Title: On the road
Post by: JanTheMan on Sunday, October 4, 2009, 22:05:41
Just out of interest does anyone know how many we had at the last three away games.  I was at Walsall and reckon 600-700, and Exeter 500-600.  Missed Brentford.  I know they print the away following in the programme, but can't find the info anywhere on the net.

1,244 yesterday apparently. Exeter was 600 odd.

There were 735 at Walsall and 609 at Exeter. Add those figures together, deduct 100 (the minimum investment in £ required to remain as a shareholder) and the resultant figure will tell you how many we took to Brentford. Simple maffs innit ?

It's been the same for a couple of years though. Our away following during our stint in League 2 was actually more impressive.

Hmmmm not sure really. Tbh we were never going to take any more than 1,200 were we? The only days I can see us getting close to 2,000 on are the later games in the season (if we are still up there) and Southampton and possibly Charlton.

The Gas took about 3k to Saints on a Tuesday night, surely we could match that on a Saturday?

I doubt it. Tbh i'd say the Gas are probably better supported than us on the road. It pains me to say it but it's true. Their support is normally up with healthy figures even for the Northern games. Plus it doesn't surprise me they took 3k to Southampton. They're 4th and of course most probably went to see Lambert. We'd struggle to take 3k anywhere in L1 unless it was a promotion game or big local derby with high stakes.

I reckon I could be forced in to sitting with the home fans - my dad and brother are Southampton supporters and we're all in their membership database as we used to go down there a few times a season. Mind you, it will be worth it as my brothers still 100% Southampton and watching him sit through the pain of the home game was great fun - especially him having to admit they were lucky not to go down 3-0.

Bristol Rovers took 1600 to Brentford, quite a few more than us. Their away support has always been good though.

As long as we're still playing well I'm sure we'll take at least 2500 to Southampton

Yes but rovers have made there best start in fuck knows how long, now the bubble has burst I bet by december when they are back in mid table there following will drop off.

If we are still in the top six when we play southampton we will take 3000.

If we are in the top 6 we will take 3000 to Leeds....are home crowds are showing that people are still not convinced...the next two matches are massive for the club in sense of crowd improvement...two wins would really put us close to the top and thats the only thing that will bring the missing thousands back..we are only 9 points behind top spot..the next two matches will be so important....Saturday reminded me of times past,if we could continue as we are it might remind a few stayaways of the past as well.

Why not? We should be taking at least 2,000 to West London.

Just playing devil's advocate here, but we were without a win in four games, and people might have been put off by not being able to buy tickets in the days leading up to the game. And tickets weren't exactly cheap for the view you get.

That's an arbitrary assumption - 1 in three of our (roughly) average home gate would make an away trip to a small club for an October fixture?. I'd say 1200 was about right. Now, had it been at the end of the season for a promotion/playoff/relegation 6 pointer, I'd probably agree with you. Not sure I'd have like to be in with another 800 fans though.

Being able to take a third of our home gate away is what distinguishes us from other clubs.

It was a below par following (numbers wise).

I remember an away leg in the League Cup against Layton Orient around 1999 when the attendance was exactly 4000. Always stuck in my head that.

In th 95/96 season, only 2 seasons off the Prem and a team looking good for the title, we sold out the lower and upper tiers, plus we also sold out about 1 block of the home stand.  Not sure what that is in numbers but I guess it would be our limit to what we should be expecting (and being 7th/8th this season we should have taken less than that).
