Title: Old man birthday present help Post by: Chubbs on Monday, November 2, 2009, 13:25:17 What would you get a 60 something year dad, who doesnt really have any hobbies as such for their birthday. Normaly i'd just buy him a bottle of whiskey but i stumbled accross the bottles i got him for the last 3 consecutive years that he hasnt got round to drinking yet.
Im not flush, so something reasonably priced. He doesnt watch TV, listen to music play golf or anything like that, the boring old fucker. :-) He does like to do crosswords mind, thats about it. Any suggestions? Title: Re: Old man birthday present help Post by: herthab on Monday, November 2, 2009, 13:28:35 Get him one of those electronic crossword thingies that help with anagrams and stuff. You can get them for about 20 quid at WH Smiths I think.

Title: Re: Old man birthday present help Post by: Dazzza on Monday, November 2, 2009, 13:33:34 Has he got a decent whiskey tumbler/glass?
You can pick up a nice piece of glass and get it engraved for a few quid, which makes it a nice memorable piece that won’t blow the bank. Title: Re: Old man birthday present help Post by: Phil_S on Monday, November 2, 2009, 14:10:08 Why not take him out somewhere for the day, or for a meal ?
Title: Re: Old man birthday present help Post by: Jamiesfuturewife on Monday, November 2, 2009, 14:10:45 lapdancing? Thats what my dad would like! and my dads a wincey bit older
Title: Re: Old man birthday present help Post by: Chubbs on Monday, November 2, 2009, 14:13:26 Why not take him out somewhere for the day, or for a meal ? taking him out for a meal would mean taking the whole family out for a meal, fuck that, cant exactly go out for a meal with the family and say "yeah, i'll pay for dads" and then my dad would probably end up paying for the rest anyway. i like the tumbler/glass idea, is there anywhere online that doesn them? oh and JFW believe me, he would love one of them, my dads a perv :-p Title: Re: Old man birthday present help Post by: Sippo on Monday, November 2, 2009, 14:55:36 Shoot me down now, but boots have loads of those 3 for 2 offers on especially xmas stuff. Might be worth a look?
Title: Re: Old man birthday present help Post by: jonny72 on Monday, November 2, 2009, 16:09:22 Does he drink a lot of tea / coffee?
If so, get him one of those kettles that boils a single cup of water at a time. I got my Mum one for her birthday and they love it, best present I've come up with for a while. You've got the fascination angle as to how it boils a single cup so quickly, but best of all it saves money - which always goes down a treat with parents. Mine cost about £40 (I think) from Argos. Title: Re: Old man birthday present help Post by: pauld on Monday, November 2, 2009, 16:12:25 If he's not bothered with the last three bottles of Scotch you've bought him, maybe he's not actually that keen on it, so isn't an engraved glass likely to gather dust as well?
Title: Re: Old man birthday present help Post by: BANGKOK RED on Monday, November 2, 2009, 16:22:53 I am still going with the socks, I'd be dead chuffed with socks at 60.
Title: Re: Old man birthday present help Post by: Rustle on Monday, November 2, 2009, 17:11:26 Does he drive at all ? something for the car usually goes down well or a decent torch always comes in handy especially this time of year.
Title: Re: Old man birthday present help Post by: Doore on Monday, November 2, 2009, 17:14:05 Does he have a digital camera? If yes, a digital photoframe. This went down very well with my old man who is just a couple of years younger.

When you become an old fart time with the family is really nice, book an apartment/cottage in Cornwall with the family, go to the local pubs, eat pasties, go down old memory lane etc. Title: Re: Old man birthday present help Post by: Chubbs on Monday, November 2, 2009, 19:01:33 cheers guys, in regards to pauld comment, he likes/drinks whiskey, but the ones i buy him arent your run of the mill tesco jobbies, last one cost me 55 quid, i think he's actually scared to open it.
some good ideas there, like the kettle idea, but thats gonne have to go through my mum as to if it fits in the kitchen? he's allways a hard one to buy for, hes a minimalists, he doesnt want/need things that are unnesseccary (its the jew in him) its the same every year. "dad, what do you want for your birthday" "nothing" of thanks, great help there. I might get my sis in on it and do one of those red letter days. Ah, that makes sense. I do that too - "Oooh, that's too good to drink now, I'll save it for special" then get in one night wankered and scarf half the bottle, which really is a waste. There was a place on the net doing novelty customised pub signs which we looked at for my Dad a few years' back. Seriously cheesy but my Dad would have loved it. We didn't go with it in the end because there's no way my Mum would have let him hang it anywhere. Failing that, surely Reg as the resident old man of these parts should be able to suggest something suitable to the more senior inclined? I do that bottle thing, well keep them for a special occasion, then when said occasion comes just go to the pub, get ratted and not want waste it when I get home. I'm not sure how well these things last, but I've got a nice bottle of brandy, and one of champers. It's just possible that when Chubb's old man says he doesn't want anything he means it. Failing that the lap dancing should go down well...as long as the glasses don't steam up. Title: Re: Old man birthday present help Post by: pauld on Monday, November 2, 2009, 19:55:58 What about a lapdancer wearing socks, and as the final part of the act she pulls the socks off and gives them to him as a keepsake? Best of all worlds then.
Title: Re: Old man birthday present help Post by: Chubbs on Monday, November 2, 2009, 20:05:36 reg when he says that, he does mean it, but theres no way i can get him nothing for his birthday, though sometimes im tempted

He'll enjoy that. Title: Re: Old man birthday present help Post by: Langers on Monday, November 2, 2009, 20:35:15 I find personalised gifts go down well, like a mug or picture frame with 'best dad' or whatever on it or the other day i saw a website which sells personalised football books (if your dad likes football - they even do Swindon) where it has newspaper articles from over the years and you can perosnalise with his name etc
I thought it was quite good and will probalbly invest in one fro my dad. http://www.gonedigging.co.uk/sports-book-gifts/personalised-football-books/football-club-books/swindon-football-book/#anchorTarget Title: Re: Old man birthday present help Post by: Simon Pieman on Monday, November 2, 2009, 20:44:28 Wrap up a care home brochure and see how he takes it.
