Title: not quite sure what i'm talking about but fancied a mumble
Post by: Whits on Monday, May 23, 2005, 20:05:24
Why i like being a lower league fan  8)

1.One season your great one season your crap, your really never sure what your going to get, whether it be that great 4-3 victory at Wembley to getting stuffed week in week out in the premiership, getting 2 straight relegations only to be go up as champions the next season. Over the past few seasons we’ve had the chance of going up via the play offs and almost got sent down to league 2 obscurity if it hadn’t been for Danny. To be honest can any Premiership fan go through what we go through year after year, somehow I don’t think they can quite understand (largely due to large financial backing)

2.You never know how much longer you have left, I’m being horribly honest but I can’t see Swindon lasting much after next season. With the CVA Payment coming up fairly soon and no obvious way out without some rich billionaire leaving us in his will (yes the ground maybe improved but it’s a long way away). We’ve regularly struggled to pay players if a game gets postponed. Enjoy it while it lasts boys and girls.

3. The end of season contract fun. I think everyone knows how bad the position is for wages this season and in a mad kind of way I’m looking forward to next season. The main reason why is because we’ve seen a Jekyll and Hyde team all season so I’m glad to get rid of some of the big money players who have failed to deliver constantly this season. Hopefully some fresh faces and a bit of Parkin like passion, you never know, if we become well organised next season we could do a Luton. Plenty of clubs have been in this situation and have come out with greater team spirit. Hopefully we can get a couple of old heads to pull through some of the youngsters.

Well I shall finish my little mumble with a saying “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” lets hope it’s the same from the CVA payment  :x

Oh yeah I’m just about to send off my season ticket application. I’m going to be a positive town fan this summer. before you ask, yes i have been drinking

I do like supporting a shit team.

You hear people say "I'm a massive man u/arsenal chelsea fan etc" at work or up the pub, you get to reply "really? I'm a season ticket holder at Swindon, been going for years, always will"  they soon realise they're out of their depth.

I fucking loves it i does.

i think the great fun you have with the "I'm a massive man u/arsenal chelsea fan etc" fans is as soon as you say i go to most/all the games, when was the last game you saw? most will say errrr and not really have an answer.

I've got some respect for fans of the big clubs, my mates been a chelsea fan since he could talk, his old man was in the headhunters and this bloke has missed about 4 games all season home and away (inc europe!). respect  8)  the others are a bunch of tits

I tell you what I am proud as fuck to be a true supporter. I find I get a bit of respect for it aswell.

I have no problem with the real fans of the big teams, it's just the armchair cunts who have been nowhere near Old Trafford, Highbury or Stamford Bridge. But they claim to be massive fans because they've been "supporting" them since they were fucking 5 years old. Pathetic. Or they have a matchday program or something like that. Twats all of them. It makes my fucking blood boil.

I was teaching some kids last week, and they all kept on asking which team i supported every time i answered Swindon and everytime the kid's said 'why?' !!! i told them that was where i was born and had no intrest in being an arm chair glory supporter, unlike some idiots that say they support a team and have never been to see them play.

they all went quiet stood there in their man u and arsenal shirts!!!

Word.

I'd rather be a fan of Accrington Stanley than some Premiership big shots anyday, just so happens I'm a Swindon fan thanks to my old man. I'll always be fucking glad of that.

I love the fact that everyone who comes into my bookies knows I’m a Swindon fan and they make the effort to know what's going on at our club, they look out for our results, talk about past players and potential future ones.
I was thinking the other day what it must be like to be a Celtic or Rangers fan.. the only real uncertainty in the season coming from old firm matches and occasional forays into Europe.
What other groups of supporters could look upon our premiership ‘records’ with pride knowing that we gained respect for attempting to take on the best in the premiership with attractive football.
I don’t think anything could come close (in a footballing sense) to the feelings experienced during Danny’s goal against Peterborough, Adam Virgo's diving header & Bodin’s penalty at Wembley .. the list goes on..

I work with loads of Rangers and Celtic fans and think I would hate to support a big club. You just turn up week in week out and expect to win. That's not what supporting a team is about. You need to experience highs and lows, ok Celtic fans must have been pig sick on sunday but they are NEVER going to experience utter heartbreak of relegation or a play-off defeat. Thats why I adopted Hearts as my second team, you don't know what to expect, qualifying for Europe or struggling against relegation the next.

I still miss the buzz I get from going to see Swindon play and the anticipation before a game. I know they are going to let you down but they are always there week in week out putting us through the ringer! Fingers crossed we can secure a future, I would hate to see any club going out of business. Football fans are the most passionate people around. I went to rugby on sunday and what a crock of unpassionate gimps!

STID!!

The Leicester game wasn't the best, Birmingham 4 Swindon 6 was the best, and I think it was that match which gave the lads the belief that we were good enough to go up.  Leicester match comes a close second though.

I think the opening 3 minutes of the home leg v Tranmere take some beating personally. One up with a Vickers og, two up from Mitch and then it should have been 2-1 when the moaniest scouciest gittyest git of all time John Aldridge had a goal disallowed for no reason whatsoever.  Marvellous. 8)

The second leg up there had its moments as well!

That had ta be the game off the season for me, and one of the few away games I made it too. Despite being well down at one point (4-1 if I am correct). There was still an odd sense within the crowd that we would come away with a win, then the boys turned it on and what happened next was simply amazing resulting in one of my bet days out ever.

Awesome!!  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D

Birmingham was one of the few away games I missed that season, I was coming back from London and tried to find out the result on radio 5 but strangely they didn't mention the score once, think they briefly mentioned something about it being a great game but ended up having to call club call at £2 a minute or something when i got home to find out the score.

Only for it to say Birmingham City 4 Swindon Town 6. :jaw1: :jaw2: Then found out we'd came back from 4-1 down :jaw1: :jaw2:

I have a video of both games and it's hard to say which is the best but I prefer the leicester game 'cos it was so important and I was there.

The tranmere game was great too, best start to a game I can remember.

Best one for me was Town v Chester, we won 4-2 and got promoted from div 4 closely followed by the away match at Mansfield (1-1) where we became div 4 champs, oh and i gotta mention Town v Leicester 4-3 (i was so pissed i missed Bodin's penalty :beers: ).

Well personally I think the best Town game I have been to was Bournemouth at home this season! :x

Seriuosly, that has to be one of the worst performances ever on record!!!!

I would hate to be a Man U fan. I have respect for REAL fans of Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool, but NEVER for any Man U fan. There is no excuse. Support Man City if you're from Manchester, and if you're not support a REAL TEAM!!!

People mock me for supporting Town. I ask them how many Man U wins they have been to, and compare it to the amount of games I have seen Swindon win!

I spend a fucking hell of a lot of money on watching/supporting Swindon too. About £300 (including season ticket) this year, which was a lot for a 15 year old!

birmingham 4-swindon 6, one of the best days of my life, i was at the time living in moseley brum and had been for 5 years, all and i mean all of my mates were blues season ticket holders, so to walk out of that ground {admitedly ducking the bricks} with my head held high was a top feeling.

the hardest part was catching the 50 bus back to moseley which was packed full of blue noses and trying not to smile :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

I agree with all points made.I would'nt really like to support a premiership  team,Personally I find the football in the premiership slooooow and boring.Unlike the football played in this league, its fast and theres so much to play for(something the swindon players should be told) and theres always something happening in lower league matches.example-mad fans climbing on the stands, streakers, away fans getting wet in the end with no roof :soapy tit wank: love it.Its proper football.
Most of us have experienced the highs and lows without a doubt!this is swindon after all.

I have a mate caleld jim who lives in North London, his family are massive arsenal fans.  Normally I find these fans never go to matches.  Jim has had a season ticket for 18 years and blew his life savings on watching arsenal everywhere in europe.  He has gooners blood.  I respect him.

I have another mate (I know shock I have 2 mates) who is a spurs MASSIVE FAN.  I emailed him the other week and said I have 2 tickets for spurs vs villa at villa, he replied saying he couldnt be bothered.  He claims to be a massive spurs fan yet I dont think he has ever gone.  I have never had respect for that.

Was in Portugal 2 years ago for euro 2004 - loads of top lads out there and I got huge respect for the following:-

Random : Who do you follow
Ash: Swindon Town (still had my cockney voice back then so sounded even better)
Random: Yeah but which premiership team dod you follow
Ash: Footys about your team not teh league they are in
Random: Fair play, nuff respect

I am proud to be swindon and will be to the day I die.

Why i like being a lower league fan  8)

1.One season your great one season your crap, your really never sure what your going to get, whether it be that great 4-3 victory at Wembley to getting stuffed week in week out in the premiership, getting 2 straight relegations only to be go up as champions the next season.

You hear people say "I'm a massive man u/arsenal chelsea fan etc" at work or up the pub, you get to reply "really? I'm a season ticket holder at Swindon, been going for years, always will"  they soon realise they're out of their depth.

I fucking loves it i does.

In a nutshell pie-moral superiority!

The Birmingham game was great but some fucker threw a microwave at me, how, why etc fuck knows,
it just come over the fence.
I thought he may have accidentally dropped it , so I passed it back to him.

If success is rare you love it more, you feel part of the success, something arm chair living,
sky TV watching, never been to a real game, shit eaters will never feel.

Exactly Mr Benn, the struggling seasons are great because when sucess rarely rears its head it feels all the sweeter, that moment V colchester wouldn't be the same if I'd seen it on the TV.
