Title: The Tennis
Post by: Don Rogers Shop on Monday, June 22, 2009, 12:36:41
So is anyone going to be taking an interest in this years.

In the Mens obviously murray has a better chance but if his ankle is ok i fancy roddick to have a decent chance.

In the womans i think Svetlana Kuznetsova

That is all

Murray will do well, reckon he'll make the final and then it's anyone's game.

Laura Robson had a good start, she looks a cracking prospect. Suspect one of the Williams monsters will win the ladies though.

It's a middle class sport in this country, that's probably why I dislike it. I know I'm an inverted snob but I can't help it, I hate the Pimms sipping twats.

Its also a very entertaining sport, that can be viewed without pimms.  Try drinking beer while watching it.  Class shouldn't really come in to it.

And yes, I am very middle class.

I know that class shouldn't really come into it, but for me it does.

Oh and the sooner the middle class fuck off away from football, the better.

So because I'm middle class, my 18 consecutive season tickets, 4 seasons of every game home and away, and countless pounds spent on kits, programmes and other things don't count?

I'll burn my shirts and support Man U if you prefer.

Talk about unity between fans.  Grow up.

Its amazing how one call can lose you a match. If Robson had challenged that service out call in the game that lost her the 2nd set it could have turned out differently, probably would have as she seemed to lose the plot after that.

Still, she is only 15 so taking a seed to a 3rd set is a result. Surprised more people haven't made something of the fact that she was born in Australia. Need to get her playing for GB in the Fed Cup so she can't switch to the Aussies.

I know there's quite a few like you on here and I know and even like some of them. That said, before football became 'fashionable' after Italia '90, football was a genuinely working class sport and better for being so. It's now becoming sanitised and depressing.

Oh and congragulations on 18 consecutive season tickets. Go you.

Really?  thats quite shocking - I used to play alot of tennis when I was younger - we played it at school? and I used to do lessons at the local leisure centre - Im not middle class (well I dont think I am) I grew up on a council estate in Calne but we had access to tennis

I guess if you wanted to follow it seriously you would need megabucks though - I remember watching that programme about pushy parents and that dad who spent loads taking his daughter to America.

Ill watch a bit of Wimbledon - Its funny Ive forgotten most of the rules and stuff now

Hasn't this been covered time and time again. His 'not supporting England' quote was in response to Henman being a cunt about Scotland and winding him up.

I feel that even if he is really anti-English, the best way to annoy him is to support him and claim him as one of our own anyway!

I thought it was good match, Kendrick certainly made Murray play for it.

Murray doesnt like the English football team, as does just about every Scot who ever lives. Same as the Aussies cant stand the English cricket team.

He is British, and he is a winner. I think its a breath of fresh air to see someone in sport who cares more about winning than fame and popularity.

Tennis is an individuals game, a winners game, and I hope he wins it all for himself.

I dont really like tennis. But I do respect that it continues to produce legends of sport. The likes of Federer and Nadal, and their rivalry would have graced any era.

Mind you I wont get there until late and will get a grounds pass but will get there about 6pm so should be fine to get in so they told me on the phone. Working in London so may as well wander down as company is paying for train tickets, if i dont get in, no huge loss!

Title: Re: The Tennis
Post by: Doore on Sunday, June 28, 2009, 22:27:08
I think Murray should get to the semis if he stays on top of his game, and will probably meet Roddick.  That would be a real challenge, especially if Roddick continues to improve and gets close to where he was a few years back.  The variety in Murray's game and his returning may be enough to cope with Roddick's massive serve, but it would be a difficult one.

How Murray stirs up bad feeling is beyond me.  "Scotsman in not supporting England shock".  I just think he is the best British tennis player in 50 years - and therefore gets my wholehearted support.  Not a robot or one trick pony either - a really entertaining player.

Why would I send death threats??? It’s ridiculous. I can understand why people want to support Murray, British, only chance in about 50 years we have had a home born player in with a shout of winning tennis’ greatest prize., I think he is ignorant (joking or not), that’s my opinion, you have a different opinion and that’s fine, it’s my choice not too support him, so because of that I am a retard? Erm… no I don’t believe so. Andy Murray, Great player, no doubt about that and if he wins Wimbledon everyone will forget about the ignorant comments he made and pretend he is English etc., Joking or not its hardly a professional thing to do is it? When most of your fan base will be English. Nothing wrong with being Scottish and patriotic, no issue at all but you don’t see Joe Calzaghe for example saying oh Ill cheer on anyone but the English because the welsh are brilliant? Will I be upset if Murray wins Wimbledon? No of course not I just wont be cheering him on along the way. I think you will find I am not the only “retard” of this opinion, when Murray was on centre court he has had nowhere near the backing that Henman ever had, the crowd reaction hasn’t been close, perhaps that’s because Henman was an under dog where as Murray is expected to do well, who knows?

That's a quite ridiculous post. Firstly, Murray isn't 'getting the backing Henman got', because he's absolutely coasting through his matches, whereas a certain Tim Henman struggled nearly all the time.  And it's quite ridiculous you can't let go about Murray's previous comments towards England. It's brilliant that we have a great British player who is honest and actually has a bit of a bloody personality. It's quite clear you're in a huge minority that refuse to support him, because you only have to look at the huge crowds he's been drawing in a Wimbledon. People were actually being turned away from the queues Saturday. People don't have a problem with him being patriotic towards Scotland, because they realise what a fantastic player he is, and he's got more of a chance of winning Wimbledon at 22 years old than Henman had throughout his career.
Not only that, but look at the hours and hours of work he's put in in training. The difference between his physique, serve, and all-round play from last year to today is surreal. The English have huge respect for the work he's put in to get where he is today, it's a shame a small minority won't do the same. And one more thing, did you see him on Saturday, in the final set where he was clearly going to win. He was STILL running to almost impossible shots, shouting at himself when making errors. We haven't had a more committed British player in god knows how long.

I think it's a bit silly to put the whole national team thing on individual sports. It's not like team sports where they're representing their country, tennis players primarily representing themselves. That's one of the things which made me hate Henman so much and just generally get fed up of tennis, the whole transformation into a (even more) middle class football. "Come on Tim". Fuck off.

He's a good young talent and and seems to have a bit of personality (as far as modern tennis goes). I'd probably support him if he was from Moldova. Couldn't say the same about Henman.

Title: Re: The Tennis
Post by: STFC_Gazza on Monday, June 29, 2009, 08:25:01
You have echoed my sentiments exactly though…. I said that maybe people supported Henman more because he was the underdog, where as Murray is expected to win, that’s exactly what you have highlighted with the “cruising through matches”. I have said that. I also said he is a great player and has a chance of winning Wimbledon, you have just said it in a much longer way than I did if you think about it. I have never said Murray is a shit player at all…. I have always maintained he is a good player, he draws crowds etc. no doubt about that and not knocking him now, I just won’t support him that’s all

Why would I send death threats??? It’s ridiculous. I can understand why people want to support Murray, British, only chance in about 50 years we have had a home born player in with a shout of winning tennis’ greatest prize.

Henman could have won it. In fact I think he'd would have the year Goran beat him in the semi-final. Goran was on his way out when the rain came and saved his ass. Divine intervention - made me laugh as I couldn't stand Henman.

I didn't see that though so it doesn't count. This one had all the elements of a classic, 5 sets, a comeback, British winner and no idea who was going to win right to the end and the first full match under the roof. Superb.

That was an awesome match. Come back and find the thread's 5 pages on which says a lot really.

By the end I wasn't bothered if the wiswiwiwizak dude won. He put a hell of a lot into that. Might have been a bit of a waste though, Murray's clearly got a better chance of winning the thing.

Murray put everything into that last break. If he hadn't got that over the line it would have to have gone to the other dude advantage.

Have a great time - wish I was going.  My Mum is going on Wed - mens quarter final day.  I'll be in work instead, with a DAB radio in sneakily on the headphones.  Has to be done.

Thanks, never been before, probably the closest ill get to a woman grunting near me so I am quite looking forward to the experience as well as a nice sunburn and heat stroke! :D

One sided all the way except from a little bit at the start of the 2nd. For the most part Ferrero had no answer when Murray stepped up a gear. Good that he got it done in 3 as after his 5 set match the other day he's got a bit more rest on his side. I fancy him to get to the final now.

Title: Re: The Tennis
Post by: michael on Friday, July 3, 2009, 18:20:06
As I have always said, the US Open represents Murray's best chance of winning a major, for several reasons, firstly it is his best surface (he is second only to Federer on hard courts and the Fed won't be around forever) and also because the similarly aged Nadal can't play it so well. Also, Rafa's knees are not going to get any better and that is the least forgiving surface.

He did alright to get to the semi final but going through life and death 5 setter with that big hitting nobody indicated that he'd struggle against anyone with a big game.

Shame he went out, but on the bright side I just got my Sunday afternoon back.

Sounded like an epic match. Fair play to Roddick. You have to give him a lot of credit. No one expected him to go all the way and he's managed to run Federer very close. Federer now has that amazing record. I reckon it might not be too long before we seem him hang up his racket. I'd say another year or 2 because let's face it he's won everything there is to win now.

Great final tonight.  Not quite as entertaining as last year's in terms of long rallies, but an amazing fight put up from Roddick.  If he'd put away the second set tie break it could have been different.  Hats of to Federer, you just can't argue with his achievements.

Shame for Roddick though, seems like a likeable fella as well.  Hope he bounces back well.

Twas a shame for Murray, but to lose to Roddick on that kind of form is hardly "hang your head" stuff.

I can't wait for Sunday morning.  Obviously Federer is the favourite but Murray has done well againt him in the past and I think he has a chance.  If he did win it would be one of the biggest moments in British sport in a long time.

Title: Re: The Tennis
Post by: jonny72 on Friday, January 29, 2010, 21:32:41
Whilst Murray can come across as a twat at times, at least he's not a complete and utter cunt like Federer. There is an interview with him on the BBC website in which he explains why Murray is going to lose;

- He lost his 1st slam final
- He's playing me
- The head to head means nothing as I played badly in the matches I lost
- A British player hasn't won a slam in 150,000 years

I reckon Federer is trying the mind games as he knows he's going to lose on current form, and he's scared.

I actually preferred the Canadian out of the 3. I think there may be question marks over how old his wife was when he started podging her but Henman was a Scummer and Murray really is unlikeable. As well as being a Jock I hold a grudge from when he got knocked out in the 1st round of the Olympics but in the tournaments before and after he did well. He wasn't proud to represent Britan then so fuck him. Allied to his previuos comments about the English then fuck him again.

Federer is definitely playing mind games, he is trying to put a lot of pressure on Murray. I don't think it will work though but Federer is still favourite because his record is better than anyone. I would love to see Murray beat him though, I might even get up to watch the final which would be incredibly early for me on a Sunday.

I got 6/4 with Stanners, 11/8 now, but there's never much variation in 2 man events... I'd take 6/4 if you can find it

Whilst Murray can come across as a twat at times, at least he's not a complete and utter cunt like Federer. There is an interview with him on the BBC website in which he explains why Murray is going to lose;

- He lost his 1st slam final
- He's playing me
- The head to head means nothing as I played badly in the matches I lost
- A British player hasn't won a slam in 150,000 years

I reckon Federer is trying the mind games as he knows he's going to lose on current form, and he's scared.
federer is playing mind games but he can play them in a classy way

fed is the best player ever and i bet any of us  would be a lot more arrogant

c'mon the scot/brit/englishman or the decent bloke with the best backhand in the game (aesthetics equivalent to jp spraying a cross-field ball, or damien martyn playing a cover drive) other than henin. go murray

What time did the match start?

Don't think Murray is going to win but obviously hope he does.

I thought if Murray won the first set he may have had a chance - now I can't see it happening.

Definitely - he looks a better player on Federer's serve than his own.

Federer has really stepped it up in the second set, noone could match him playing like this.

looking petty routine for Fed isn't it. Murray is clearly trying but Fed just steps it up when he needs to and is too good. To be fair I don't think there is a player in the world that can live with Fed on this form.

I don't think Murray has played all that well. First set he could have won if he'd have served better. Second set he missed some good chances and played some poor shots. Now he's blown a chance in the 3rd.

I thought Murray did well in patches, needs to attack a bit more when he gets a chance.  Noone would have beaten Federer on that form though, he is almost perfect.

I thought Murray played pretty well but no-one can beat Federer when he's playing like that. It won't be too long before he wins a major though, even Federer has to have a bad match occasionally.
