I think Yeovil was referring to the big country just north of the United States. You know the one where QEII is the head of state, and where a rather dull parliamentary democracy is currently dominated by the Conservative Party. A nation where the closest thing to a social democratic party, the  New Democratic Party has only a small socialist caucas, and anyway has less than 40 MP's and is the third largest party behind the Liberals and HAS NEVER FORMED A FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

It is more blanket than it is here, for example, you are not allowed to buy private heath services if the government supplies them.

That wasn't my source though, that opinion came from listening to loads of podcasts from an English philosopher who lives in Canada. Not having lived there myself, it could be complete bollocks of course.

Websters online provides the following definitions:

1: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
2 a: a system of society or group living in which there is no private property b: a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state
3: a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done

I'd disagree with elements of the first two. State ownership without free and democratic control of those means of production, distribution and exchange  doesn't really stack up to socialism in my book.

Whatever though it's not Canada, it's not the NHS or any other aspect of the welfare state.
