Title: iPod's Post by: sonicyouth on Sunday, May 29, 2005, 22:43:18 a few questions for you lot, I'm sure Reg and OST in particular will be most excited about this topic.
Value wise, am I better off going for an 20gb iPod or a 4gb iPod mini? I have 40gb of music on my HDD already, but the vast majority of it isn't stuff I will want to listen to day-in day-out anyway, the iPod mini is also a lot smaller and lighter (from what I can tell, I haven't had a chance to compare them directly) which would be ideal for college. How long does it take to transfer an average size song (5mb) to the iPod from your PC? Is it possible to manage playlists in iTunes and send them to your iPod seperately? i.e. I could put all my hip-hop stuff on one day, then remove it and put a mix of stuff on instead. What's the battery life like? I've been playing with one tonight and the sound quality is pretty impressive and it's persuaded me to lean towards an iPod mini rather than the massive fuckers, which will end up having so much music on it'll take me hours to find a single track. Is it worth getting one off Ebay as opposed to retail stores? price comparisons for iPod mini (http://audiovisual.kelkoo.co.uk/ctl/do/sort?pid=9162978&catId=122701&field=totalprice&sortcolumnid=total_price) price comparisons for iPod 40gb (http://audiovisual.kelkoo.co.uk/ctl/do/sort?pid=10686671&catId=122701&field=totalprice&sortcolumnid=total_price) Title: iPod's Post by: DMR on Sunday, May 29, 2005, 22:52:32 I've got an iPod mini so can't totally help but the size of them is much better and I reckon they look better. I can tell you this, the mini is great for college!
Transfer time for me (judging on a 15 track album I've just done) equates to 1 min per song, give or take a bit, probably less You can set up all your own playlists and it'd keep them in order, yeah Battery life for mine is about 13 hours until it's nearly dead, which is not bad really. I've got all my 4gb used up with 1100 songs which is plenty given that I keep chopping and changing I don't know much technical stuff because I'm not a nerd Title: iPod's Post by: sonicyouth on Sunday, May 29, 2005, 22:54:49 cheers dave 8)
Technical stuff won't mean owt to me anyway, I'm not as much of a nerd as I look. 1100 songs is plenty really, 20gb would probably be overkill. Title: iPod's Post by: DMR on Sunday, May 29, 2005, 22:55:52 As much as I'd like to say I could I probably wouldn't be able to fill 20gd anyway
Even if I could I wouldn't bother trying 8) Title: iPod's Post by: sonicyouth on Sunday, May 29, 2005, 22:57:52 I could fill it twice but I don't see the point because I'm not likely to listen to that much music at college
Title: iPod's Post by: DMR on Sunday, May 29, 2005, 23:03:19 You'd be suprised!
Title: iPod's Post by: oxford_fan on Tuesday, May 31, 2005, 03:04:35 i'd definitely get a normal sized one unless you're female or gay. i've got a 20gb and have to delete some old crap of it every now and again to fit new stuff on, I kinda wish I'd saved up a bit more and got a 40gb.
the size doesn't matter, normal one is small enough plus i think has a better screen. a song takes about 1 second to go through. yes you can manage playlists in itunes and send them to ipod. download itunes now and have a play around, it's free and a decent music prog. battery life is about 6-8 hours on my one: http://www.ipod.com.ua/images/top_iPod1.jpg and is boosted by turning the backlight off (big drain) and lightening the contrast a little. and i'd buy new unless ebay sellers have a solid rep. Title: iPod's Post by: McLovin on Tuesday, May 31, 2005, 08:14:11 I got a cheaper version of the 20gb iPod and it was the best decision i ever made. Well, it was a good decision.
Title: iPod's Post by: janaage on Tuesday, May 31, 2005, 08:29:44 My Mrs has just bought a 4gb Ipod, seems to do the job well enough. We managed to get songs on there at about 15-25 sec per song. Very impressive stuff.
Title: iPod's Post by: Kinky Tom on Tuesday, May 31, 2005, 08:35:58 Get the 20Gb SY, mine is pretty much my favourite thing (apart from pro evo 8) ), and I've had it 1.5 years.
Transfer rate, as OF said is abou5t 1 song per second, obviously this will depend on the speed of your machine etc. Battery life is the only pig really, but will last you a day at college. I've bought a seperate pack for it too, which takes 4 'AA' batteries and will charge it up nicely. Title: iPod's Post by: sonicyouth on Tuesday, May 31, 2005, 13:52:37 bah now I'm tempted to go for the 20g instead. Damn you all.

http://www.iriver.com/html/product/pr_index.asp Much better functionality and value for money. Title: iPod's Post by: Leggett on Tuesday, May 31, 2005, 18:44:01 iRiver's are good, but im a sucker for a Sony...
i've got this; http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0002T3UPG.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg a friend of mine has the newer model, the HD3, and they're bloody boss!!! i love mine, 20gb, much, much smaller than a 20gig ipod (that pic, on my 17" monitor, is bout 10-15% bigger than real life size.) its a bit more expensive, but its worth it. Title: iPod's Post by: sonicyouth on Tuesday, May 31, 2005, 19:15:24 oh damn it, I'm a Sony fan boi as well. If I bought an iPod it'd be the first non-computer piece of technology I will own that's not Sony. Except my mobile...
I'm going to have to check that out. Title: iPod's Post by: Whits on Tuesday, May 31, 2005, 19:26:34 someone at work won one of those sony things, looks mint, quite heavy though
Title: iPod's Post by: sonicyouth on Tuesday, May 31, 2005, 19:38:49 I've heard a lot of dodgy stuff about Sonicstage, someone I know who used it lost half their mp3s :/
The 20GB HD1/HD3 aren't much cheaper than a 20GB iPod... Title: iPod's Post by: Dazzza on Tuesday, May 31, 2005, 19:38:51 Got a 20GB although I must admit I don't really find the opportunity to use the thing much at the moment.
I purchased mine from the States about 6 months back and just purchased a mains converter. Not sure if there is much to be saved from purchaing abroad now so may be best just sticking to the UK. Check out the website as they had some sort of deal every Thursday morning they sold reconditioned babies with a waranty for a fraction of the price. Make sure you get a screen cover if your picky about that sort of thing as they scratch to buggery. Title: iPod's Post by: Leggett on Tuesday, May 31, 2005, 19:44:36 if you register the mp3 player on teh sony website, they have an update download for sonicstage, i personally have never had any trouble (other than switching the mp3 player off straight after detatching it from the hub (not letting it set up the database, it wont work), and not discovering it till iwas at work  ) i'm only using 5gig or so, my mate has 11gig and his is fine.
Title: iPod's Post by: sonicyouth on Tuesday, May 31, 2005, 19:50:24 I prefer the iPod, it looks sexier (I have a thing for minimalism) and it plays VBR mp3s, which is what most of my collection is. I also know iTunes is alright and doesn't have a tendency to delete all of your music.
Anyone got one of those iPod to casette things for car stereos? What's it like? |
