Title: Spotify

Apologies if this has been covered, but does anyone know of any drawbacks to the spotify website?  It seems a bit too good to be true.

you can't buy/download any music so you can't put anything onto your ipod/mp3. dont see the point in it myself, subscribing so you can only listen to music when you're on your pc...

I'm in two minds.  One says this kind of thing could be another nail in the coffin of the music industry.  The other says I've spenttwo hours listening to the Who's ultimate collection for free, and loved every second.

Surely if you've got audacity then you can simply record it for free anyway?

it's not worth a subscription fee because of the obvious limitations (not exhaustive, unable to save tracks) but as a free service it's excellent. the quality of the streamed music is excellent, the speed is superb - although this may change when the service is available more widely, it's closed for a lot of europe and the US still - and it's a great way of sharing playlists.

i've been having fun this week making random playlists. it's great

Where as you listen to itunes with your pc or mac turned off?
Spotify is an amazing tool and anyone can now through a 3rd party get their music up on spotify too.
Edit (of course you listen to it on your ipod ) but i connect my computer upto speakers at home and use spotify often. you can listen to full albums you don't own online and the artist get paid. works for me.

Yes. My ipod is usually plugged into the speakers.

and the artist get paid.

That's just a myth the record labels spread to make you feel guilty about ripping tunes for free, there is a lot more sympathy for a poor artist than there is for a major record label.

At best, only 15% of your £10 will end up with the artists and probably a lot less than that. Some of the stunts the labels pull to screw artists over are beyond belief - one of the majors was even deducting their standard percentage from download sales to cover damaged and returned stock.

I'm a poor artist and in this day and age when most people won't pay for music I'm more than happy to get a couple of quid from each of my sales (through tunecore) and even more so to receive money from people streaming my music as opposed to getting nothing on myspace.
There are more ways to make money as a unsigned artist and spotify is a step forward to help everyone initially although I'm sure the company will sell it over to someone else in the same way myspace progressed
