Title: As it stands
Post by: Bob's Orange on Monday, April 20, 2009, 10:31:10
Not really been paying much attention to the Championship and League 2 but in the relegation spots in the Championship are Charlton (already down), Southampton and Norwich who will all have decent away followings next season and provide locality.

In League 2 the top 3 spots are Brentford, Exeter and Wycombe and noticed as well that Gillingham are handily placed in the play-offs so again would provide a bit of localness.

Norwich is a lot further away than many appreciate.  I think it's something to do with the fact a lot of people think of East Anglia of being more 'South' than 'North' even though Norwich itself is further north than Birmingham.

Equally irrelevant but just as interesting (if you're bored) is the startling find that Edinburgh is further west than Liverpool.

Ok, I didn't actually realise that Norwich was that far away but it has to be closer than Barnsley?

I've done the journey to Norfolk a couple of times. It's not too bad on the train actually, driving is simple enough but long and boring.

I know some Norwich fans and apparently only Ipswich have completely sold out their away end this season (3,000).. That gives an indication of how isolated they are geographically

Norwich isn't even that easy to get to on the train, about 2.5 hours from London with either 1 or 2 changes. Pretty cheap though atleast.

Norwich is 2 hours by train from Liverpool St, direct.

You can drive there in no less than 3 hours from here (Oxford), proabably more like 4 as I used to always do it at night when the roads were clear.

It's fine until you get to Cambridge and complacency slips in, "oh we must be nearly there now", when in reality there's another hour and a half of single carriageway to go, with completely flat views.

Great ground is Carrow road though, and an excellent away day if it's even only slightly sunny.

As has been established Norwich is fucking miles away in East Angular, it's why we're in the West Country.  Without EA, we'd probably be in the east. I recall going there first game of the season around 96/97, holiday weekend...fucking nightmare.

I was looking at this yesterday. There could (theoretically) be 10 away games with striking distance of me next season.

No motorways in Norfolk either..

That said, there are alot of decent dual carriageways. A11 is a good road as is the A14.

It's 3.5 hours on the train from Swindon, if you are a little lucky getting a tube to Liverpool St at the right time. And the ground is right behind the station and by a load of pubs which is good.

Ahh you're right. I checked 2 or 3 different weekends, but they must have all been weekends with engineering work on the tracks etc

I quite fancy Charlton away next year. My mate is renting a place in Woolwich.

Night out in London after the game.

Norwich are averaging 24,000 despite being shit. I'm sure if they get relegated with Southampton and Charlton all 3 will sell out their allocation at the County Ground (if we stay up)

Norwich have already sold 18,000 season tickets for next season, despite them not knowing what division they will be in. One nice touch is that they're going to give a rebate of 10-15% if they do get relegated, would have been good if Swindon had done something similar.

Norwich support is fantastic, they average over 24,000 for a side going down. Same sort of catchment area as Swindon. Great supporters.

True is it fantastic support, but lets face it they don't have major London clubs an hours train journey away like we do.And its in the middle of no where, there is sod all else to do except rear turkeys and keep an eye out for Stephen Fry.And you get Delia Smith pies, its a no brainer, course your going to go to the games   :)

I went to Carrow Road the season we lost 5-0,only thing we won was the half time fan shoot out.Was sat near the depressive fat bloke and Rick Wakeman alike on the way there and back,it was hellish, especially the return journey.

The difference with norwich is that a large proportion of it's population has family connections to the area, they didn't all move there from london in the 70s. And you can't get anywhere easily if you did support another team.

Agree to a point ax....but i used to feel that way about Reading,a new stadium, treat the supporters well and abit of ambition at a club goes along way.

Seen Town at Norwich twice. Once on a Tuesday night in a Cup replay - we won 2-0 - Hammond's only decent game for Town. Alos went there when we lost 3-1 in the Cup and had two players sent off - Gittens and Lorenzo?. its a long way but there are some very good pubs in Wymondham. If you go by train its rigth next to the station.

Nicky Hammond?  You missed the 1-0 home win against Barnsley in 92/93 (Maskel pen from a foul on Summerbee), Hammond was awesome that day.

I was there. I just didn't rate Hammond. He was useless at crosses and dodn't command his area. Whilst he was a good shot stopper he had this habit of putting the ball back into play instead of turning it around the post. This was good for strikers as they were facing the right way.
Its a shame as he was a decent geezer.

Seems to be making a very good career in the boardroom at Reading as well.  Fair play.  My abiding memory of him, I am sad to say, is that bloody awful clearance at Peterboro when we were 3-2 up which let Adcock score the equaliser.
