When I saw him on Sunday he looked so bad yet still had a smile. I'm glad he lived to see his charity match.

It was a privilege to have been among the 30,000 there.

76 is still quite 'young', and thought he was in good health? Heart-attack?

How bizarre.

Anyway, a true football legend and it's a sad loss to the game.

I was only 6 during Italia '90 but I remember much of it really well. The Cameroon and West Germany game in particular because even my mum (who loathes football and pretty much divorced my dad for making her go to fixtures such as Exeter away in the early 80's) was watching it. I was already watching football on tv pre-World Cup and often told of

Oddly, the goal that sticks out most of all was Lothar Matthaus' against Yugoslavia (probably due to living in Fallingbostel at the time) but it's Sir Bobby Robson's work during that summer that made me beg my dad to take me a football match when I visit England next.

It was Swindon vs. Port Vale - November 1990 :)

RIP.

He had a sterling innings and had a cracking life, which he led to the full right to the very end.  Sad to see the old fella go but I think his time had come and as I remember in an interview he once gave he wanted to go while the marbles we’re still rolling around upstairs.

Italia 1990 has to be his defining moment for me.  That side were not the best I’ve ever seen but by Christ they’re the last team that all appeared to give a damn and played with genuine pride.

Top man, gentleman, footballing man RIP SRR!

Following on from my sentiments, we had just moved to East Anglia when Mr (as he was then) Robson was fashioning a great team at Ipswich.  Although we were living in Norwich City country, it was a pleasure to watch Ipswich play under him, great European nights as well.

I left a Swindon scarf within the many black and white ones on behalf of all STFC fans who respected the man :)

Exactly how I feel. Most famous people who croak don't get a second thought from me, but Sir Bobby's death has saddened me.

Maybe it's something to do with a shared passion, but more likely it's because he did something that still has great memories to me, namely Italia 90.

I didn't find out until 2 yesterday afternoon when I got in the car to drive home from Bristol. The whole hour and a half journey was spent listening to people remember him. Not one of them had anything but respect and love for the man.

Are you saying all England teams since haven't really cared including the Euro '96 squad?!  ???

Its a fact that one of Sven's main ways to get England to play better was to take out some the emotion of playing for England. It calmed the players down and produced good consistant results. All 3 Sven campaigns were all par for the course.

But its not as good. Before Sven when England were bad they were really bad and given the right run around, and when we were good we could be unbeatable! The highs were higher and the lows were lower, much more fun!

The end of all that was Kevin Keegan's resignation. The last game at Wembley. Soon came banning orders. Football's been getting blander and richer ever since. Boring people won!
