i have to agree with you herhab regarding class and tennis.at least playing it anyway.they had a fella at my daughters school a couple of years ago doing tennis lessons.a few of the kids were then invited to the delta tennis centre for a free group lesson.at the end of it they handed out details of lessons,and frankly the prices were disgusting.we diidn't follow it up.and that is why working class kids wont get on in tennis in this country

Its amazing how one call can lose you a match. If Robson had challenged that service out call in the game that lost her the 2nd set it could have turned out differently, probably would have as she seemed to lose the plot after that.

I think Murray should get to the semis if he stays on top of his game, and will probably meet Roddick.  That would be a real challenge, especially if Roddick continues to improve and gets close to where he was a few years back.  The variety in Murray's game and his returning may be enough to cope with Roddick's massive serve, but it would be a difficult one.

How Murray stirs up bad feeling is beyond me.  "Scotsman in not supporting England shock".  I just think he is the best British tennis player in 50 years - and therefore gets my wholehearted support.  Not a robot or one trick pony either - a really entertaining player.

That's a quite ridiculous post. Firstly, Murray isn't 'getting the backing Henman got', because he's absolutely coasting through his matches, whereas a certain Tim Henman struggled nearly all the time.  And it's quite ridiculous you can't let go about Murray's previous comments towards England. It's brilliant that we have a great British player who is honest and actually has a bit of a bloody personality. It's quite clear you're in a huge minority that refuse to support him, because you only have to look at the huge crowds he's been drawing in a Wimbledon. People were actually being turned away from the queues Saturday. People don't have a problem with him being patriotic towards Scotland, because they realise what a fantastic player he is, and he's got more of a chance of winning Wimbledon at 22 years old than Henman had throughout his career.
Not only that, but look at the hours and hours of work he's put in in training. The difference between his physique, serve, and all-round play from last year to today is surreal. The English have huge respect for the work he's put in to get where he is today, it's a shame a small minority won't do the same. And one more thing, did you see him on Saturday, in the final set where he was clearly going to win. He was STILL running to almost impossible shots, shouting at himself when making errors. We haven't had a more committed British player in god knows how long.

I think it's a bit silly to put the whole national team thing on individual sports. It's not like team sports where they're representing their country, tennis players primarily representing themselves. That's one of the things which made me hate Henman so much and just generally get fed up of tennis, the whole transformation into a (even more) middle class football. "Come on Tim". Fuck off.

Last years final was the best tennis match I have ever seen - been watching since early 90s.  Tonight's was enhanced by the roof/lights, the late finish and the Brit who can play tennis at the highest level.

I didn't see that though so it doesn't count. This one had all the elements of a classic, 5 sets, a comeback, British winner and no idea who was going to win right to the end and the first full match under the roof. Superb.

That was an awesome match. Come back and find the thread's 5 pages on which says a lot really.

By the end I wasn't bothered if the wiswiwiwizak dude won. He put a hell of a lot into that. Might have been a bit of a waste though, Murray's clearly got a better chance of winning the thing.

As I have always said, the US Open represents Murray's best chance of winning a major, for several reasons, firstly it is his best surface (he is second only to Federer on hard courts and the Fed won't be around forever) and also because the similarly aged Nadal can't play it so well. Also, Rafa's knees are not going to get any better and that is the least forgiving surface.

He did alright to get to the semi final but going through life and death 5 setter with that big hitting nobody indicated that he'd struggle against anyone with a big game.

Shame he went out, but on the bright side I just got my Sunday afternoon back.

Great final tonight.  Not quite as entertaining as last year's in terms of long rallies, but an amazing fight put up from Roddick.  If he'd put away the second set tie break it could have been different.  Hats of to Federer, you just can't argue with his achievements. 

Shame for Roddick though, seems like a likeable fella as well.  Hope he bounces back well.

I agree with all of that. Have to hand it to Roddick, he beat Hewitt and Murray to reach the final and ran an incredible player very close for the title.

A bit sad I know, but having watched the entire match I just watched the highlights as well. 

Roddick is surely one of the best players of the modern era not to win Wimbledon.

I can't wait for Sunday morning.  Obviously Federer is the favourite but Murray has done well againt him in the past and I think he has a chance.  If he did win it would be one of the biggest moments in British sport in a long time.

Whilst Murray can come across as a twat at times, at least he's not a complete and utter cunt like Federer. There is an interview with him on the BBC website in which he explains why Murray is going to lose;

- He lost his 1st slam final
- He's playing me
- The head to head means nothing as I played badly in the matches I lost
- A British player hasn't won a slam in 150,000 years

I reckon Federer is trying the mind games as he knows he's going to lose on current form, and he's scared.

Murray is a lot tougher prospect than when he played Fed in the US Open, and Fed knows it.

I actually preferred the Canadian out of the 3. I think there may be question marks over how old his wife was when he started podging her but Henman was a Scummer and Murray really is unlikeable. As well as being a Jock I hold a grudge from when he got knocked out in the 1st round of the Olympics but in the tournaments before and after he did well. He wasn't proud to represent Britan then so fuck him. Allied to his previuos comments about the English then fuck him again.

I think Murray had a few 5 set games in that one as well. Just the one set dropped here and he didn't play the warm up tournament either so he's still pretty fresh.

Federer is definitely playing mind games, he is trying to put a lot of pressure on Murray. I don't think it will work though but Federer is still favourite because his record is better than anyone. I would love to see Murray beat him though, I might even get up to watch the final which would be incredibly early for me on a Sunday.

I don't think Murray has played all that well. First set he could have won if he'd have served better. Second set he missed some good chances and played some poor shots. Now he's blown a chance in the 3rd.
