Title: Can someone please... Post by: Samdy Gray on Friday, February 20, 2009, 09:52:27 Post the IP address for the forum. Our work internet has spazzed out and can't resolve the domain name and IE just freezes, so I'm using my phone at the moment.
I've tried just the IP address of 78.129.179.192 but that just takes me to the cPanel page of the server. I'm sure some clever geek knows what I mean. Title: Re: Can someone please... Post by: DMR on Friday, February 20, 2009, 10:05:02 Perhaps you could just go a few hours without posting?

Title: Re: Can someone please... Post by: Barry Scott on Friday, February 20, 2009, 12:43:00 The IP address is right, but the way the ISP resolves the IPs is strange as fuck, and means nothing apart from the root, and ftp give access via the IP. From what i remember the actual IPs are based in the US but the server is UK, so if you can perform a tracert, i expect you'll get the correct IP. I would try to do it, but for some reason my tracert, or my cmd, i should say, is up shit creek.

Post by: Samdy Gray on Friday, February 20, 2009, 13:12:14 I can't tracert, ping or nslookup so it looks like someone's removed the TEF from our DNS.
Title: Re: Can someone please... Post by: Batch on Friday, February 20, 2009, 13:23:43 tracert ends up at the address given above.
I'm guessing this is a shared server and there is some method they are using to direct the "thetownend" domain to a particular directory (or another server) that we can't see? Title: Re: Can someone please... Post by: Lumps on Friday, February 20, 2009, 14:12:26 If I asked what the fuck you were all talking about would that make me look like some sort of Luddite idiot?
Title: Re: Can someone please... Post by: yeo on Friday, February 20, 2009, 15:24:49 is the forum running slow and shit for everyone or is it just me?
Title: Re: Can someone please... Post by: Panda Paws on Friday, February 20, 2009, 16:24:26 No, it is for me too
Title: Re: Can someone please... Post by: Jamiesfuturewife on Friday, February 20, 2009, 16:28:49 and me too
Title: Re: Can someone please... Post by: Sussex on Friday, February 20, 2009, 16:30:45 And me. A critical error would be nice, at least we used to know when it was fucked.
Barry Scott out! :) Title: Re: Can someone please... Post by: flammableBen on Friday, February 20, 2009, 16:31:10 yay it's back again.
Title: Re: Can someone please... Post by: Barry Scott on Friday, February 20, 2009, 16:36:44 tracert ends up at the address given above. I'm guessing this is a shared server and there is some method they are using to direct the "thetownend" domain to a particular directory (or another server) that we can't see? No it's a VPS. Unfortunately, shared would be unlikely to cope with this forum! And it did have it's own IP, but it's now shared with some other stuff, including the server domain and http://dawnofthejed.com. That is the IP! :) No traceroute is needed! They gave me some other IPs, for my DNS (i think) that were Michigan based. And yes Yeovil Blue (and all the other new repliers), it is running slow. It's also crashed a few times i believe. I'm getting onto support now, because some cunt is clearly giving the server too much to do. :) Title: Re: Can someone please... Post by: Batch on Friday, February 20, 2009, 16:46:18 So anyway for future reference, what is the path to the TEF our DNS is down? Obviously thetownend and dawnofthejed redirect to different locations on the server, so http://78.129.179.192/index.php won't work. Title: Re: Can someone please... Post by: Samdy Gray on Friday, February 20, 2009, 16:50:52 Can't be done Batch.
Quote from: Wikipedia In name-based virtual hosting, also called shared IP hosting, the virtual hosts serve multiple hostnames on a single machine with a single IP address. When a web browser requests a resource from a web server using HTTP/1.1 it includes the requested hostname as part of the request. The server uses this information to determine which web site to show the user. If you had the full server path to the forum index page like http://78.129.192/thetownend/htdocs/forum/index.php then that would probably work. Title: Re: Can someone please... Post by: Barry Scott on Friday, February 20, 2009, 16:55:37 You should be able to access it as http://78.129.179.192/~thetowne/
Which is actually what i should of thought of when Sam asked earlier! :D Title: Re: Can someone please... Post by: Batch on Friday, February 20, 2009, 16:57:31 That seems to work.
I assume that is because it has it's own IP address and therefore no domain name resolution is required for further redirects. Incidentally, going back to trace route, I though that just resolved which hops were taken to reach the destination. none more useful than ping in resolving cases like this. Title: Re: Can someone please... Post by: Barry Scott on Friday, February 20, 2009, 17:13:34 You're right, it was my mistake from earlier, because i had a dispute with the hosts when it appeared the ips they'd given me were US based. This was the dns though (I think) and to set my mind at rest they said to traceroute them. When i tracerouted them it showed as a UK IP after about 10 hops, which was my issue. Or something. I fail to remember exactly. :D
