Title: obligatory music thread MCMLXXXVI
Post by: sonicyouth on Friday, March 13, 2009, 16:36:59
(warning: this thread may contain references to norway or norwegian musicians)

so... what are you enjoying lately? have you made any exciting musical discoveries? are there any bands you wish would release some new material (aside from disbanded/defunct ones)? what are you fed up of hearing?

i've been wishing that kings of convenience would release some new material, so i've been checking out erlend oye's solo stuff and the whitest boy alive. it's a bit too electro at times but quite pleasantly chilled at the same time, bit like royksopp

i've also been listening to red brick dream a lot. i'd never heard it before and checked it out on the strength of adje's recommendation via his signature... i love it.

if anyone likes twee female singer/songwriters, check out rockettothesky

On an americana type tip, Im listening to the J Tillman album at the moment which is pretty good, but more impressive than that is the debut album by The Acorn.  Very very good if you like your fleet foxes / okervil river type stuff.

I like the new bat for lashes single, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8khIEtd5ANs

Also La Roux In for the kill, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkMJZKhVFFY

Another classic from the devil dog of disco drum and bass http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMJveu66GFc

and the MGMT remix http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8Bmczy66to

I love Calvin Harris - I'm Not alone too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clY2RAgXpM0

Standard SY world view then...wouldn't you just die for a set of cheekbones like Morten Harket though.

Loads of good stuff coming out in the next couple of months: Super Furries which I have spoken about elsewhere, Bat For Lashes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs to name a few... but the three I am most excited about are new albums by Mastodon, Grizzly Bear and The Field.

At the moment I am enjoying Animal Collective, the new Trail of Dead (their best since Source Tags & Codes, for my money), Deerhunter's 'Microcastle' and last year's pretty decent debut by Santogold.

And, GK nash, Okkervil River are a truly wonderful band. I can't find any fault with either of their last two albums.

Shouldn't that be the 1986 version Reg?

Nice....I've been grooving to the Manatee Parasites, Welder's Flux and Arranged Marriage.

The Parasites....Tics My Box is sublime.

Is it good?  I never listen to anything after the Miner's Strike.

Been listening to The Cars a lot recently. Mostly because I keep hearing "My Best Friends Girl" on the trailer at work for the film of the same name. But also because I love their poppy, happy tunes.

And Drive, a different but ace song.

Just recently i've discovered a really ace band called 'A Bullet For Pretty Boy'. The name sucks a little i know, but if you like your progressive/screamo/blah blah blah rock, then you'll like these (Which i'm guessin isn't very many people on this forum.....). Other than that, it's the same old same old, from me!

Sonic, any idea if KWD are releasing new material soon? I haven't kept up to date with their 'shizzle' lately......

Oh and for anyone into their 'soft rock', look no further than Silversun Pickups.

I am also liking what I've heard by Wavves

http://www.myspace.com/wavves

'So Bored' contains a wonderfully wonky brand of lo-fi surf-pop.

Can't find a release date for the album. Will keep looking.

Just got the new The Decemberist album, The Hazards Of Love, and so far after just one listen (while working) it's really good. A bit mad folk/prog but very good.

No links yet so here is a great old song instead.

Saw them on Jools Holland a couple of years ago, couldn't get hold of an album so totally forgot about them. Really good music, thanks for the reminder!

I'm loving the new prodigy album, but on the other extreme I'm liking a bit of Johnny hates Jazz at the same time.
