Didn't we sell circa 1000 before the Rovers game, and then 3000 in the following 3 days?

I thought the 3000 included the 1000 before the Rovers game?

Actually I don't know anything I'm just trying to confuse things.

Well when I went down there on Friday I was told that they were doing about 600 a day that week and reckoned we had done "about 3,500" by then.

I would warrant that with the deadline being extended to Tuesday then we will have done a few more since.

Have not renewed mine yet (seeking advice from Bushey!!), phone went at 6-45 pm last night and discovered it was Nick Watkins asking if I was going to renew!!  As it had gone to answerphone by the time I got to the phone I let it run and didn't answer, I will see if he rings back!

I thought they would have had something on the OS but I guess they probably only would if sales were going well as we've heard nothing about it, especially in the press.

Title: Re: number of season tickets sold???
Post by: Batch on Thursday, May 21, 2009, 08:23:56
Actually they had something about it on BBC RS this morning!

Nick W said he and colleagues are taking a couple of hours a day ringing those that did not renew.

But also, BBC RS said we are over 1000 down on this time last year. I am not sure how they did that comparison, I didn't hear the whole piece, but if it is purely date x v date Y then that is disappointing given the early bird discount has long passed and the renew by date is a week or so away.

Recession + Crap season = less STs sold I suppose. But those pay on the day prices are going to hurt the non-renewers that will now pick and chhose. Got to lower them if ST sales fall significantly .

Sold 3600 currently vs 4600/700 Season ticket holders at the end of the season I think was the comparison.

That's not all that bad is it? You would expect that to rise to around 4000 by the start of the season. Which mean only being 600\700 down from the end of the season.

That's quite a healthy figure given the financial climate and crap season, I definitely misheard what they said on the radio.

Title: Re: number of season tickets sold???
Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, May 21, 2009, 09:21:59
Last season they were still selling them off a the cheaper price into August weren't they?

I think we're going to have to accept we'll be quite a bit down on last season, unless they extend the offer again. Don't forget there was the double incentive of a cheap price and a cheaper price if we hit 6k, whereas this time it's all incremental based on the deadlines, which are much earlier.

Now the question: Does the club extend the deadline or stick to their initil dates? If they keep extending these deadlines they become a bit meaningless.

If they keep on extending the deadline, they could well upset those who did stump up early, which will make it even harder to attract early sales next year

I thought we sold 5300 tickets last year, or am I misreading RT's post ?

Yes. He quoted the number of season tickets still valid at the end of last season. I'm guessing that means around 600 people didn't pay the second installment last year.

coming up to 4k under the current circumstances is fantastic, the league we are in, the current financial climate, the general apathetic fans views, the poor performances by the dozen last season.

Overall pretty good methinks.

Yep. Anybody who expected 5,000+ was kidding themselves really. The tickets are more expensive and there's no massive media campaign. Also, we've just come off the back of a crap season and people aren't really sure where we go from here. If we are at 3,500 that's not bad at all, and a few decent signings could easily see that up to 4,000 by the time the opening day rolls around

I think we'll get 4k+ by the end of this month. I can't imagine too many ST sales after that, if you're hanging around for signings you may as well go pay on the day in case we're shit again.

I've always thought increasing the price throughout the summer is a stupid idea. All you need is one price for renewals and one price for everyone else. The fact that it will cost £100 more from the 1st is going to stop people from buying, not because they're £400 but because the price went up. If we sign some decent players or keep Cox there will be a lot of potential season ticket holders who won't buy because of the higher price.

I can't see anyone getting too upset if they extend the deadline, its not like anyone will be losing out. I think most people will just be happy that we've sold more season tickets.

Title: Re: number of season tickets sold???
Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, May 21, 2009, 13:18:22
I think it will have a knock on effect if they keep extending - people will just continue to leave it until we make signings because they know if ST sales aren't as high as they could be, the offer dte will keep getting extended.

As you say though, I wouldn't be fussed if I paid out earlier than someone else, I just wanted the ticket no matter when I got it.

Title: Re: number of season tickets sold???
Post by: Spy on Thursday, May 21, 2009, 13:39:44
I agree with the point of view it doesn't make that much difference to season ticket sales who we sign. Buying a season ticket is such a big decision in terms of paying hundreds of pounds and allocating time every other weekend for months that people aren't gonna be swayed either way unless a really big name was announced or cox signed a new contract.

They're about 900 down from the number of season ticket holders at the end of last season currently and theres quite a few weeks til the start of the season so you would expect them to pick up a few hundred more.

surely comparisons should be made about the numbers of season ticket holders at a start of a season? not one at the start, the other at the end.

Maybe but this season we know none of them will drop out cos it isn't split into 2 payments. Surely someone who paid the first installment and only had a season ticket for the first 10 games (not really a proper season ticket holder then were they?) shouldn't count as much as someone who is a season ticket holder all season.

Yeah, lets do that so then everyone can bitch and moan because we havent sold the same amount as last year.

The people who didnt pay their second installment last season can quite frankly fuck off. They clearly arent proper supports and the way some go on you'd think we'd just had our worst season of all fucking time.

Ok, its probably bad from a financial point of view but i'd rather have less season tickets sold than have some johnny armchair come along because they are cheap, bitch and moan all game and then not bother when we dont win every game 3 fucking 0 playing like Brazil.

Getting on for!!  5200-3568 = 1632.  Not exactly 2000, but getting close.  1632 x average of £300 is close to half a mill down!  Still the Cox sale will put that right!

'getting close' doesn't make a lot of sense though. We can only get further away from 2000 less. Unless people return them on mass or something.

Don't matter if we compare with the beginning or end of the season we have sold 3,600 end off. The question is will we sell more ? I believe we will have a good season next year & I really think DW has what it takes to get us going in the right direction. Couple that with the board we now have & I reckon some will regret not buying an ST.
Bear in mind that two of our most successful managers in the past have had similar starts to their STFC careers as DW (Hoddle & Macari just about kept us up/ had an average start before leading us to glory)

Title: Re: number of season tickets sold???

And if we do have a good season the crowds will come regardless of many ST holders we have. That's the way football works.

True, If we're near the top in Dec a lot may buy half season tickets.

Actually this is another reason why comparing with the end of last season is more valid (If we need to compare with anything. )

you seem angry dv.count to ten or something.
people will bitch and moan regardless of anything anyway.
and it has always been obvious we wont shift as many season tickets this summer.hopefully it will make the club more money, as good form will see people paying more for a ticket on the day of a match.

Don't think my son has bothered renewing (Even though I gave him a ton towards it and he said he was going to).

I think a combination of alcohol and women have become more appealing to him than spending his (and my, come to that!) money on watching Swindon Town.

The youth of today. I just don't fucking understand the twats.......

So what you're saying is my son has taken my 100 quid and shoved it up his nose? The ungrateful bastard! He never even offered me any!

Personally I don't think we will hit 4,600 given the fact season tickets are now full price. If we did hit that I think the board would be well happy with it and so would I.

IF cox were to stay I think we would hit 4,600.

See, I really don't think they're going to sign anyone that will persuade people who haven't already paid up to get one.

I suppose if there was a definitve statement that Cox was staying that might have an effect, but I doubt it.

4000 is a really good effort though.

I'm with neville - the vast majority of people who are going to buy a ST will already have done so, very few buty at full price. But 4000 is still bloody good - we used to average 2500-3000.

If anyone can afford it this is now the most cost effective way now, over 3 or more years at £250 per season.

Or really expensive for 1 season of 1st Division football if the club go bust in the next 12 months.

Anyone know what happens to all the money from season ticket sales? Does it just go in to the black hole that is the club's current account, or does it get ring fenced and then paid to the club in instalments over the course of the season?

Title: Re: number of season tickets sold???
Post by: Phil_S on Thursday, June 11, 2009, 15:09:20
I would imagine it all goes to the club to help the cashflow. Don't forget we now have new owners & are probably mosre finacially stable than a lot of clubs. eg Liverpool, Southampton, Newcastle

Title: Re: number of season tickets sold???
Post by: pauld on Thursday, June 11, 2009, 15:12:01
It used to be that if you paid by credit card, the credit card companies would hand over the money one month at a time. However, that was a special arrangement imposed by the cc companies at the time as we were in such an appalling state financially and they didn't want to be left holding the baby if we went belly up half way through the season. It may well have been lifted now.

But as Phil says, we're not the Swindon Town of two years ago or the Southampton of today. We're not going bust anymore

If you calculate the lost interest on this money (admittedly not a lot at current rates) then on average it's probably going to be more like £275 a season, which I'm sure still works out cheaper.

Exactly. Even if we stayed in the same division season tickets prices will still go up quite a lot in 5 years. Even if we went down to League 2 in a few years I don't think the price would be less than £270... well not much less anyway.

I hadn't thought about the credit cards, wouldn't surprise me if it was still in place. Its all about risk for the credit card companies and I'd have thought that a League 1 football club was high risk - when I ran an online shop I had to provide a personal guarantee for chargebacks. Quite possibly something similar in place with the financing company they are using.

Either way, some form of ring fencing would make sense - the club shouldn't be spending the money until they've earned it - or its just asking for trouble.

Title: Re: number of season tickets sold???
Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, June 11, 2009, 20:27:25
If it's cash it'll just go straight to the club bank account.

Monitoring, spending and receiving money will be done through cash flow statements/forecasts and I know the club now has a proper accounts team so they'll know their position.

Football is different when it comes to inflation etc as players wages seem to just keep rising irrespective of what the rest of the economy is doing.

Sooner or later there will be an asset price crash in the high end football market, just as there has been in other spheres of the economy.  In a few years from now, when Ronaldo is still the best footballer in the world and worth £25m, this could look like a pretty smart move by Man United.

Totally agree, it can not be sustainable even at the highest levels of the game. There is talk in the spanish papers this morning that Ronaldo could be on £500,000 a week by the end of his contract as it rises by x% every year of a rumoured 5 year deal.

With Setanta looking like they are going down the pan, that'll leave less competition for Sky. So the amount that the premiersh1t get from TV will probably fall now.
Also a lot of club owners have fewer billions now too.

But thats what we "Signed up" for when we started supporting the Town. If we wanted a team that always did well we'd be talking about ManUre or Chelski & the price of our sky subscription & it'd be pretty boring (IMHO).
To me thats the difference between true football supporters & glory hunters

Why bother buying a season ticket then?  ::)

I really don't understand some people.

For years I refused to get a season ticket, or go to many games, due to the ridiculous pricing. All that time I said if they ever got realistic with the prices I'd be first in line to get a season ticket. So they kind of called my bluff by reducing the season ticket to under £12 a game, forcing my hand. Bastards.

Bizarrely, I also get a kick out of watching them play shit as it gives me something to moan about. Besides, can anyone honestly say they go to games due to the high quality of football that we get or to see them win?

Are they available to collect yet?  Im assuming yes?
Collected mine today, he did say they were asking fans to wait until Monday so that they could deal with all the ones to be sent out by post first.  There is still a big pile of them waiting for posting so don't panic if you haven't got yours yet!

I thought it was the second tier of pricing? So Gazza's would be £299?

But not as chuffed as you were originally? You've gone from being £80 better off to £50 better off in the space of a few posts. At what point would you cease being well chuffed and be merely chuffed? Would there be a point where you started to be a bit miffed and what would need to happen for you to be well  miffed?

See Pullen, I told you so. Look what you've started.

You give these posties any excuse and they'll run with it!

Run? When have you ever seen a postman run? Saunter (not ben) is what i'd liken it to! Its a lot more difficult to feel the post for money when you're running. You learn that in Postman 101.

You didn't tick it for the sake of £1? Surely it'll cost you more than that to drive into Swindon to collect it!

I thought I heard Wednesday on RS, but was half asleep at the time!  Advise everybody to check with the box office so they get the right day, that includes Gazza!

Cheers! Makes sense the 29th as its just after pay day so may entice a few more people to re-new, plus the fixtures coming out gets people excited etc.
