Title: Swindon V Bristol Rovers Matchday Thread.
Post by: herthab on Saturday, April 25, 2009, 04:13:04
Soooo, yet another 'Biggest Game Of The Season' and hopefully the last (Which'll mean we either win, or Carlisle lose, or both)

Wouldn't be surprised if it was a draw.

Nervous. Very nervous.

Tell me about it.  I've voided my bowels three times already this morning.

I've been cursing this early kick off all week, but now it's the big I'm actually quite pleased I've got three hours less to wait.

A little tip I learnt this week; if you get that nervous fluttery feeling in your stomach, just clench your buttocks and it goes away.

This early kick off has messed with my plans all week.

I haven't enjoyed the build up at all because of it.

For this reason I am happy that we are no longer among the Premiership elite.

I can't say I like the early kick off much either but I guess it's probably a good idea as both sides have there fair share of idiots. Having said that I think some fans only go to the game to cause trouble and I doubt an early kick off will stop them.

Good result for you guys up at Stockport last night. I must admit I had that down as a 0-0 so it shows how much I know.

I have a feeling Cheltenham will do you a favour today but because of the early kick off you wont know that until after our game is over which will no doubt add to the nerves.

I hope you stay up because Swindon is slightly closer than Carlisle for an away day next season.

My monies on a high scoring draw because both sides score plenty of goals but let in too many at the other end.

I don't really understand how you can want us to stay up, if the roles were reversed I'd love the opportunity to relegate your lot, I think it might be a highlight of the season.

To be honest I never really look at Swindon as a real derby. It's just a nice local away game where I don't have to spend half the day on the road.

These days any ground within 100 miles seems to be considered a derby. Whether it's Swindon, Cheltenham, Cardiff, Yeovil, Exeter or even Plymouth the press seem to build it up as a derby game.

For me the only real derby is Bristol City and the wins we've had over them are certainly highlights of my time supporting Rovers.

I guess as you are the only team in Swindon it's slightly different for you so I can understand why you'd take pleasure in sending us down.

Just as a matter of interest who do you consider your main rivals? Oxford?

Title: Re: Swindon V Bristol Rovers Matchday Thread.
Post by: axs on Saturday, April 25, 2009, 08:02:14
Very much Oxford.

You're right about us not really being a derby, but you are Bristol and we are Swindon so there is something there, especially after our recent encounters.

Title: Re: Swindon V Bristol Rovers Matchday Thread.
Post by: Samdy Gray on Saturday, April 25, 2009, 08:02:25
Oxford. No one else.

City, Cheltenham, Brighton and Gillingham could be considered slight irritants along with yourselves but I wouldn't go as far as calling them rivals.

Title: Re: Swindon V Bristol Rovers Matchday Thread.
Post by: axs on Saturday, April 25, 2009, 08:03:17
And judging by posts on here from some of your fellow supporters they are very much relishing the opportunity of easing us into League 2.

Traditionally - yes, Oxford.  But my own view (which some others will disagree with quite strongly) is that the longer Oxford stay in the Non-League, the less relevant the 'rivalry' becomes.  There is already a fair slice of our support that is too young to remember games against them.

That said, the section of our fan base that lives west of Swindon probably cares more about games vs the two Bristol clubs.  I've never really 'hated' Rovers or City, but have always enjoyed wins against them.  And if I'm being brutally honest...narrowly avoiding having my head caved in by a pack of baseball bat wielding chavs at the Inn on the Green two years ago means I'm (hopefully) going to enjoy this win all the more today as well.

Title: Re: Swindon V Bristol Rovers Matchday Thread.
Post by: GasAttacK on Saturday, April 25, 2009, 08:10:05
Like you Samdy, I have a particular dislike for Gillingham. I would much rather they stayed down than you guys go down.

I also think those Rovers fans hoping to dump you into league 2 are going to be disappointed. Even if we win - which I doubt - I think Cheltenham will take something off Carlisle.

Like most clubs we have some fans we could do without and I'm sorry to hear about the incident at the Inn. I can understand you'd take particular pleasure in beating us after that.

I'm off to get ready for the game now so I guess I'll see you guys there.

Glad to hear it's meant to stay dry as getting soaked was my main concern today because we have nothing left to play for except pride. I would however like to stay dry and watch a Rovers win but that might be asking for too much; all will be revealed very soon.

Its in our own hands from 1200. Win, we're good. Fail to win, we're back to nervously looking over our shoulders at others.

Aside from the fact I'd love to beat the gasheads (I work with two, so I have a vested interest in this particular result), it would be nice to win a 'local' (ish) derby at home.

Is Swindon really as poor as results suggest.

I'll caveat my comments slightly as I'm listening to Rovers biased commentary. We started well, scored early, had some other half chances. The Rovers scored against the run of play - utter fluke - and they were on top for the next 15/20 mins. We came back into the game towards the break. So pretty even.

sonic is suggesting that the Swindon commentary is quite positive.

So make of that what you will.......

And off we go again.....

I think his time is up here. He hasn't really improved as a defender, or an all-round player. If (and its a big if) we can get Greer permanently, and with Morrison's potential, Ifil will be bit-part at best. Hopefully that may spell the end for Aljofree too.

I think his time is up here. He hasn't really improved as a defender, or an all-round player. If (and its a big if) we can get Greer permanently, and with Morrison's potential, Ifil will be bit-part at best. Hopefully that may spell the end for Aljofree too.

there was an artical on the town site the other day about greer. i don't know how many people read it but the tone taken was that his time is up for this season, not that his time is up for good. i recon theres something in the pipeline, which is always good. good defender, good captain.

Just got back. Great win. Shit game really. I didn't expect much from Rovers but I perhaps expected more from us. We started the better side easily and we got a stroke of luck for the 1st when Phillips clashed with their defender to leave an open goal. But if you thought that was lucky I don't even know how they got their goal. It was probably the biggest fluke i've seen this season. Bounced off their player who was in the way of the shot and just trickled over the line. Just our luck.

We did the job in the second half though! We just needed a goal as i felt it was a 1 goal win for either side. Thankfully it can late on so Rovers had no time to really come at us. We defended well and Greer, Ifil and Cox were all superb today. Job done and well done Coxy. 30 goals in a poor side is an achievement of some note. He'll be off soon and I wish him the best of luck.

First game i've been to in ages.  Thought Bristol Rovers were a far better outfit overall and we were lucky to win the game.

They kept the ball on the floor and tried to pass, whilst Swindon get hoofing the ball upfront.

Ifil had a poor game and looks very hesitant when in possession of the ball.

Cox looks a class apart as he makes space and was always available for a pass. I thought Greer and Vincent had good games however.

Overall theres lots to improve on, but evberyone knows that, so hopefully Wilson will rebuild over the summer so we can have a better season next season

Title: Re: Swindon V Bristol Rovers Matchday Thread.
Post by: Batch on Saturday, April 25, 2009, 16:19:35
I thought we were worth the win. Rovers broke with pace but created little. We did create chances. Paynter was MOM and Cox was up for it.

Ifil started off useless but came into the game well. Kept the pigmy quiet. Vincent off form and Greer was good. Phil smith did nothing worng. Amankwha is still hit and miss. The fluffed cross from him landing at Cox feet.

Not bothered if we never see HRK ever again. JPM showed more vision and movement when he came on. OTJ was not great and Easton looked like a man who hasn't played for ages. McNamee was largely anonymous.

but, most importantly THE REDS ARE STAYING UP! Bring on the Saints, Charlton and Brentford away.

Thought Bristol Rovers were a far better outfit overall and we were lucky to win the game.

Disagree.  Bit of a scrappy game with the injury taking the momentum out of the first half.  We scored two and gifted Rovers one which made me think we weren't really lucky to win.

I thought Ifil was shakey at times but actually defended well for most of the game - better than of late.

Just my opinion though as everyone sees things differently.

Title: Re: Swindon V Bristol Rovers Matchday Thread.
Post by: DiV on Saturday, April 25, 2009, 16:33:56
Rovers didnt trouble us really.

Their goal came from pure fluke and other than that they had one shot with Phil Smith saved excellently - other than that - they broke well but had nothing in the final 3rd.

Ifil was Ifil - moments of top quality defending, moments of awful football. Just to point it out, it was his 'aimless hoof forward' that lead to our first goal. The defence distribtuion as a whole was off today.

I would perfer Amankwaah on the right wing, that cross to Cox feet wasnt fluffed was it? it was a decent cross and took a deflection. He looked more dangerous going forward than McNamee or HRK did all game. Got more crosses in.

HRK as mentioned before, good signing, showed some real quality - not today mind you he was rubbish. Taking him off for JPM made us better. McNamee wasnt much better.

Easton was well off the pace as was OTJ but again like HRK his loan spell has been more good than bad.

Paynter was excellent and clattered Phillips. Cox was Cox - 10000000000 times the player Lambert is.

JPM looked good when he came on and improved us. Jack Smith wasnt on long.

Oh and Kanyuka played and got injured with his first touch - I guess thats his Swindon career done?

Now we are safe Wilson should be on the phone to Greer right now begging him to sign.

Ref I thought was very poor. Every time a Rovers player hit the deck he got a free kick - even when there was no one within 5 yards of him!!!!!

For them Kuffor looked tidy and worried me slightly every time he got the ball into his feet and the Rovers reserve keeper gets the award for the second best name in L1 Denzelle St. Louis-Hamilton. Bettered only by Stockports Paul Ennis.

Well im home after doing a bit of shopping after the match....

What a relief......i thought my heart was going to burst out of my chest with five minutes to go!!

Scrappy old game but i did think we were fortunate not to be a goal adrift at halftime....saw Coxys first right up close as i was off for a piss and was stood just behind the goal..Get in... :D

Easton was throwing himself around for the cause but i do question just exactly who was really up for it. ::)

Kayak was shite...he couldnt run, tackle, pass or worst of all ,cross....it was shocking.....he must be laughing with a 2 year contract at Reading???? >:(

Vincent was woeful and Ifil just cannot learn and im afraid this maybe the last time i see him in a town shirt.

Greer..steady eddie.

Tudor Jones....Jury have decided to stay another night in the hotel before reaching a verdict.

Jacko...too late to see him do anything but for player who should of been gone he has played well enough this season.

Cox thanks alot and goodbye.....this guys goals have been the difference between us and oblivion this season and i will always be grateful.....Championship for him but i think the Prem maybe a step too far.

Smith.....has improved since his comeback and pulled off a great save and his kicking has improved.

Amankawankmah......hope to see more of him and prefer him in midfield.

JP...played well and made the second goal.

McNamee...missing

Paynter....played a blinder IMO and really battled for every ball. I hope he gets a good foil next year.

Kanyuka...oh dear...poor comeback match!

------------------------------------

Pook - Gone

Marshall - i might be turned..

Timlin...hot and cold...i dunno.

Brez....could be gone

THE SEASON

Malpas.......what a nightmare....for me and my memories only McMoan was worse and he did win something whilst he as here!

Brighton away in Jpt will haunt me forever as top 3 shittest games ever witnessed.

Too much shocking defending (Rovers goal a classic example of the usual shitness).

Highlights include a few new grounds, Coxys goals, beating those Franchise cunts on their own dungheap!
Northampton was a good night too.

In all i am glad to see the back of this season and i look forward to see what Dannyboy can do during the summer!

Not off to Pboro as i waited to see if we needed anything from the game before getting tickets - enjoy!

That was foooking ace today.....

I apologise to all those who sit around me in the Don Rogers. cos I was constantly saying 'fucking hell, fucking hell, fucking hell' everytime Rovers attacked...

I was very emotionally strung and wound up like clock. In fact when Cox scored the winner I almost allowed some wee to come out.

JPM changed the game for me, he looked so up for it when he came on, he showed spirit, endeavour and heart, in fact everything Robson-Kantdo was missing.

Get shopping Danny!

Just back, thank Christ for that (or Allah or Buddah etc I don't care!).

Great to do the Gas who played a bit part today. Always felt a threat due to the circumstances we were in but never really put us under the cosh. Lambert was FAT and therefore hard to push off the ball but I laughed my tits off when his one decent chance was fluffed. Nice to see Phillips take one of his own out and ended up giving us a goal to boot.

Rovers fans were poor (maybe cos they had bugger all to play for) but made a mockery of the media classing this as a derby. Sorry but not anywhere close for me as they fell a long way short. Sadly the Scum are at least a few seasons away from us but there you go.

Thanks Coxy for what you've done for us this season. Couldn't beleive that a Town fan in front of me was still slagging him off as being a waster. A 30 goal a season waster !!!!! If you recognise who you are then fucking shame on you (as I told you at the time).

Big changes needed for next season if we have aspirations to get much higher next season but I'll wallow in my drunken stupa for now happy in the knowledge that WE ARE STAYING UP !!!!!!!!!!! Fuckin smileys included !

 :) :D ;D 8) :bye:  :soapy tit wank:

my take on today...
we started brightly and played some nice build up football(until ifil had it and it went pete tong)and deserved to go 1 up.we dominated it for a good period of that first half, and those bumkin cunts were lucky to get their goal.
i thought ten pole tudor was superb first half(first time ive seen him play)puts his foot in and doesn't waste passes.
as was paynter (the unsung hero)
great save by smith too.was pretty happy at half time as we were doing ok.
second half was rubbish imo.crap football all round really but we scored so hey ho.cox should have had a hatrick really.thought jpm was quality when he came on.
things that were concerning if i look for negatives.
ifil(poor distibution as usual, and lucky not to have his mistakes when letting kuffor or lambert get in unchallenged puinished.)man of the match?!?!? fucking have a word.shocking!get rid.
macnamee(headless chicken who is a luxury player and should have been subbed instead of kanu.dire dead ball deliveries today from him,1 good cross with his right foot, nothing else)
easton(didn't happen for him at all today)shame
the crowd(had better atmosphere with half that gate)
now we are safe i hope for a mass clear out in the summer.was notible that the loanees are all better than the registered lads(apart from cox-paynter)

Vincent and kanu forgot they were footballers today but our central defence and strikers were up for it and it won us the game. Happy days
Greer and Ifil were poor for me today, Vincent looked slow but was honest in his performance.
Paynter was MoM for miles, what a great touch he showed today.
Cox could have had five, and Sonic is right it looked the wave of farewell, waited for all the other players to stop applauding the DRS before he made his last gesture.
Kanu was a total disgrace ... good bloody riddance.

Not a great game .... numerous examples of the lack of class & respect from our chav scum neighbours 1) their reserve players continuing to play around the band in the warmup 2) we clapped byron anthony off with his injury - none of them showed the same respect for kanukya.
Good to see the burberry brand is alive & well amongst their teenage inbred mob on the stratton bank

Kuffour has well over 280 appearances in the bottom 2 tiers with Torquay, Brentford and Bournemouth (including his 11 with us under Roy Evans (?)) but everytime I've seen him he's been nothing more than decent at best. He worked quite well with Leon Constantine and Ade Akinfenwa when we couldn't beat them in 2004/05 though.

I feel better already. Relieved. This season has been a strain. When I look back I think of Cheltenham away (players strutting around on the pitch after a defeat to a team that were clearly the worst in the league). And I'll think of Histon because that proved that we were a shit cup team as well as a shit league team.

Weve had major problems with the motivation of our players. Some of Sturrocks old guard showed us who they were really playing for last season. Fans also very unmotivated and quiet.

Yesterday was a typical example. Just not as good as it should have been. Play was sloppy, sometimes a bit lazy. South stand was very quiet. No roar behind the team at all.

Well done Coxy, possibly the league's best player?

Looking forward to a more normal season next season? Season ticket sales will fall. Some of the people who got them just because they were cheap wont be there. Too many fans in the south stand who would rather have been somewhere else. If they dont play well next season then the fans wont come, simple as that. Keeps the pressure on players who didnt look to have a care in the world at times this season. Ive got every faith that Wilson can sort the club out. Greer would be a great start. Wilson will do what he thinks is best, not a puppet of the board like Malpas was.

Agree with that I thought we sang quite a lot down that side yesterday.

You can definitely hear pockets of fans in the South Stand, just that the rest of the people won't join in :(

I was in the Arkells..abit of singing..could hear both ends of the DRS singing at different times and of course the Town End.....of course when your away all these pockets have to sit together hence the better atmosphere.....must say though was nice to see a near full DRS it looks good sitting opposite in the Arkells....though i did wince abit when the Town End started singing Let him Die, Let him Die to the Rovers player after the early collision........as i was sat close to the soldiers who were helping the Heroes activities!....good atmosphere yesterday though and i for one would love to see it like that every week and of course in the Championship it would be.

Some people have said it was a crap game yesterday, but I think the lads did what was needed. It was a game we had to win in any way possible, and we went out there battling for the ball, finally looking like our survival depended on it. The football wasn't top quality but we created more than Rovers.

Smithy had a great game in goal, and you have to give credit to the defence too. They made mistakes, but Kuffour looked dangerous all afternoon and Lambert has a great goalscoring record, yet neither was given chances without having to work hard for them. Ifil had a very dodgy start but defended very well in my opinion, and that last ditch tackle in the second half was very important.

As for the midfield, the lads in the middle battled well. McNamee was so-so, getting at defenders at times but fristrating us all at others, whilst HRK looked quite disinterested, and at times a bit lazy. Thinking back to the incident where he didn't go and get the ball back against Orient, you have to question how much he cared about winning games. JPM came on and looked lively, no complaints there.

Cox had a decent game, even if he did spend too much time on the floor. He was in the right place for both goals and you can't really argue with a brace. Paynter was on top form, getting at the defence from the off. He deserves a lot more credit than some give him, and was my MOTM yesterday.

Posh away should be a cracking day out. I'm also really glad I don't have to worry about an unlikely Swindon win gifting Franchise 2nd spot!

I forgot all about that!

Mind you, considering I haven't got a clue what you look like, it was a tad difficult to pick your face out in the crowd! :D

I'm probably not a boro, so it will have to transfer to next season.  I am getting my ST this week so I'll be in the same place next season.

Next time wear a hat with Dell Boy written on it! ;)

In fairness, none of them sang "let him die" when Kanyuka came off, and they did give the kids at half time (and the band) a good reception.

Just watched the highlights of the Rovers game on STFC World this morning, and on reflection, did Billy Paynter actually foul the goalie for Cox's first goal?

He does seem to go in with his arm raised and 'look' for the keeper...

I dont really give a fuck whether he did or not, Phillips deserved his pain for being a total wanker plus I think its rather pleasing that it couldve been a foul and we got away with it.

Anyone else got a view?

i'm happy with the decision

no one appealed for anything, which is surprising considering Phillips nature

I thought the same thing (about Phillips). Seems they wanted him to come off, so fair play to him for wanting to stay on. Still a cunt though.
