Just had a top weekend in the Brecon Beacons, climbed Pen-Y-Fan yesterday...

Anyone else enjoy a bit of the old rambling?

I'm yer man.....go walking as much as possible at least once a week.

I did Pen-Y-Fan in February last year......good because there was still snow on the ground.

Fan  Hir and Fan Brycheiniog are ace lead into a big empty space for Britain.

Getting quite excited about the Right to Roam legislation which the government has passed to open up more land for access,. The norverners gort a load more opened this week, and ours is due soon, so it'll be fascinating to see the form it takes.

Do you ever go walking in Snowdonia as well, Reg?  I'm quite keen to go up there as I'd like to visit Longshanks' castles.  Thinking about climbing Ben Nevis at some point too.  I've been to Scotland maybe 20 times, but only really to cities.

Been to Snowdonia quite a few times, the most recent being about 5 years ago......although Yr Wyddfa is a must do, I suppose.....it is very busy, I was there in the summer though.

The Rhinogs which are south of the main area but contain some interesting stuff and in Rhinog Fawr and Rhinog Fach a couple of decent heights are worth going to if you prefer being a bit off the beaten track.

Ben  Nevis is one I haven't done....one day.

I've walked Offa's Dyke, in three sections, I love it.....but it was 20 years ago.....got a bit of a feeling for doing the southern third in the summer...

I could swear I know you sometimes, Reg, if you hadn't of said certain things to contradict that  :smile1:   There's an avid town fan about your age who loves climbing mountains.

Someone else was telling me today about walking Offa's Dyke as it goes too.

I'm going to climb Ben Nevis this year I think.

Welsh legend has it that the lake at the base of Fan Hir..  Lyn y Fan Fawr is where excalibur was offered by the lady of the lake.

Where do you do the majority of your walking then?  When I was younger I used to stroll around these parts quite alot (e.g.hill forts, long barrows, the white horses).  What's that hill fort overlooking Swindon from the South?  I used to like going up there.

Correct, I went there when I was younger. So going there again bought a few memories back.

Good stuff, pip :smile1:   I went there with school, but all I can remember is throwing rocks out of a toilet and someone else getting in trouble for it.

Liddington.....a favourite place.....weekly stuff would be a 30 mile radius of Swindon, then away days further afield......Dorset , Forest of Dean, Exmoor, Somerset Coast, Wales....a big space, you can be in the Black Mountains in an hour and a half.

Holidays.. to bits not been before.

I guess my personal favourite in the local area would be Avebury, due to the stone circle, long barrows, and Silbury Hill all being in the immediate vicinity.  Not as awe strikingly impressing as say a castle, but well worth a visit nevertheless.

I like teh walk along the old railway track in Calne out past Black Dog Halt, over the new bridge.

Past the site of Stanley Abbey with its medieval fishponds, then a bit of road walking through Stanley up to Bremhill for  :beers:  in the Dumb Post then back over the fields to Calne.

Not epic but pleasant enough, gets to take in Bremhill View as well.

Think I misunderstood your question there BP....

OK localish to Calne old  interesting places.....Malmesbury Abbey is always worth a look especially the upstairs bit.

Lacock Abbey is fine with the home of Fox Talbot father of modern photoraphy.

Bradford on Avon is a fine town and has a medieval tithe barn.

The underground workings at Pickwick near Corsham.....are worth a visit....been a while since I went there not sure what happens now....they used to give you a miners lamp and take you round the workings.

Not much further afield and worth a visit is the castle at Farleigh Hungerford.....I'm assuming you know about Bowood Stourhead Longleat etc.

A nice walk along the canal, followed by a look around the tithe barn :smile1:

Where is Fan Hir, Reg? I can't find it on the map.  West Brecons?

Yep....its in an area Y  Mynydd Ddu which translates as The  Black Mountain, which I think confuses people into thinking of The Black Mountains...the path to get there is near the Dan Yr Ogof caves
