Cuthbert and Paynter both wasted chances, and Ward looked dangerous.

It would be great if we can get Sheehan here on a longer deal, and Ward showed a lot of promise today. JPM also put a good shift in. 7 points from 9 is good going and we're looking quite strong. We need to keep plugging away though because the performances haven't been incredible. As long as we keep picking up the points I'm not too fussed though! :)

Good game.  Thoroughly enjoyed it.  Could have had 5 or 6.  Ward looked really dangerous and would be nice to keep him for the rest of the season.  We look a dangerous team.  Back in the top 6 as Dongs lost.

Liked their player going down injured in front of the TE having had the ball smash him in the bollocks.  Ironically he was called alcock.  Well it amused me anyway.

First time I've had a proper chance to see Ward (seen him come on before, but he's not really got into the game) and I was really impressed. Quite apart from the goal (which was superb), he was a real willing worker, not just on the wing but tracking back and defending as well. For a young lad who's on loan and who's "proper" position is striker, that shows a real willingness to play for the team.

So, 7 out of 9 over what looked like a tricky Christmas and back in the play-off spots going into the New Year. I'd have taken that if offered it back in Sept/Oct :)

Just got back. Thoroughly enjoyed the game. Said hello to Charlie's dad outside the Arkells stand. Was a bit concerned as their forwards looked pretty good in the first half, very pacey. Couldn't say much about the goals in the first half as I'm a bit blind and it was hard to see from the Town End. O'Brien looked pretty decent before he went off. Ward took his well. No one said hello either, miserable lot.

One chuckle I had was when the players were warming up before the game, I think it was Ward took a shot and it smacked some poor bloke in the Town End on the side of the head. His m8 saw it coming and ducked and he got it side on. Fair play to him he shrugged it off, but the best bit was he never dropped his pie, what a chap!

Today was my first match between the embarrassment at Cheltenham last season, and the transformation is unbelievable.  For the entire 90 minutes, an aura of calm seems to ooze through the team, with all of the players looking comfortable in possession, and the passing crisp and accurate.  Gone are the days of hoof and hope.

Steady if unspectacular would be the best way to sum up today's performance, as none of the team seem capable of real moments of magic, but instead go about their business in a quiet, productive way.  The middle of the park with Ferry and Douglas is sorted, and I doubt there is a better pairing in the division.  Lucas looked very solid, comfortable kicking the ball and made a couple of decent stops.  Yeovil's goal was bad luck on his behalf, and perhaps highlights his one failing - he's not very tall.  When he first came out onto the pitch, the goal looked massive behind him.

O'Brien and McGovern look productive, and it was a shame to see OB go off as he looked dangerous early on.  However, his replacement Ward was fantastic, and he worked extremely hard for the team, scored a fabulous goal and could have had a second.

The forwards are tremendous.  Paynter played as well as I've ever seen him play today, and looks like an ideal partner for Austin, who seems a real fox in the box.  I'm dubious as to how much he has to offer the team outside the 18 yard box, but while he keeps scoring I don't think anyone will begrudge him a starting berth.

To sum up, even when we under the cosh early on, and Yeovil arguably deserved to score first, we seemed to play productive, steady football and gave an impression of control.  I am not used to this with a Swindon side, even during the playoff season under King did we control games in such a manner and look comfortable in possession.  I think we could use a couple of transfer in the January window, and it would good to extend the deals of Sheehan and Ward, but overall things are looking very good.  For people who don't watch Town often, ignore some of the doom and gloom that's on here - we are a much better team than I have enjoyed watching before.

Lucas - 7 - good kicking, couple of decent stops, good handling, shame about the goal
Amankwaah - 6 - lost the ball a couple of times, saw no evidence of the form people raved about earlier in the season
Sheehan - 7.5 - good little player, strong passing, good defensively
Greer - 8 - collusus in the air, evidence of good passing but did give the ball away a couple of times
Cuthbert - 9 - excellent
McGovern - 8 - different player to the one I watched at Cheltenham, bright, worked very hard
O'Brien - 8 - went off after 30 minutes, much to the delight of their right back
Douglas - 9 - tremendous, gets his foot on the ball, calming influence on the team
Ferry - 8 - perhaps a bit too defensive to be a partner for Douglas, but very good, worked hard
Austin - 8 - good little worker, took his goal well
Paynter - 9.5 - Very dangerous, bullied the Yeovil defence, great header, unlucky not to get a second

Special mention should go to Ward, who came on for OB and was fantastic.  Scored a great goal, and worked his socks on.  Sign him up!!

I really enjoyed today. Both teams were out to win the game and we were lucky to go 2 up. The cross from JPM to Paynter was absolutely superb. I was his biggest critic last season but he has been bloody good this season and he seems to be enjoying his football. The second goal was also good - great play from Paynter and ferry and a very good finish from Austin who kept his head. The third goal, well, Ward certainly caned the ball. Ward, in fact, looks a good loan signing, willing and a bit old school, no fucking around just direct, solid and a team player - basically everything Hutchinson isn't. Austin and Paynter yet again chased everything. Ferry had a cracking second half and douglas was his usual self. Manky was out of sorts today and i thuoght Sheehan put in a bit of a JFL perfortmance - good and crap in equal measure. Greer looks as thuogh he could do with a game or two off and Cuthbert was my MOM - won every header and swept up so much.
Basically, I thuogh both defences looked shit but we had Cuthbert and better strikers.
Roll on Saturday. Being a glory hunter it will be my first away game this season and I'm looking forward to it.

It'll be my first away game for about 20 years! I don't think of myself as a glory hunter though having barely missed a home game for the last 4 seasons (and there was some tripe to sit through for a lot of that).

It was good to see an extra 1,000 or so there today. people are starting to take notice again - near the play-offs for a fair while, a bit of a cup run and a strike partnership that has notched up something like 13 goals in 7 games.

STFC are finally offering something to make the not quite hardcore football fan consider popping down to see a game. The more the merrier, I say.

Pin point cross from Mcgovern put away with precision for the first goal.
The second was a bit scrappy but shows the benefit of having a striker who doesn't pause to think before hitting the ball goalwards.

3 points i wish to raise.

1/ The drum, as ever, is something that should be banned from games, much like guns.

2/ OB has improved massively and deserves some praise. He was ace at Charlton and ace today until he Barry Corr'd.

3/ Ferry appears to be getting forward more and is becoming more instrumental in attacks. I'd donate myself to medical research to sign him, as he'll clearly become the Steven Gerrard of League 1/CCC - albeit with less goals.

Another great all round team performance today, our league position doesn't lie - we're playing like a playoff team at the moment and have been for a while.

I know people were singing praises for O'Brien after the Charlton game but he still looks a bit crap to me. There were bits where he did look good and has more potential, so its a pity if he's going to be out again with injury.

Sheehan did well again, not convinced he's that much better than JFL. I was really impressed by the way Amankwaah and JPM played together today (and most days), especially the way they attack, overlap and cover each other. If only we can get a similar pairing on the left hand side.

Ward did a good job when he came on, bit too early to say whether he is good enough or not but I reckon we'll find out soon as Wilson gave the impression he can play in the FA Cup next week. Be surprised if he doesn't start up front, given the choice between him and Hutchinson. But that isn't saying much, I'd play a dog turd over Hutchinson. Bolton letting him play in the FA Cup suggests a good chance he's ours for the season if we want him (same for Sheehan).

The big contrast to the Brighton game was the last 15 minutes. We didn't look like we were going to concede at the end today, whilst the other day I was just waiting for it to happen. How can they fall apart one day, then hold it together the next?

Nope, you're right. And i'm happy to say i'm starting to love the new League Show, especially knowing the days of The Jed Pitman Borefest are long gone.

To be fair, they've been pretty complimentary about us for a while now, since we turned things round after the opening day. They can't stop talking about Austin either, he gets a mention pretty much every week.

Still not 100% convinced by the show, they seem to be doing it on a tight budget and it shows. Its a pity they can't find an earlier slot for it though I guess that would be pretty difficult as they have to show it after Match of the Day. I know you can watch it in 101 different ways, but its not the same as a decent slot.

Another great three points today.
Just think where Town would be this season if the games only lasted 89 minutes.

I'm a Celtic fan from Glasgow, and new to the board, but I've been following the Town results and reports all season to see how two of my favourite players - Simon Ferry and Scott Cuthbert - have been getting on.
It seems they're doing great, as are the Town.    :)

I first watched this pair playing for Celtic Youths when they were only 18.
I immediately saw that Cuthbert was a Billy McNeill type, while Ferry reminded me of Billy Bremner (ask yer dads!   ;) ).
They propelled Scotland to the European Under-19 championships final, in which they lost narrowly to Spain.
Then both struggled badly with injury. Especially Simon.

Scott did a lot to keep St Mirren in the Scottish Premier League last year. He's an out-and-out defender who knows he's not Beckenbauer. But, honestly, he'd do a great job in the Celtic first team just now.
You guys got a steal there. He'll be playing for Scotland before long.

As for Ferry, he's just perpetual motion and a total footballer with a great attitude.
And don't worry about his goalscoring. He doesn't score many . . . but he WILL score goals when you most need them. Trust me.

Now I'm really looking forward to seeing how you get on against Fulham. If they rest some players, you could do them.
I really hope to see Swindon making, and winning, the play-offs. And I'd love to get down to see you guys play.
Until then, I'll keep an eye on your scores, and keep tuning into The Town End for the banter.
Good luck, lads!

PS, At least I now know why Hutchison didn't get a start at Celtic. Sorry about that.
PPS, If you're struggling at left back, try for Darren O'Dea (a Celt on loan at Reading, Ireland Under-21 player who can play left back or cover for your centre-backs - he was Cuthbert's regular partner in Celtic Reserves) or Brian Easton, Scotland Under-21 left back who went from Hamilton to Burnley but hasn't started a league game yet.

Someone from Glasgow who seems pleasant! A first!! ;)

Welcome to the board John. From my experience in Scotland Celtic fans are mainly very knoweledgable so I will take your word for it about the players you mentioned. O'Dea was in the Celtic first team for a bit last year from memory, always thought he was quite a handy player.

The drum, as ever, is something that should be banned from games, much like guns.

Drums should be allowed in on the proviso that guns are also allowed in. I think it'd limit the amount of drummers surviving games.

our second goal was never a freekick to them, but our first did look a good yard offside. that lino and the ref were mentals

all in all a decent performance after a shakey start

We're a much better team with the ball on the floor, we don't seem to be able to win second balls when they are kicked high in the air.

Thanks for the post JohnBhoy. Very happy with Cuthbert, who has probably been our most consistent/best defender to date and Ferry.

Does Hutchinson have a reputation for being a lazy so and so north of the border? Real shame he didn't work out for us but he just doesn't seem interested.

Good win yesterday, we had three chances in the first half and took two with superb finishes. Thought Yeovil were very useful in the first half and a 2-1 lead flattered us.

Couldn't ask for a better start to the second though, Ward hammered that ball a fantastic finish and shows why he is signed by a Premiership side in the second half I thought he was outstanding.

I was really worried we wouldn't have enough firepower for Fulham but with Ward available no worries, sign him for the rest of the season DannyBoy.

We created so many chances in the second half it could easily have been 6 or 7 and after 46 minutes that fucking drum stopped, says it all really.

Sheehan's corners - how many poor corners came over what a waste.
Greer is obviously playing with an injury and needs resting - bring back Morrison for January.
Cuthbert is one of coolest defenders I have seen at this level, pure class and he could easily have scored two as well (got in the way of Billy Paynter when he hit it wide in the second half otherwise Bill would have hammered it in).

Only real disappoint was the atmosphere from Swindon fans, it was non-existent in the first half, did improve in the second, but 8,000 Swndon fans should make more noise than that.

Really looking forward to next weekend.

Great stuff Swindon.

That's not even vaguely miserabilist. Very poor effort.

50/50 Draw - because the tanoy was so bad didn't hear the result yesterday, saw a guy come round holding a board up at half-time, but from row X in the DRS couldn't read the numbers, I believe I have the winning ticket from what someone else said near me, when I asked him if he was sure he said 'no', bugger. Can't find any details on the official site - any ideas apart from phoning the club or did you hear the result. Thanks.

Really enjoyed the game yesterday. As someone said before, it was a shame Yeovil were pumping the ball in the air so much because on the ground we absolutely battered them.

Ward and Sheehan are exactly the sort of loan signings you want to see. Sheehan has played in 3 positions, and looked good in every one, shown great tenacity and commitment. First glimpses of Ward also very positive, he wasnt bothered about being played out of position and got stuck in, he won a couple of tackles he really shouldnt have, which the crowd loved. Most importantly when he got sight of goal he struck a fantastic shot. Revell and Hutchinson are not strikers, theyve got no instinct and hold up the play. Austin is scoring for fun because he hits the ball the second he gets a glimpse at goal.

To be fair to Yeovil they have a lot better team than they did last season. They played the ball about nicely in the first 20 minutes, but we were too strong. But weve done the double over them, the attendance at the CG was nearly double that at Hush Park and most important weve given them a football lesson. That feels good, too many years weve been shown up by the likes of Cheltenham and Yeovil.

I cant wait to see the full backs and wingers really start to work together. With Sheehan, Amankwaah, O'Brien and JPM weve got 4 players there who are putting in great work rate, and they can all attack. If those 4 start doubling up on defenses I think we can start ripping teams apart, and weve still got Macklin to come back, and Ward has shown he can mix it in that position. Weve got strikers who look determined to score goals. If we can keep things tight at the back we are looking very good indeed.

Also glad to be rid of McNamee. As I said, weve got 4 wide players who look hungry and work hard, and are really gelling with their team mates. With McNamee it was always the ' Macca show' if he didnt have the ball he wasnt interested and he didnt want full backs overlapping him, because there was no way he wanted to be the one tracking back.

Was he played out of position? From what I can tell he's a midfielder / striker. Couldn't figure out which foot he prefers from yesterday though, he seemed pretty good with both.

I did mean Ward, he's certainly got something about him. Billy seems to do his best work with a partner, so why not give the kid a go. The "Any reason why he can't" was really to do with Bolton not wanting him cup tied for any reason

I'm not too bothered which formation Wilson chooses against Fulham... We've done well lately with 4-4-2 and look to have finally found a fairly consistent line-up. Then again, that has largely been based on Billy and Charlie as the pairing up front, and our midfield worked well in the 4-5-1 formation earlier this year. As has been mentioned, the biggest thing would be to make sure Billy had support and wasn't left chasing everything on his own.

If we play Ward upfront then we need someone to play on the left.

If I had to guess I think Wilson might go

Lucas

Amankwaah
Cuthbert
Greer
Sheehan

Macklin
JPM
Douglas
Ferry
Ward

Paynter

4-5-1 to start with but with two very attacking wide men, can easily switch that to 4-4-2 if you wanted to

Althought Wilsons probably more likely to go JPM, Ferry, Douglas, Timlin, Ward as the 5.

I dont think Macklin will get any starts this season....he is to lightweight and hasnt muscled out yet....hes done very well but i dont think hes quite ready for the physicle side for a few months yet...his pace makes him vulnerable to injury and he was ideal to take Obriens place on Saturday but wasnt risked.

I think anyone who saw Macklin at McDons in the Cup would say that he is ready.

The injury is a massive blow though. Its a big worry for his future that he picked it up so easily, and unfortunately it has slashed the value of the player.

But I think given a chance he will take it with both hands. Wilson must be worried about the injury, which is why he hasnt come on yet?
