Title: My word for today is..... Post by: BANGKOK RED on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, 19:25:24 Zeitgeist.....
A great word and an impressive word because it can sum up so many different variables and stuff in 2 (or 3) syllables. I also cannot figure out of it is 2 or 3 syllables, does 'tg' count as a syllable? Surely not but then surely 'geist' is too long for one syllable. Fuck it, either way it is a good word. Considering that you are a bit of a fan of the word zeitgeist, answer me this: How many facking syllables does it have? Title: Re: My word for today is..... Post by: BANGKOK RED on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, 19:59:34 And the first person to say the the word "it" has one syllable gets a cyber chelsea smile.
Title: Re: My word for today is..... Post by: Nemo on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, 20:00:47 Two?
Zite-Guyst Title: Re: My word for today is..... Post by: flammableBen on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, 20:03:38 I'd go with two. One for "Zeit" and one for "geist".
Title: Re: My word for today is..... Post by: BANGKOK RED on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, 20:08:38 Wait up.
Apparently the word Zeitgeist is a sesquipedalian word, meaning 'many syllables' or something like that. The answer might be 2 1/2 syllables or something. I am liking this word zeitgeist even more now. Title: Re: My word for today is..... Post by: flammableBen on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, 20:15:51 nah, it's definitely two.
Title: Re: My word for today is..... Post by: BANGKOK RED on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, 20:25:39 Maybe I have drunk to much or something but the syllables don't seem to add up to me. I'll think about it again tomorrow.
Either way...... Zeitgeist. Good word that innit? Title: Re: My word for today is..... Post by: leefer on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, 20:29:24 Zeit-ge-est......3 syllables.
Title: Re: My word for today is..... Post by: michael on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, 20:32:09 It is two.
I have a nagging suspicion that you are saying it wrong. This would explain your confusion. Why don't you write it down, phonetically, on here, so the Swindon Town faithful can judge. Title: Re: My word for today is..... Post by: flammableBen on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, 20:36:52 if it's 3 you are saying it wrong.
zeit is 1. like kite or reit. Geist is also 1, a bit like friend or heist. There's no need to make a third syllable from the two consecutive hard consonant sounds of t,g. Of course I could be wrong. And I'm sure you can get into some crazy advanced meta language shit where it can be broken down into 5 depending on the type of syllable you're talkaing about. Standard normal syllables though it's two. Title: Re: My word for today is..... Post by: leefer on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, 20:45:47 http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/zeitgeist
Title: Re: My word for today is..... Post by: Reg Smeeton on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, 21:20:48 Well it's a German word, so may be pronounced somewhat differently in the loathsome, guttural, Teutonic accent.
Title: Re: My word for today is..... Post by: flammableBen on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, 21:21:48 Anyway back on subject. I'm still in love with adumbrate.
