Title: HD TV's
Post by: Chubbs on Saturday, September 26, 2009, 09:23:40
I'll be the first to admin i know nothing about TV's these days, its come the time where my lodger is moving out and we were using his massive 52" TV as opposed to my 23''. I dont think i will be able to go back to such a small TV so im gonna get a larger one, dont need anything as big as 52'' but looking atleast 32'' plus.
I dont want to spend too much maybe no more than 400-500 (or is that wishfull thinking?)
So ye, if people could point me in the right direction that would be great.

Panasonic or Sony. That is all.

If you will be mostly watching standard definition such as Freeview etc then don't bother with a Full HD set. A HD ready set will do the job perfectly.

AVForums.com is a great site with loads of usefull info.

Samsung are a good brand in that price bracket.

You can easily get hold of an LG or Samsung 42" full HD for under £500 these days.

If size is everything this looks reasonable at slightly over budget:

http://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/304414/

But it isn't full HD, and so it would depend on what you use it for and how close you sit to the TV.

it's reckoned @ 50" I reckon you'd probably notice it's not full HD if you sit reasonably close (10ft or less). Assuming you watch HD stuff or play 1080 games

They reckon this:

http://www.burnyourbonus.info/hdtv-faq/faq3.html

So if you are sitting more that 10 feet away you'd probably not notice (assuming 20-20 vision)!

Samsung LCDs are also good.

i'd also suggest to decide on the model you fancy, then search for the best price.
i saved £300 on my tv from what currys, comet etc were charging for it.
got it from here.

Dixons are alot cheaper than Currys and Comet online too.

May I suggest Richer Sounds. Lowest price guarenteed and they are experts.

Wouldn't touch LG.

Why not?  I've not had any problems at all with mine (2 years old) and have been very impressed with my mate's (1 week old) one, though he spent a little more and got a slightly bigger (and better) one than mine.

LG are cracking value for money as the brand can't command a premium like the Sony/Panasonic/Samsung's can.

LG use Samsung panels don't they? The ones I've seen have generally looked pretty good (except where they're badly set up in Tescos etc but then they make the Panasonics look ropey too)

I must admit the sister in law got an LG 42" a month ago and the picture quality is as good as my Panasonic 40" and cost £200 less as well.

Nothing wrong with LG. Have a read on avforums.com and you'll see they are very well regarded, there was even a long thread on which was best, an LG or the equivalent Panasonic with opinion being divided.

I got an LG 42PG6000 about six months ago and it rocks, think I paid about £500 to £550 at the time.

I remember LG being a cheap & shit brand originally, but its not the case anymore. Their picture and sound is up there with the best, they look good (arguably the best) and they're normally a fair bit cheaper as well. Panasonic and Sony have the edge still but most people can't tell the difference (or aren't bothered) so why pay the extra money?

Only problem with my LG plasma is that sports in SD don't look brilliant (though still very watchable), but that's more a flaw with plasma than LG. No problem with sports in HD though, they look stunning on it.

I bought an LG 50" Plasma 3 months ago, did loads of research at currys etc, and The best sub 1k for picture quality was the LG. Best place i found to buy was Amazon, as was £280 cheaper than currys and only £4.50 delivery. On top of that they unpacked and took the packaging. Picture quality is superb even on non hd channels, and blinding with my LG BD370 Blu ray.

wasn't that long ago that they were getting poor reviews jonny.when looking for mine(2 years ago)lg soon got scratched off the list of possibilities for that reason.
personally i'd not look at anything other than panasonic, unless the deal was unbelievably good on a sony.
that said, my parents goodmans tv puts some other top brand tv's to shame, which i found them after they wanted a cheap but decent tv.
at work we have an accoustic solutions tv and it is absolute shit.

What's football like on it in SD? As I said, mine isn't brilliant though its better once you're about 10 foot away though I'm probably just being picky as its still great to watch. I notice the HD difference most with football though.

Whilst I haven't got Blu Ray I did get an LG DVD Recorder as well, I've been watching Lost through it and the upscaling / picture quality is so good its put me off buying a Blu Ray at the moment. I watch everything else through my V+ and that probably helps as its supposed to have upscaling as well.

I think it was the new range they released in 2008 was the big improvement, pretty certain they were the ones getting favourable reviews compared to Panasonic at the time and they're still getting good reviews now.

Football on SD is really good, i actually used that to benchmark in shops, on a lot of the tv's you would get ball trails, or fuzzy picture. dont get any of that on mine. I would only go to Blu Ray if you watch stuff like natures great events or films with lots of scenery, it does make a difference, for your normal type indoor film for example DVD is good enough.  What i do like about my player is it hooks directly to Youtube via cat5 to my tv box, quite often end the evening with a beer watching music clips.

I want a 50"+ TV soon, my 37" initially seemed massive but you soon get used to it and I think it's quite small now.

Likewise.

My 40 inch Samsung seemed massive at first but now I think it's quite small!

I'm getting a 50 inch Panasonic Plasma soon.

I'm not overally bothered by HD I guess I could stretch to £650.

In truth I've got £2,000 to spend but I need a few other things out of that.

Go as big as you can afford. I have a 30 ft lounge and initially the 50 looked really big, but 3 months on even the wife is saying maybe i should have gone bigger!

Richer Sounds have fuck all knowledge apart from knowing how to sell you a deal.

If you're on a budget and do your research then it's perfect, otherwise it's very easy to get suckered into buying crap.

I like the idea of a nice tv, but it truth i've bought tat and not noticed the difference. Of course, stick it next to something posh, and it's obvious, but I don't have something posh to put it next to, so to me it's the same as any other.

I have a second TV, because secretly i'm well posh, and it's got a contrast ratio of 800:1 or 1:800 i don't know, but damn if i can tell the difference when viewed on it's own between that and my flash sister's 50" Pioneer. Other than the massive heat her's gives out of course. ;)
