I think if he's fit enough, he'll dominate everyone. As Martin Brundle once said, the bloke could put a wheely bin on pole. If he races in the last 6 races, I expect him to get at least 4 podiums. He's a fucking god.  :notworthy:

Edit: Oh, there's 7 races left. 6 podiums then. :D

Sorry but that is dumb even for F1.

He hasn't driven an F1 car in 16 months and won't be able to until the 1st practice session of the next grand prix. No matter how good you once were, going straight in to a race without any recent experience is just stupid.

At best he will make himself look a prick, at worst he will cause an accident.

I agree he's going to take time to adjust, if he can. But he has been testing with Ferrari, he's not sat at home for 16 months.

I'd be amazed if he pulls podiums out of the bag but he's the best option available, I mean their test drivers aren't exactly world beaters and who else is available at short notice? (Anyone who mentions Bourdais will be laughed out of town)

I agree he's going to take time to adjust, if he can.

But he won't have time to adjust, at best he'll have a couple of hours driving time before the grand prix. I'd have thought you need a bit more time than that before being let loose with a rocket ship on wheels.

Saying he is the best option is stupid as well. There are plenty of test drivers about that could do a good job.

I'm surprised his super car license (or whatever it is called) hasn't been revoked as he hasn't been driving recently.

bollocks, ferrari will have him on a secret test track for the next 4 weeks and a high member of the FIA will be 100,000 euros richer.

Title: Re: michael schumacher returning to F1
Post by: Barry Scott on Wednesday, July 29, 2009, 22:09:36
Here's hoping. I think they'll be many ways to get him some experience in the car. They'll probably knock up some simulation mule and let him chuck it around Fiorano for a few weeks. I expect he's already driven the car behind closed doors at some point.

The Scalextric one?

Random comment, but James May is building a Scalextric track around the old Brooklands circuit for his next TV series - about 2 miles or something in total. Best part is a lot of the circuit isn't there any more, so there are bridges missing and roads / housing estates to be crossed. Will be interesting to see if he manages it.

He's also building a full size house entirely out of lego - plumbing and all. Thats james may, not schumacher.

Schumacher doesn't yet have a superlicense, though i can't see it being too much of a challenge for him to get one

I've been discussing this wih my sister, who makes me look like a Schumacher/Ferrari hater. She and I have decided it will be horrible if he messes up, but Ferrari are clearly going to give him free reign on last seasons car for the next 4 weeks. I presume this is allowed and it'll certainly bring him up to race sharpness.

He won't be able to do any testing until practice on the Friday before the race, unless Ferrari bribe the FIA.

Title: Re: michael schumacher returning to F1
Post by: Barry Scott on Thursday, July 30, 2009, 10:10:31
Not even in an older car, last seasons, or the seasons before?

Very good way of putting it JFW. I think similar levels of elation and apprehension would be felt if SSP were to return.

I assume not, all in season testing is banned isn't it?

Schumacher has probably driven the car pre-season anyway.

Title: Re: michael schumacher returning to F1
Post by: Barry Scott on Thursday, July 30, 2009, 10:39:09
Something like that. But I was thinking that there's no advantage to be gained from letting some one practice in an outdated car, so it'd probably be allowed. It's no more than hopeful speculation though, but I do like to think the FIA would allow him to get some time in a car for the sake of fitness, albeit last seasons.

I'm pleased he is coming back. F1 has been boring lately and Schuey spices things up nicely.

Title: Re: michael schumacher returning to F1
Post by: jonny72 on Thursday, July 30, 2009, 12:08:10
It says on the BBC website that he "will not be able to turn a wheel of the 2009 specification Ferrari before first practice on Friday 21 August", so he should be able to practice in last years car. But I'm not sure that will be a lot of help with the changes that were made to cars for the 2009 season, which have radically changed the way the cars perform and handle.

I should point out that the other problem I have with Schumacher returning to F1 is that I think he is a cunt.

He should have been banned for life after taking Hill out.

I think its all a big set-up like WWF wrestling.

Massa is completely fine and it was a staged crash with the injuries all just make up and latex

Schumacher is going to stall on the grid and be the last car on the track all the way to the final bend when he will do a Hulk Hogan style huffing and puffing and overtake everyone and win.

Just to spice the sport up an all that bollox

If he can practice a bit in last years car it will be good to just to get some his body back accustomed to the rigours of F1.  I'd also like to think Ferrari could tweak last years car to perhaps simulate this years car. No doubt they could also secretly swap out the engine, suspension, gearbox, aero and electrics without anyone knowing (if time wasn't an issue). Although then it'd be a case of the old Ship of Theseus paradox and they may as well stick him in the new one illegally.

I don't agree that it's been boring lately. This has actually been one of the most interesting seasons in long time and the last couple were good too. A lot of seasons Schumacher was in were pretty dull with one or two cars being so much faster there wasn't much competition. 2004 for example was an incredibly dull year, the ferraris were so much faster than any of the other cars that any driver in that car with his team-mate under orders to help him would have won easily. Likewise with 2001 and 2002.

Technically yes, realistically no he can't. Too far behind Button with only 7 races to go.

Can he win races? Dubious. Even he he hasn't lost his edge the Ferrari doesn't look like it can challenge right now. Then again, a McLaren like unexpected resurgence or a bit of rain and anything can happen.

The interesting thing will be how he does against Kimi. Kimi will have to take a long look at himself if a 40 year old with limited track time outshines him. Mind you, he's probably gone from Ferrari at the end of the year anyway (probably for Alonso).

Lets face it, Button is a grade A cock. Hamilton needs to win at least 2 more world titles before he can be considered a great driver and F1 is shit compared to BSB and Moto GP.

Schumacher has been testing in the 2007 car apparently. He was on the pace after a couple of laps apparently. He'll take some victories i reckon and could salvage Buttons World Championship.

FOTA have also agreed to let him drive the 2009 car for one days testing, but the FIA have to approve it.

On the F1 V Bikes front, I agree with Si. I can't deny that Moto GP has closer, more exciting racing. But try as I might I just can't get into it. Its just not for me.

Yeah, heard about the 1 days testing in the 2009 car. I'm surprised at that, what with all the FIA and Ferraria being in bed together rumours.

Related to bikes, the main problem Schumacher might have is an injury acquired to his neck and back while racing bikes.
