Title: European Lagers :)
Post by: STFC_Gazza on Tuesday, August 11, 2009, 19:27:09
I absolutely love them, at the risk of sounding sounding too L&P Forum like. What are yours? I prefer european lagers to the usual Carling etc...

I love Bitburger, Erdinger, Pilsner Urquell!

Company I work for is opening a pub in Bath (well re-naming the Rat & Parrot to The Westgate) to becoming a world beers pub. You get a passport and you "drink the world" with the chance of winning prizes. Think i will be frequenting this pub every so often :)

Lovely stuff. Wish I could find Bitburger on tap locally. I know Adnams pubs over in Suffolk do it!

This is true, but also in Norfolk, loads of adnams pubs. My ex used to live right next to the mustard pot in norwich, nice little pub by carrow road.

My little bro lives there, but your pubs are pricy so I'll tell him to steer clear.

Basically everytime you order a pint in your "passport" you get it ticked off and then you drink the passport, so you try every beer on there!

Black lagers are wonderful - Czech ones in particular. Bernard do a dark and it is brilliant. And it is in Tescos.

Erdinger is good especially since they do an almost booze -free version of their wheat. Great if your partner is up the duff and hates alcohol-free Becks .

I wouldn't normally contribute to a thread discussing lager.

But Chimay Red. Very nice. Though I would consider it more an ale than a lager. Although my last taste of it was a good 4 years ago, so I may be wrong. Sierra Nevada is more an ale than a lager too. Certainly a dark lager (if such a beast exists).

They do. All lager was dark until the Pilsner style was invented.

I don't normally drink lager but I make an exception for good wheat beers and black lagers.

I don't really like amstel, it was one of the only ones they had in amsterdam and to be honest I would choose stella over that every time, it's only marginally better than heineken and carlsberg. I like hoegaarden a lot and Staropramen and grolsch are ok. Had a few czech lagers before and I think they were alright.

The mention of Arkells and beer passports reminds me of a summer back in 82, when Arkells had a promotion whereby if you visited so many of their pubs and got a stamp on a "passport" it entitled you to free beer.

With some mates we resolved to cycle to some of their more obscure outposts and collect our stamps. Its surprising the size of their empire.

I did the Arkells passport tour in 1982 as well with some mates but we were lazy and drove to the more obscure outposts . Fair play to you Reg if you cycled back up Blunsdon Hill after visiting the Highwayman !

Fair play...you can avoid Blunsdon, by coming around the back of Cricklade and then Purton....it's amazing how beer fuels a good pedal...much better than EPO.

Most bars in resort do Amstel, it's the last thing i'd want to drink in england (assuming fosters isn't an option).

We sell a great deal of it in the bar, as we do Peroni and Star, of which Star is my favourite.

Chimmay is the real deal, one of only 9 (i think) actual 'Trapistes' left in Belgium - which is beer brewed by monks in the monestary.  Some of the remaining 8 are only available if you make the effort the travel to the requisit monestary and really sweet talk the monks into letting you buy a crate.

We do Erdinger too, the white beer they do at least - i hate white beer - rubbish.  We also stock Duvel which we are only allowed to serve in halves because at 6.8% it is too strong for British consumption.

For the record we also sell Becks Vier, Carlsberg, Guiness Extra Cold, Heiniken, London Pride and Paulaner - all on tap with quite a selection of bottled beers from around the world too.

I love my job, I really do.

Where are the Southern African beers?!  No Windhoek (Namibia), and no Castle (South Africa).  Some selection of 'WORLD' beers.....

And if you come to SA for the World Cup, I recommend either of the two above, although we do have Amstel as well.  Not to mention Peroni on tap in most places.

I love trying the different beers from around the world. Soooo much better than the cooking lager shite like Carling and Fosters that you get in the UK pubs.

Luxembourg lager is pretty rank. Diekirch is the best of a bad bunch, then you have Mousel and Bofferding which is utterly rank but the 'secret of Luxembourg' apparently. Bottled beers are very cheap and the Portuguese influence evident. The excellent Sagres and Super Bock can be purchased for between 50-90 cents a bottle.

German beers are probably my favourite, in my local (which is Portuguese) they do a great Weiss beer called Frankziskaner (I always ask for a bottle of Frank Skinner, but the bar maids never get my hilarious jape!) and trusty Erdinger is available as well. Had Paulaner before which is very nice and also had Kolsh in Cologne and a local Weissbeer in Mainz which was very very nice. Been to Bitburg before and drank Bitburger which is ok but not a massive fan of it. (its 5% on Mainland Europe, says 4.8% on that list)

Had Windhoek, Castle and Carling Black Label in SA, all pretty decent, nothing stood out massively between those 3.

Polish beers are ace. Zwiecz and Tyskie are strong but drinkable and the women that serve are usually of a very high standard.

In India I was shocked and appalled to find that the locals all drink imported piss water Fosters, I did my best to educate them, Kingfisher is a great lager however they all prefer Fosters, woe is me!! Kingfisher is 4.8% in India, on that list it says 4.2.

Brussels was great to try beer, sooooo many different types. Duval is nice, Chimay, Kwaak are the ones I can remember at the moment and I do enjoy a fruit beer in the summer which the Belgians do very well.

Spain I wasn't overly impressed with. Estrella Damm in Barcelona is adequate as is the beer in Madrid, the name I forget, however I don't like San Miguel at all.

Other beers to note are the delicious Brahma beer from Brazil which I have drunk this week as well as Staropramen from the Czech Republic which for me, is only ok.

Off to Slovakia, Hungary and Austria later in the year to see what they offer!!

The black lagers are a favourite of mine, and indeed Tesco have 3 on sale (as well as dark wheat beer).  The black lagers in Slovenia are called Temno (can't remember my fav from when I was there).  Overall, the Slovenian black lagers were good.  Obviously Czech and German lagers are top quality.  Hungarian lagers should be avoided.
