I understand the need to protect players from serious abuse over their sexuality, but I think reports go too far in so much as most "homophobic" chants are things like suggesting a player is gay, despite the fact he has a wife and three kids. I don't really see too much of a problem with that, it's just banter, the only real problem in my view would be fans abusing somebody specifically because they ARE gay.

Even then I think the idea of docking points from the club is ridiculous - the league table should not reflect what goes on in the stands.

Stop it.

Has anyone ever heard any homophobic chants at a game?

I don't recall every hearing any, maybe some suggesting a player was gay but then I wouldn't call that homophobic.

Besides, calling a player gay might just be a reference to them being a fun, easy going kind of guy.

Iain Dale the popular gay Conservative West Ham supporting blogger had a good post about the fine line between the dilemma of banter and prejudice in football, earlier this year:

Here's a sample:

Quote
What a remarkable morning’s posting, and funny with it. But here’s the thing. I’m a gay West Ham boxholder (see, we’re everywhere, but mainly near a bar) and to my similarly hard-drinking footie mates that’s about as interesting as whether I’m left or right-handed. But isn’t all of this about context? My black (straight) mate is forever keen to reinforce the stereotype about the size of what’s in his underwear, a Jewish acquaintance is a Spurs supporter and loaded (and gets ribbed for it), I’m always complaining that West Ham players are universally ugly (though things are improving a bit of late). They are only words, it’s malice or intent that matters. By all accounts Carol Thatcher meant nothing by what she said (anyone who has ever seen or heard her would be aware she’s hardly the sharpest knife in the drawer). So consider this: it’s the last ten minutes v Hull, everyone’s up for a corner and in goes Cole, Boa Morte, Ilunga and Faubert, a bit of melee and the ball goes out of play. Bloody hell, I said, no idea what happened there it was just a forest of black, shaven heads. I know said my mate, it’s like looking down on a box of matches from here. Now I think that’s funny, and NOT racist. But dissect it on Radio 4 for a couple of hours and see where it ends up. Bored already.

Never been to a Brighton game then?

And in my opinion it's no different from being called Wurzels or inbreds by opposing fans.

85% of the people who answered the STONEWALL survey agreed with the punishment of those Spurs fans.

People just want to take football and change it for their own agenda. Leave football alone!

I was working in Brighton during their last season in the old game and I went to a cup match. Don't recall hearing anything from the away fans, though it was a good few years ago. I was contracting down there so I lived in a B&B during the week, the best one I stayed in by far was run by a gay couple.

Personally, I'd say "a forest of black, shaven heads" and "it’s like looking down on a box of matches from here" are bordering on racist. Would anyone say something similar if the players were white? Maybe, "its like looking down on a box of cotton wool buds"? I don't think so. Except maybe in Africa.

I think if it was a group of white players with similar hair, e.g. blonde, or ginger, or dark crew cut, then the same sort of comment would probably be deemed perfectly acceptable

Catholic gays go to Hell, Muslim gays I'm not sure about but I think they end up in Muslim Hell equivalent - Luton? I need to look up about gay Budhists.
I think most right minded men would steer clear of whopping it up the Gary Glitter and gping to hell regardless of religion.
I don't think lesbians go to hell - they just get put on DVD as long as they're not the hairy arsed kind that would beat you in an arm wrestle.

This is actually incorrect. Its a well known fact that Church of England vicars are into buggery whilst Catholic priests will shag anything - man, boy, woman, dog, goldsish, china cabinet, cucumber etc

My understanding is though, Catholicism taken literally means anyone having sex outside of marriage goes to hell, yet there are plenty of self-identified, practicing catholics who do so.  Its no different with homosexuality.

What are "right-minded men"?  People are different.  Some men, and some women, are gay.

Title: Re: The Gayers.....

Right minded men live by the adage that your dick belongs in one of three places - in your trousers, in your hand or in a woman.
I'm going to hell because I had sex outside marriage - maybe as I'm an atheist I can dodge this bullet. I'd like to know how the fuck you have sex inside a marriage - once the ring is on its a different ball game.

I tend to prefer the "each to their own" adage myself.  The right minded men argument is a bit weak.  To put it crudely, plenty of straight men are bad people.  Plenty of gay men are good people.  To make an incredibly spurious comparison, who would you rather have met, Oscar Wilde or Stalin?  Sounds silly, but you cannot seriously argue straight = good, gay = bad.

I don't need to make a decision its been made for me by God and Mohammed. You can always quote extremes to back up your argument. Statistics are great for populations but not for individuals - maybe thats what God and Mohammed were working on. Have you got any idea about gay Buddhists.

You've made a great point - it is about individuals, and individuals are free to be gay, straight, bisexual or whatever they want to be.  If you are an atheist, surely you can't believe a decision has been made for you by God, as you don't believe there is a god.

And no.  I have no information about gay Buddhists.  I bet there are some though.

So basically religion is a pick and mix. I'll have the bits I like and be fucking horrified if anyone transgresses these but I will happilly transgress other aspects I don't like about my religion. I'll shove it up the Gary Glitter but that Salman  Rushdie is going to die for Satancic Verses.

No.  To me, religion is nothing.  As I've said, I'm an atheist.  I also believe people are free to be gay, straight, or whatever they want, as long as it hurts noone.  I do know though that many religious people do things that are outside of what is acceptable to their religion.

Terms such as gay, homosexual and queer are used to describe people and not the activities they indulge in. It is interesting that partaking in a particular sexual practice can so completely define a person.

The term gay and even homosexual are relatively recent. Prior to that men who indulged in buggery were just regarded as extremely licentious i.e they would screw anything if they had the opportunity.

So it shouldn't be as you say choosing to be gay just choosing to practice, when you have the opportunity, a particular form of sexual deviance/perversion. As long as it is done in private, between consenting adults, this is no big deal.

I would be a lot more comfortable about them if they would just keep their activities to themselves and please leave God out of this.

Wrong Flash. By taking a particular stance then it is fair to assume that one indulges. If you are a pilot, then you must have flown a plane ! The paramaters are quite clearly set : licentiousness doesn't exist as it used to. As for God, are you a Roman Catholic priest by any chance ?

You miss my point - which is that people choose to identify themselves totally on the basis of this indulgence. The  pilot on the plane may have only one leg, have indulged in necrophilia, collect stamps and be second in line to the British throne. Does this mean he is to be solely identified as a pilot.

Reference to any English dictionary will confirm that licentiousness is a word that is in current usage and the definition describes behaviour that is currently prevelent.

I am actually a Fascist - so just because I go around in a black shirt and tell people what to do doesn't make me a Roman Catholic priest

Erm, I don't think it's gays who usually drag God into it.

But back on topic, this survey just smacks of being as much about people's prejudices about football as about the reality. How many of the respondents have actually been to a game and how many are just reacting to what they perceive to be the case based on reporting of Sol Campbell getting "vile abuse" etc?

It looks like Buddhists are on the fence on this one, although it appears to be a religion that attracts gays. Maybe its the fact they're not anti that attracts gays.If my wife looks at the internet history she might ask me a few questions. As to what my Mrs calls me, Lardy seems to be a popular if unromantic favourite.
