Bit of a hard one to predict. We've not got the best record at the Bescot.I'd settle for a draw.

Not that i'm too bothered.I'm going shopping after work,i need some retail therapy.Been a hard week.

I think we'll lose. I'll go for 1-0 and we'll have a man sent off.

Although this is the second time I'm going to spend Saturday in my local. Last time I did this we beat Southend.

If we do win today, I might just starting believing and dreaming we are a good side. We look a good side, but good sides win the likes of home games against Colcester we had the chances didn't take them. 3pts at Walsall is a must.

Can't decide today, could go either way . It's a game of two halves. At the end of the day the best side will win. You know what I mean.

Walsall aren't a bad team, so I won't be unhappy with a point. As long as we go and put a performance in, and stop wasting decent chances, I'll be happy enough.

Unfortunately, I can't go today as I'm moving half my worldly belongings back to London. Right after the game has finished on the radio!

hey, we drew last week and i went. ingvild hasn't yet witnessed a swindon town defeat.

combine that with the fact mex started the thread and the signs are that we can't possibly lose!

If Revell plays like he did last week he could well open his account for us today. He found space well and made some good runs

Agreed, I think we will miss Greer but Morrison is a good replacement.

I suppose so.

Thats a pretty inexperienced backline though.

Amankwaah, Morrison, Cuthbert and LJF.

We usually need some experience in there, well we have done over the last few seasons (vincent/williams/greer)

Title: Re: scruffy pretend yammers with a underage red light area v swindon matchday thread
Post by: Nemo on Saturday, September 19, 2009, 13:31:40
I think today will give us a good idea of quite how good Cuthbert actually is, because he's now the senior member of the centre back pairing, and he needs to help guide Morrison as well as playing his own game.

Title: Re: scruffy pretend yammers with a underage red light area v swindon matchday thread
Post by: The Professor on Saturday, September 19, 2009, 13:34:34
I think Cuthbert will be the dominant personality in what is, in league terms a pretty inexperienced back line.  Didn't he play a whole season for Motherwell?  He's also captained the Scotland U-21 side so he'll the the most senior pro out there.  Never predict scores but I hope we gain at least one point although 3 would be better.

You can hardly call Amankwaah inexperienced either. Greer will be missed though.

a quick look on Wiki says Cuthbert has played 37 senior league games. Morrison has played 26 and his middle name is also Joseph!!

LJF 35 and big Kev 191

of course its Wiki so could be well wrong

At H.T. I'd think about subbing Revell, with Easton or Timlin and going 4:4:2 and put Kennedy on for JFL before he gets sent off.  Oh-bad-day to join Paynter up front.  With 20 min. to go , bring on Macca for whomever-can't-be-arsed, if we are still behind.

1-1 and to be honest im dissapointed.

Sounds like we were shite first half whilst they were good and we were good second half whilst they were in a very giving mood. If Paynter had scored the first penalty would we still have got the second one and won 2-1. If we'd let Lucas take them he'd be our joint top scorer!!

We were losing till Parkin came on.

just on way home now, first half we were poor really missed greers leadership,we struggled to take hold of the game in midfield and half time couldn't come soon enough.Danny obviously did a great team talk and made good changes.Kennedy was immense kept there best player really quiet second half,he has to be a strong contender to start next week.Mcnamee and macklin caused them loads of problems when they came on.Paynter missed a chance from a yard and his first penalty but showed real character to put the second one away. They were better first half we were better second so a draws prob a fair result.Another good point and we are still undefeated since opening day.

Listening to the fans' phone in on BBC Radio Berkshire earlier...for a laugh.  My favourite call went something like this:

'This was Peterborough, for God's sake.  We're a laughing stock.  If Madejski doesn't want to spend the Premiership money on new players now he'd be as well selling up - to anyone, I don't care who.  I had a taste of the big time 2 years ago so forget all your 'rebuilding phase' rubbish.  I want back there now.'

Don't know where to start really.  Reading fans make it so easy for you to dislike them.  My early tip for relegation.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I don't understand why Tope isn't starting up front, with McNamee and Macklin on the wings / wide midfield. Tope is a striker, McNamee always creates chances and Macklin deserves a chance as he's done ok so far.

Honestly, I think partly because that means we can only play 2 of Douglas, McGovern and Ferry in the middle.

Just back from the game, and I thought that 1-1 was probably a reasonable reflection on the game.  Though I do think that Paynter could have scored his header from 1 yard out, and was pretty unlucky with the first penalty.

Our midfield was completely bypassed in the first half and we didn't create too much, though they never created too much either.  Second half we were much better, with Odebayi actually trying and running into dangerous areas, while Kennedy was excellent and put some great balls over the top of their full-back.

I still think that Odebayi doesn't offer enough to warrant a third striker spot, let's go 4-4-2 and get some ball into Paynter and Revell, they both caused problems to the defence (though that giant McDonald was winning everything in the air) when McNamee and Macklin put in some good crosses.

Overall, decent performance in the second half, and we could have won it, but the ref (and linesmen) was a real homer and we went to sleep too often at the back (Morrison) so a draw isn't the end of the world.  Paynter should have scored that header, though.

Just back from the game, how we werent 3 or 4 nil down at half time ill never know we were awful, Lescinal with the worst half from a Swindon player ive seen for years!! Revell looked good but we seem to go long ball when he plays which doesnt suit us!  Good fightback second half we deserved the draw and McNamee and Macklin both played well and looked dangerous. Missed Greer big time wait till u see Morrisons mistake for the goal awful!!  How Did Billy miss that header from 1 yard out!!

Thought Lescinel was poor but so was the whole team for most of the game. He also always had 2 players to deal with.

I'd just finished slagging off Obadeyi when he moved up front and caused some real problems for Walsall and at least he could beat defenders without being offside. Same with Macklin really.

Overall a poor game but even though it wasn't good we still didn't lose.

Honestly, I think partly because that means we can only play 2 of Douglas, McGovern and Ferry in the middle.

I reckon we only need two of them, as they're a vast improvement on what we had last season. Plus the defence is a lot stronger and we didn't have the solid / defensive midfielder that we now have in Douglas. I know we're doing well, but there is potential for us to do a lot better.

The number of times we were caught offside reduced dramatically when Revell went off - not knocking the fella, but he and Billy aren't the quickest and had them caught every time. Tope finally had a decent spell when moved up front and you could see the difference.

Fair fucking play to Billy Paynter though, most other people would've passed over the chance to take another penalty, having missed the first.

Also, Walsall's fans are shit.

I dont know? Maybe I am expecting too much considering where we are in the table but I thought both Walsall, and Yeovil were due a caning, yet on both occassions I believe that we were terrible!

We were truly awful today against an average team that we made look good.

I personally think that Kennedy & MacNamee played well when they came on and Douglas improved in the second half but we were half asleep for 45 minutes.

On the positive side it is now 9 games undeafeated since Gillingham and some winnable games in the next few weeks. It would be good to see Wycombe get a spanking next week to get us back on track.

When will they realise that they over achieved in getting to the Prem in the first place. Just because you've played a couple of seasons in there, it doesn't mean you deserve to be there. They have only played in the top flight for two seasons in their history.Reading have historically been a lower league team and the sooner they realise this the better.

didn't think lecs was that bad. i love watching him play though...

first half we were poor, second half we dominated so a draw was a fair result.

paynter shouldn't have missed that chance before the penalty.

morrison had a disaster but improved as the game went on, awful mistake - another case of letting the ball bounce instead of attacking it (even though he didn't play last week)

obadeyi is still frustratingly inconsistent and makes too many simple mistakes.

keeps the unbeaten run going, so can't complain.

After the game i was a bit 'meh'. They battered us first half, we should have had 3 in the second half so all in all not a bad result, the points keep ticking over. Kennedy, Macklin and Macca all did very well when they came on. Tope actually looks like a footballer when he's playing up top, more of a threat and outlet.

My BIGGEST gripe with today was our own fans, which is becoming a common trait of games. Why why why spend your hard earned money to go to games simply to shout and moan at your own players. The person next to me went mental because lucas kicked it long: 'whats the Fucking point in that Lucas, Billy's never going to get that...'  Paynter then flicked it on...

Bloke in front: Billy Paynter is inept, get him off DW..why was he taking the penalty...what a shit penalty, get off Billy you piece of shit...Oh FFS why's he taking this penalty...Cue mad celebrations when slotted home.

ALL game the handful of people around me were just moaning and moaning about our players, so close to just saying shut the fuck up, ok we're not playing great but hammering them when we're on a decent run isnt going to achieve anything at all...Sorry some of our fans just do my nut in

It cost me lots.

Oh and I did listen to the game. Fair play to Ed, the reports on here match exactly what he was saying.

Town fans were loud on occasions...seeing as there were 750-ish of us and only 4k5 in the ground I would be worried if I was the owner of Walsall.

We were awful in the first half, 3 of the back 4 were having, to put it mildly, below average days (Morrison and LJF were terrible). The mistakes we were constantly making at the back put more pressure on the midfield who just couldn't get a foothold into the game - Ferry and JPM seemed to touch the ball half a dozen times in the half altogether. Paynter/Revell were living off scraps and getting caught offside repeatedly - Revell should've done better when he tried to lob the keeper.
Second half, much better and as people have said Macca and Kennedy did well, along with Macklin once he came on. Tope looked better through the middle (again). Fair play to Paynter for taking the second penalty, but he'll be kicking himself for that miss.

Oh and as bad as the Walsall fans were, singing Super Sammy Parkin when he comes on as a sub for the opposition when we're losing is not much better.

I stated this earlier this morning.

We were one of the favourites for relegation, so maybe we should all take a reality check, this was a good result, mid-table this season would be well above our expectations.

Not really, mid-table was where a lot of us expected we'd end up this season. Just because journo's at FFT and the tabloids had us down for relegation, I don't think there were too many town fans expecting us to struggle too badly.

But a draw away from home is still an ok result. Winning home games is the priority if we want to push for more than mid-table, and we just need to pick up draws away from home, except against teams like Yeovil!

considering the horrors of the first half, i think we can take a lot from our second half performance. the change in personnel and system was positive and had a great effect. the players didn't become disheartened after paynter's missed header and penalty. we came back to get a point despite the fact we could have been 3 or 4 nil down by half-time.

swindon teams of the recent past would have collapsed and sunk without trace. i think you can take positives out of the result, if not neccesarily the performance.

Although we were pretty poor in the first half we still could have had a couple with Douglas having a shot cleared off the line and Revell missing a very good chance trying to lob the 12ft tall keeper.
Second half we were the better side and at least deserved the draw. Billy P should have scored a hat trick but the time for remonstration is after the final whistle not during the game. Even so I thought Revell offered more than Billy today and (unless he had an injury) was maybe unlucky to be subbed.
Tope is frustrating to say the least. Although he has a poor touch he was a handful in the second half with the runs behind their full backs that he made (Macklin and Macca too).
Mentions must go to Kennedy for a very assured performance in the second half both going forward and defensively and to Manky for generally busting a gut for us all game possibly sneaking MOM for us ahead of Douglas...IMO.
A point away is not to be sniffed at but we could have snuck all three !

It's a tough one, as Lescinel can be very good, but seems to be hit and miss, whereas Kennedy appears to have that desire and eagerness that comes with youth.  Kennedy can pick a pass better, and his crossing yesterday was excellent, but he's still young and isn't quite up to the athletisism of Lescinel.

In summary: I don't know.

I personally would have McNamee starting over Odebayi every time, purely for his crosses that went into dangerous areas almost every time.  Revell and Paynter love that sort of ball.

Macklin is slightly different, as he's still more of an impact player for me.  He definately needs game time, though, as he looks to be getting better and better, as any young player should.

I wouldn't have any qualms about Kennedy playing from the start, but JFL has improved too so it is happily DW that has to decide. Although JFL didn't have a great game yesterday I do think he was left exposed on a few occasions with two players to mark. This may have had something to do with the midfield in the first half seeming a bit all over the place. Put on the spot I'd pick Kennedy (he knocks the ball around really well and puts a wicked cross in !)
Macklin is showing now that he will become an increasingly important player for us as he is improving all the time (deserved a penalty yesterday, Homer Ref missed that too) and I reckon will get a chance starting before the season is out. Macca for me remains one of our most frustrating players when he seems good enough to do a bit more (but he did well yesterday and I am being greedy)

I really dont know what happened to our team first half? At half time I felt the same way I did at Jills, totally dejected! Unlike Jills though, Wilson sorted it out at half time and we could have won. Walsall should have been 3-0 up and out of site at HT, they were decent, pressed us hard, denied us any space, we kept making mistakes at the back.

Second half we were much better, but Im still pretty dissapointed that we didnt manage to score from open play. We were doing all the attacking, but we had to rely on the ref which again is dissapointing.

Agree about the general moaning about the support. Never understand people who bother to go all that way to sit in silence, or worse moan to their hearts content. There seemed to be a lot of famillies and couples up there, and before anyone gets on my back, I dont mind it. But if you go away you should support in my view. You dont get any respect for turning up or wearing a replica shirt! That said, I agreed with the Sam Parkin chant. I think sometimes our current players need reminding that they can leave the club and be fondly remmembered, they can leave a legacy of Swindon Town history. He's the only player still playing who gets that reaction, so its not as if we are doing it every week.

The thing is the fans know we have a half decent team, that's why 800 showed up. Remmember what a true supporter is.

I full on shouted the guy next to me down yesterday, every time Vincent did anything he would say 'go on jamie' or 'well done jamie' yet evey time Paynter was near the ball he slagged him off.  He also said he would replace all of our defence immediately after the goal.

There was one incident where i couldn't bite my tounge any more and snapped at him, Paynter made a run going one way then the ball played from midfield went the other but he was convinced Paynter should be getting on to it and it was only that he didn't run that the ball went through to the keeper.

I asked him why he spent the money on making the trip and going to the game if all he's going to do is moan.

He made me so angry and I made sure he knew it.

He probably moaned because in the first half we were unspeakably shite. Don't get me wrong some fans do go overboard on the moaning, but if the team are going to play the way we did in the first half yesterday....or the whole game at Gillingham, they deserve it. I don't agree with the people who will never hear a bad word said against the team either, because they don’t seem to get behind the team either, they seem to simply hide their heads in the sand and hope everything gets better.

Yesterday a large majority of our fans pissed me off due to seeming to be completely uninterested. 'left side, give us a song' no? just sit there looking gormless then. It says it all when proportions of our own fans our singing 'our support is fucking shit'

no, his moanings were completely misplaced, i know we were bad in the first half but the things he had to say were bollocks, his expectations suggested we should be challenging for the champions league not building a squad to compete at league 1 level.

if you want perfect football you may as well give up on the game all together as it just doesn't happen anywhere.

As far as im concerned you pay your money you can do what you want. There have always been mongers at football, moaning about stuff but not entirely sure what they are moaning at.People seem to have a fantasy vision of football where in "the old days"  everyone pulled together, where fans were one and did nothing but support the lads on the pitch.Ive followed town for 20 years, seen promotions and relegations and there have probably been equal amounts of miserable fuckers to happy clappers.I quite like the  misery guts, its not proper football without some grump giving it large in the corner of your eye.You know hes an idiot,so does he deep down...well maybe

I'd start McNamee and move Obadeyi up front from the start.

McNamee should start every game I think

left side give us a song was kind of a nice way of saying, can the lifeless cunts over there please show us they havent come here to fall asleep?

i think left side give us a song has a bit more of a ring to it.

I dont get why we are having a go at each other over the quality of our support yesterday. I was in the middle and thought the right side were loud but the rest of us did join in. The league paper even remarked on our " highly vocal support" which is unusual. I think we should channel all our energies in getting behind the team, it is actually a pleasure to watch ( i didnt go to gillingham!) most of the time.

Our away support is pretty good generally. Yesterdays first half didn't exactly give anyone much to fucking shout about to be honest, but I can see why members of the constantly vocal sections get pissed off with the silent(ish) sections when they dont respond to the left/right side chants.

If you're going to travel 200 odd miles to support the lads while spending 50 quid + doing so, why sit around like a miserable twat?

I was sat as far left as you could possibly sit and didn't hear that chant all game.  Maybe those on the right (No politics please) could sing a little louder.

you must have had ear muffs on as Whits who was sitting quite far left stood up "on his own" and started singing back but no fucker else joined in.

Should be easy to get behind the lads at Brentford. Terrace, low roof, lots of lager. Ideal!

Absolutely. Anybody who wants to go and sit quietly can do so in the upper tier, whilst we make plenty of noise from the )hopefully quite full) terrace. Everybody wins.

I think they've swapped the away end again, back to the other end from the open terrace. It was pretty good in there last time (going back a few seasons).

Each to their ownin my view, dont see why anybody should be obliged to sing. I'm not normally a quiet person in general, but i rarely sing at football as my voice goes after 2 songs, should i not attend then?

Yep. They've put a roof on the big terrace, and put away fans back in the two-tiered stand. I haven't been in there before but I should imagine it'd be ideal for making some noise!

Going back to Brentford, I think that the last time I went the whole of that two tiered home end (which from this thread I now understand to be the away end) was chanting "number number number 6... wank wank wank wank etc" at Gurney.

This was possibly when we very nearly went bust but that was a good chant, that.
