27mph through a red

You went through a red light? Tut tut!!

27mph through a red

Not always, I've had a SP30 and SP50 (speeding) and it made no difference, but red lights (TS10) might do , but not always. Some insurance companies take it into account but from my experience it often depends on other factors like previous claims and previous points.

This thread sickens me

Its fine going through red lights under the speed limit.  Write them a letter explaining this and they will let you off.

Or say you had been drinking heavily in the morning and were asleep, they are bound to reconsider.

Say that your car was completely still and the red lights moved past you at 27mph

Doppler effect?

I was thinking just more relativity but it could be, although I think you get red shift when things are moving away from you.

You could claim the lights appeared blue.

I was talking about the doppler effect with a mate whilst outside having a fag the other day. Although I couldn't remember what it was called. Cheers Reg.

Redshift, is indeed, the Doppler effect when dealing with light.

Yep.

Was a conversation about how we knew the stars were moving away from us. Classic topic in the age of going outside for a cigarette.

Thanks to Reg and Ben (and the doppler effect I suppose) I've just found out the name for what me and my mate at work were chatting about the other week "Time Dilation", in terms of the possibility of time travel.   Have to say sometimes this forum is superb!!!  Cheers chaps!

Ahh. Time Dilation is a fun one for the thought experiments that I can't remember off the top of my head.

The speed of light in a vacuum constant is the stubborn bastard of the physics world. "I'm not going to fucking change, so you can just shrink and grow through space and time to make sure everything adds up".

It's to do with special relativity and observing something which is from your point of view is going through time slower/faster than you are, but from they're point of view it's going normally. I used to understand it properly, but it's one of those academic things you forget how to explain because it's got fuck all use unless you're a research physicist or something.

The wikipedia pages don't seem to be a lot of use.

You could argue that you are colourblind and didn't see the red light.

For added effect send the letter attached to the Darius single of the same name. You will probably then have your fine overturned and be awarded 30 pounds worth of Woolworths vouchers.

If you say you're colour blind then surely you'd have to have a doctors/opticians note?

I'm red/green colour blind, and have been able to get away with fuck all.

So's my brother and likewise it's been of no benefit to him. We only found out when he was a kid and Mum decided to let him choose his own wallpaper for his room - she finally realised the horrible garish stuff he was picking out was so bad it had to be either an eyesight problem or he had clinically bad taste. Turned out to be both. And he's a ginger too.

Sorry for leaving these fun tangents that this thread has bought about but..

If you are in a foreign country (for me, Italy) with a UK registered car and get flashed by a speed camera, will you still get "done"?

I'm not sure on that one, but if you are driving a foreign registered vehicle in this country and get flashed you will not get done!  If you get stopped by the police you will be prosecuted, but then you send a letter to the court saying you have gone back "home" and get away with it anyway.  Ever wondered why there are more and more cars driving around with foreign numberplates?

I thought the law changed on this? I thought all foreign plates within the EU could now be prosecuted?

ask them if they can transfer the points to Swindon Town Football Club

I think it all depends on how automated it all is now.  I had my English plated car in Italy for 2 years and piled up a whole stack of parking tickets which I never heard from anyone about, but they were hand written things which then went away to be processed I guess.  An automatic camera thing might actually be bothered to check the UK database to find out who you are and where you live.

You'll probably get away with it though.  I've got away with nearly £1000 worth of parking fines!

Possibly but I don't think they do it!  You have, I think, six months to re-register any foreign registered car to a UK registration, this is for mot, insurance and tax purposes, but if the owners don't bother they don't seem to chase them.

I didn't know we were related.
