Title: Washing machines Post by: axs on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 17:56:21 Firstly apologies for the dull topic:
I need to buy a washing machine, I've never bought one before, anyone got any advice on brands / sellers / features etc. Ta. Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Samdy Gray on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 18:04:23 I've got a Hotpoint. I don't know how it works, that's not my department, but it cleans my clothes.
We bought from Currys. Hope that helps. Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Sippo on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 18:05:30 We've got a hotpoint aswell. Its white.
Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Samdy Gray on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 18:07:37 I asked the wife, she said something about spins and the higher being the better. Apparently ours is a 1400.
Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: ibelieveinmrreeves on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 18:08:17 Yeah, you'd be better off canvassing the opinions of some females, I reckon...
Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: axs on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 18:10:56 Tinternet says don't buy hotpoint and cheap ones will break soon costing more. Hmm. I want a cheap one though.
Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Sussex on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 18:20:35 Ours is an Indesit 1200 (WIXL123) spin thing, about six months old and hasn't konked out yet.
Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Reg Smeeton on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 18:41:06 An interesting topic and no mistake axs.
Washing machines that are cheapish have a shelf life of about 2/3 years. I had a fairly pricey one which lasted over 20...it got too expensive to repair, because buying a cheapo one was well.. cheaper. The original was a Hotpoint....but they went bust and the name was taken by Candy, so what is sold as a Hotpoint now isn't proper. My original Hotpoint had a massive workload...family of 4...babies, kids, etc...my present cheapo does a lot less. So my advice would be if you're planning a family, go top end, if you're still having fB round to occasionally cut his hair....a cheapo should do. Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: axs on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 18:50:13 I think I might go for the cheapest Bosch one, cheapish and well built.
Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Reg Smeeton on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 18:59:09 I think I might go for the cheapest Bosch one, cheapish and well built. What washing powder and fabric conditioner do you use? Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: THE FLASH on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 19:03:00 Bosch and Meile are the best.
Or buy cheap and replace as you go..... Works about the same. Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: axs on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 19:14:09 I bought the bosch.
Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: axs on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 19:14:25 What washing powder and fabric conditioner do you use? Whatevers on offer. Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: axs on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 19:15:13 Bosch and Meile are the best. Or buy cheap and replace as you go..... Works about the same. The Miele's start at about £600, I'm sure they're lovely but I'm not crazy or rich. Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: THE FLASH on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 19:16:32 The Miele's start at about £600, I'm sure they're lovely but I'm not crazy or rich. But they last forever!! Thats the point of my post...by 3 at £200 instead! Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: dell boy on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 19:41:43 But they last forever!! Thats the point of my post...by 3 at £200 instead! Nothing lasts forever. We change our washing machine roughly ever four years, buy cheap or second hand. Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: suttonred on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 19:44:23 They are all much of a muchness, just make sure you have one that has a hot water intake as well as cols otherwise a standard wash takes about 2 hours.
Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Bennett on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 20:00:05 i have a zanussi one, apparently it's one of the quietest you can get...you'd be hard pushed to tell the difference though
Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Danjackson10 on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 20:01:40 make sure it has a high spin (1400 i think) it meens your clothes will be easier to dry!
Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: nochee on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 20:26:14 They are all much of a muchness, just make sure you have one that has a hot water intake as well as cols otherwise a standard wash takes about 2 hours. Is that a fact, maybe thats what i have. Not my washing machine or apartment, i just rent but a washing cycle takes forever. Yep, just checked. Cold water pipe only, cheap cunts!!!! I pay a fortune for this place too. And the final spin thing is shit, the clothes are still proper soaking when the cycle is finished. Down with shit machines!!!! Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Miss Angry on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 20:30:00 oooh Weird!
Tomo i planed to spend the day looking to buy washing machine! I have been told to go to a place in the outlet village so that is my first stop in the morning... I have spent lots of time this week looking at various friends machines i still dont know what im looking for! Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 20:37:19 I've never bought a washing machine, but if I was in the market for one I'd get one that has a decent sized drum to fit all your clothes in. Also, as I don't use all the fancy settings I'd could probably save money by getting a more basic model.
If I was rich enough I'd wear everything just once. Laundry is a very annoying thing to do. Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Miss Angry on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 20:39:37 im getting a new one cos apart from being 1000 years old mine has no 30 degree wash cycle on it and apparently if you wash at 30 degrees its like doing two washes n you get one free!
Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 20:46:10 im getting a new one cos apart from being 1000 years old mine has no 30 degree wash cycle on it and apparently if you wash at 30 degrees its like doing two washes n you get one free! Can't equate to more than a few pence saved per wash. I reckon you'd have to do thousands of washes for it to pay for itself. How many washes do you do a week? Will the machine last that long? Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Miss Angry on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 20:50:36 Southern Electric told me so!
I do about three... but mine is really old and i want a new one... its so loud that i think its gonna take off or explode at times, and having taken note of everyone elses this week i just want one. Apparently the outlet are cheap cos although they are new they have a scrape on the side or a dent, i will prob get bummed but hey ho! Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: nochee on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 20:54:52 i will prob get bummed but hey ho! Any comments? Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 21:03:41 I think I missed that part of the post, I was in Alan Hayward "it's all a big con mode". But I think an average wash costs less than 10p. You'll save about £15 a year. Might be worth getting a more energy efficient machine as well though if energy efficiency and the climate is your thing.
Didn't know there was a place in the outlet, thought you'd been speaking to Jan. Make sure they'll take the old one away and plumb it in, unless you know someone who can do that. Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: axs on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 21:29:53 I think I missed that part of the post, I was in Alan Hayward "it's all a big con mode". I don't think there is anywhere in the Outlet Village that does washing machines, at least not the last time I went down there - unless the John Lewis shop does them!Tomo i planed to spend the day looking to buy washing machine! Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Anteater on Thursday, February 26, 2009, 23:16:55 Just got rid of a Hotpoint which was a pain from start to finish ! Kept getting it repaired until the missus said enough is enough ! Now using a Fagor (sounds like a someone in Lord of the Rings but is a Spanish make) Had it 8 months and so far so good. 1600 spin means less soggy stuff to hang up or put in the spin dryer !................god this thread is ace !
Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: ron dodgers on Friday, February 27, 2009, 01:11:16 my dyson chews my t shirts up - I should feed it more roughage maybe some coins
Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: THE FLASH on Friday, February 27, 2009, 08:56:23 More money normally means a quicker cycle.
Every month at the end of its cycle my machine switches itself off and goes all moody. Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Forza_Swindon on Friday, February 27, 2009, 09:41:14 Avoid Hotpoint like the plague, they suck.
The higher spin and larger capacity you can afford, the better. Having canvassed the opinion of a few specialised engineers last year, they seem to rate AEG for parts longevity and overall performance... So I went for an AEG on recommendation and it is very decent indeed, loads of time/money saving wash options and all that. I'm sure Miele is properly good too, but they are hugely expensive! Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Jamiesfuturewife on Friday, February 27, 2009, 12:00:09 My advice would be not to buy a washer dryer as if either part of it breaks the whole things screwed
apprently the new black LG one is amazing and very quite and you can also steam things that bit was love from the gays xxx Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Girlslikefootballtoo on Friday, February 27, 2009, 12:06:41 My Zanussi has been going for 12 years now, never had a problem with it (touch wood!)
Mine has the larger drum so you can get more in so less washes over time Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Colin Todd on Friday, February 27, 2009, 12:08:00 My Dad had a Miele that got passed on to me. was 15 years old before it gave up the ghost. It weighed about 15 tonnes though, it was a very difficult 2 man lift to get rid of the thing
Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Batch on Friday, February 27, 2009, 12:38:45 Dear god, a thread on washing machines. Help me.
But while I'm here I may as well comment. It all seems pot luck to me, my mums expensive Zanssi kept breaking down with moderate use. Our cheap indesit never missed a beat in 5 years heavy use before majorly croaking. My mums replacement indesit has broken down already. Our new Zanussi not missed a beat in a year despite heavy use and abuse. You get the idea. Go for one with a decent spin speed. That's it. No point in looking at how many wash programs there are. It's a well know fact only women can destinguish between non-run cloloured synthetics and non run coloured nylons. Men just work in Hot, medium and cold. Hence why laundry washing is best left to women. Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: mrOG on Friday, February 27, 2009, 13:17:09 Got an LG machine with a 1600 spin - cost a bit when new about 4 years ago, but is probably the best machine I have had ( and I have had a couple)
We do washes for little 'uns nappies a couple of times a week, plus all our clothes, so it is going most days and we have not had a bit of bother from it at all - still washes as well as the day we got it. It also has good settings for the colder washes that are all the rage with the new liquids, etc. being marketed at the moment. And it switches itself off when it is finished for nominal power savings. Oh, and I would agree with JFW about washer dryers - avoid like the plague. Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: spacey on Friday, February 27, 2009, 13:21:06 I've just had an email from Mrs Spacey, informing me that she has ordered a Hotpoint Ultima WMD960 free standing 1600 rpm washing machine available in various colours. She sent pictures and everything! I've no idea if it's any good, but I'm more than happy to update you on its performance if you require.
Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Sippo on Friday, February 27, 2009, 13:21:10 Thought this was appropriate: :washing:
Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Miss Angry on Friday, February 27, 2009, 13:54:50 Well a bit late with the washer dryer thing cos i just got one! Although i dont intend to use the dryer... so i hope that makes a difference.
I can confirm that they do sell washing machines, fridge freezers, cookers and dish washers in the outlet village! Mine is brand new, never been used but has a tiny dent on one side and another on the top niether of which anyone will see when installed. It is £390 odd in argos i got it for £250 yay! and its Zanussi with 1200 spin thing which is whole lot better then the 800 i have now! Im excited! Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Arriba on Friday, February 27, 2009, 14:02:58 i've heard that washer driers are to be avoided.
i've never bought one due to that.the all in one option seemed a good idea to me but apparantly they break alot? i have a ariston machine with 1600 spin which i bought when i moved house a couple of yeara ago.i must be in the minority of men as i know how to use it.i was told by an engineer that a few name brands are owned by the same company.cannot remember which though? i think it's ariston, zannusi, hotpoint, whirlpool. Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: ronnie21 on Friday, February 27, 2009, 14:09:28 Well done Miss A, whereabouts are they on sale in the Outlet Village?
Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Miss Angry on Friday, February 27, 2009, 14:10:45 The shop told me bosch, siemens are the same. Hotpoint and indeset same And AEG, zanussi and john lewis own make are the same. Those are the ones i remember
Also most new machines are now cold water pipe only as a hot water tends to burn a stain in or something like that Title: Re: Washing machines Post by: Forza_Swindon on Friday, February 27, 2009, 14:11:13 i've heard that washer driers are to be avoided. i've never bought one due to that.the all in one option seemed a good idea to me but apparantly they break alot? i have a ariston machine with 1600 spin which i bought when i moved house a couple of yeara ago.i must be in the minority of men as i know how to use it.i was told by an engineer that a name brands are owned by the same company.cannot remember which though? i think it's ariston, zannusi, hotpoint, whirlpool. I'd taken the old one down, and was told the replacement they had although not looking quite the same would do the job. I trust people like them so a bit disappointed... |
