Title: The Abbey Stadium
Post by: STFC4LIFE on Tuesday, October 27, 2009, 21:04:20
How far away is it form Swindon town centre? I'm looking to go to the races on the 5th December for my birthday if there are any on, then thinking on going into Swindon after.
Is there a bus running or will taxis be cheap?
Cheers.

No chance, it costs me £8 to Shaw from town. Minimum £10, more likely £12.

really? I live in shaw and pay less than that. Just thinking you can short cut via penhill/Stratton from the abbey to town centre

15 minutes from there to town centre in a car. A few quid each if you get a cab.

Admittedly I only get cabs late night at the weekend but they're always between £7 and £9, dependent on the actual trip, black cab vs hire car and how much the driver tries to take the piss. From town, the Abbey Stadium is a third further than Shaw so its going to be a few quid more.

It's not that much further than Shaw, half a mile maybe. Unless you go down the A419.

Just ask the cabbie to go down Cricklade Road if he asks. He/She should go that way anyway.

I live about a mile from the stadium and taxis into town from here generally cost around £12-13ish.

Between £8 and £9 with united from abbey stadium to commercial road,if they try to charge you anymore ask to speak to management.

Its just under a mile further than my house, I checked on Google Maps - 3.2 vs 4.1.

I live opposite asda wallmart, and pay no more than £7 for a taxi to town.

You can't live far from me then Sippo!

Thinking back - the last few times I've got a taxi into town we've had a 7 seater which might knock the price up a bit - hence £12-13 being a bit higher than it would usually be (I'm assuming the bigger taxis charge higher fares?).

Some people make me laugh,I expect you would be the first to mouth off if someone tried over charging you,or maybe you're just stupid enough to let them do it and say nothing.

Bollocks to that. Me and my mates have had plenty of rows with drivers that were trying to rip us off either by driving the long way round or just making the fare up. Not long ago, dropped a mate off at his house and the fare so far was £8, by the time we got to my house about half a mile away he wanted £14 - no way that was going to happen.

It's uphill to the Abbey Stadium.

I'd watch out you don't get taken to the one in Cambridge. That would cost nearly as much as the one STFC Dave got from Bristhole to Bath.

Yes, bloody complain. The same driver will only rip you off again, or your wife, kids, parents or friends. If a barman charged you £4 for a pint which, the previous night, only cost you £2-50 I'm sure you would complain then. If you feel you are being ripped off by a taxi driver then ask to see his 'badge' which he is obliged to show you. Other than that, ask for a receipt, which he is legally obliged to provide you with, if requested. Also take the details of the taxi plate on the car. Make a complaint to the taxi firm, and, if need be, to the local taxi licensing authority. Unless, of course you are happy being ripped off.

If it's only 3 or 4 miles can't you walk it?

I always ask what the fare will be,if they refuse or mess about i go to get out and get someone else....guarantee they will give you an amount it will be...get the price before you go...not after.

He could contact the taxi firm beforehand and ask for an estimate. Also, some drivers have a scale of charges based on mileage. My guess is that a journey of 4 miles would be £8-50 tops.

If you're really that bothered ring up V Cars and when you book ask how much it will cost.

Talking of taxi charges, I once left a girls house in the early hours and realising I had no money thought it would be an excellent idea to visit the cash machine at Tesco and phone a cab from there (I wasn't too keen walking down Manchester Road on my own and I had no money except for pocket change). Unfortunately I couldn't get through to any of the cab companies, but as luck would have it I could see quite a few black cabs driving past. My efforts to flag one down weren't successful until one cabbie took pity on me.

I arrived at the road where I live without incident and the cabbie handed me a slip of paper saying if I'm ever stuck for a cab then call this 'special number'. I'm not too keen on this idea but thanked him anyway and asked how much I owed him. He then said I'd already paid him and to be sure I phoned him direct the next time I needed a taxi. Maybe I didn't realise how drunk I was? Hmmm.

I got the hell out of there quick and walked in the opposite direction to my house until he drove off. Checked my wallet and there were the same two £10 notes I had from where I withdrew the money from Tesco. Luckily I'd gotten away without paying any taxi fare and seemingly avoiding being raped. Weird.

I think I might have told that story before, but nonetheless it livens up the thread.

I think we should turn this into a taxi related anecdotes thread.

Good story Dave. How much did Ralphy end up paying for the taxi from the airport, anyone know?

I once had a journey in a taxi equiped with an xbox (the old one, this was a few years back). My mates and I tried playing some Wipeout-a-like game but it was all a bit too nauseous going round a corner one way in the game and another in reality. Luckily I stopped playing before I got too ill.

I have remembered another taxi related anecdote, another strange cabbie who called himself double-o-Mo.

I'll wait until some other people have told us their taxi tales of joy or woe first though.

i've been picked up by a trannie a few years ago.
i got in the cab and said "alright mate"
then after a few seconds i sunk in my seat as i noted the clothing and hair etc was like a middle aged womans.
i sat in silence for the rest of the journey.

i also hate it when i'm trollied and the driver wants to chat.cant they see i'm off my face?

I don't think i've got any other outlandish storys. There was one where i had to direct the driver all the way from my house to old town. And he ran a red light, stopped, and reversed back to the stop line. That was a bit odd

An old work mate of mine got nicked for legging it from a taxi without paying. The best thing is his dad's a taxi driver and wasn't best pleased :D

Unless I put them on the wrong way round when I left the house then they were the correct way round.

When I was working in Sussex my company paid for rooms in a 'nearby' Premier Inn for me and someone from another office of my firm. Unfortunately this nearby Premier Inn was 20 miles away and neither of us had a car.

So we got taxis to and from the place we were working and from day one it was the same cabbie, a bloke who was called Mo, who had some rather interesting stories. The bloke was either a nutter, on something or both, he constantly laughed at the most trivial of things. I think at one point he asked if we liked strawaberry milkshake, pointed to a field of cows and said 'I bet you like fucking the cows too eh?'. I have to hand it to Mo, he was a comedy genius.

He actually called himself Double-O-Mo, the reasons for which became apparent later in the week when he told us one of his many fanciful stories. The story goes that Double-O-Mo was actually pretty handy at kickboxing and his old mentor was getting beaten up by a dozen or so gypsies. Mo stepped in and fought them off one by one just like a scene from a film. Thereafter he was called Double-O-Mo.

The outlandish stories continued but really they were harmless. On the second to last day he picked us up in a minibus because he was going to drive his mates down to Brighton. Halfway through the journey Double-O told us he was picking a mate up. Sure enough, out on a B-Road, seemingly in the middle of nowhere a bloke is waiting on the side of the road and Double-O-Mo pulled over and picked him up. Once in we were introduced to his mate. I would be lying if the strange circumstances didn't make me nervous but we got dropped back to the hotel fine.

true story, once got a taxi in mexico city which is notorious for robbing and kidnapping, i was with my mexican mate and we were both very drunk. cab driver went the wrong way and was obvious we were in deep trouble.....

my mate pulled a fucking huge knife out and held it to the drivers throat screaming at him to stop the cab, driver pulled over and we fucking legged it. afterwards i asked my mate about the knife as i found the fact he had it a tad disturbing, his reply "if youre getting in a cab always make sure you have a weapon, its normal"
