Title: Car Depreciation ................
Post by: Fred Elliot on Wednesday, March 18, 2009, 20:55:52
is a cunt !

Have to sell my car as my work's car allowance scheme will not support cars that pass a certain age.

I have chosen the car I want and am negotiating the deal etc, only to be told that my motor is worth £2500 !

FFS !

I have had it for 3 years (including a year that I didnt drive !), had it serviced and new MOT, not to mention 4 new tyres

I paid well over £12k for it three years ago and I loose £10k in two years driving

Do one and fuck off economy !

There

Rant over

my car cost £260 so i'm not so concerned about depreciation. i'll probably break it before i get to sell it.

One of these?

They look distinctly like one of these to me:

And remind me of these:

the 2nd picture is the rover 400 series (414si i think) the ZT i believe was modeled on the rover 600 or rover 75 the MG ZS is the one modeled on the 400/45 series. and the ZR on the 200 series or 25

They're not just "modelled on" are they. They're pretty much the same car with different trim.

The depreciation is a bastard but it can't have been helped by the manufacturer having gone tits up.

Dont buy Rovers!

It's not just Rovers anymore, loads of cars are depreciating at a crazy rate, although Rover/MG more so since going bust, I agree there.

Saab will be the next to go bust in all likelihood so don't buy one of those.

Quite happy with that I was going to sell it for £2k.

Remember that's part-ex, may be worth more if selling privately.

Then again, even glass's is just a guide price in a volatile market. I guess autotrader is the way to go as an idea of current SPs.

What on earth do they need to inspect for £50?  Are they suggesting a cracked wing mirror may knock off a further 50p or something.

'95 Astra bought in 2004 for a grand.

Now worth £200-ish and still going strong (although I do maintain it to fuck).

That's about £160 depreciation a year.

I win  :D

...or how about:

1960 Matchless G80 500cc, bought in 1978 for £500.

Now worth about £2,800.

That's been appreciating about £77 a year...

You know what I mean clever cloggs 10 years of mis management of the countries finances that have left us in the current situation we are in i.e. the longest and worst predicted recession of all the G7 countries.

Yes sorry I just made a cheap gag. But to be fair, everyone knows buying cars new is a mugs game in terms of depreciation and the 2nd hand car market is notoriously volatile. While it's reasonable to check out resale value when buying to expect that to hold steady three-four years down the line is a bit optimistic. It's like these people who got stung on mortgages because they overstretched themselves and had hoped to use the property in part as an investment. It's not an investment, it's a house, you live there. Likewise, it's not an investment, it's a car. I'd be as p'ed off as you are in your shoes, but having the value fall of a cliff is always going to be the way when you buy a car new

Title: Re: Car Depreciation ................

The only softening blow is that I get £600 a month car allowance but I am seriously considering buying the car outright and keeping it for at least another 5 years . I certainly will not be buying a new car again bearly new is the way forward.

I bought a year old Focus last week.....must admit after a good bit of haggling got a decent price for my old motor (although still lost a lot) the in laws are thinking of getting anew car and want me to go with them to do the deal for them as I'll always get a good deal and they will just accept what the salesman tells them

Title: Re: Car Depreciation ................
Post by: Phil_S on Monday, July 27, 2009, 08:58:18
That we buy your car website is the rock bottom price you should get. Don't forget  that just like a deaer they want to make a profit so it has to be worth more than they will give you. A dealer will be a bit more generous with a part ex cos he will make a profit on the new/ nearly new car that you are buying so doesn't have to show a profit on moving on your old one.
If you can by far the best way to get the best price is to sell it yourself. I've sold my daughters last two cars with great success through the adver/ wilts gazette.
