Title: O' wise TEF...
Post by: Samdy Gray on Monday, February 23, 2009, 14:50:38
It's the wife's birthday on 30th May and we're planning on a night away somewhere, anytime from Sat 30th May to Sat 6th June.

My original plan was to catch a gig in London and spend a couple of days seeing the sights, doing a bit of shopping etc. but the big gigs in London that week seem to be Britney Spears and Boyzone. I did see Lynrd Skynrd advertised but I don't think the missus would be up for that :D

So, I'm after a few ideas of nice things to do, things to see, places to visit and a place to get our head down for one night (whether in London or elsewhere).

Thankyou please.

Malmaison always a very good bet for hotels although can be a tad pricey depending on the rate you get.

I was in there a couple of years back...I'm surprised it's your scene JFW as I thought it a bit traditional...what with being a railway hotel and all.

Shame you weren't there at the same time we could have swapped stories on railwayana.

Well, think it had been tarted up when I was there summer before last, but they'd obviously and quite rightly made a big effort to maintain something of its original feel

I googled for theatre and hotel breaks last year, got a lush hotel in the West End and seats at the front for about £120. Shame the show was Dirty Dancing. More Sippos sort of thing than mine..

St Ives is rather nice for a weekend break.

The stretch of M5 between Bristol and Exeter is my favourite run of tarmac, anywhere.

Yeah, already had a look fella.

Pricing it up, for tickets + hotel it's about £150 for Manchester and the Oasis gig or £200 for London and a West End show.

google the electric cinema. you can do portabello market in the afternoon, (reasonable) thai curry round the corner then electric cinema in the evening (wine bottle at your leather chair, with a fridge in the arm of the chair). Great day.

That's good, but I don't think you'll ever top the stretch of M6/M74 through Cumbria and the Scottish Borders.  Probably the most scenic and the most over-engineered road in the UK (although I'm sure leefer will correct me if he thinks I'm wide of the mark).  150+ miles of automotive heaven.

(I'm not suggested Sam takes his good lady to Glasgow, by the way.)
