Title: Where to buy a sparkly new computer?
Post by: magic8ball on Thursday, February 5, 2009, 22:27:32
Evening gents.

I'm got a little bit of cash put aside now, and I want to buy a new PC. I have about £800 to spend.

Preferably, I'd like to buy the whole system together (although I'm willing to shop around for the monitor). I know you may tell me to get them separately and build it, but I don't have the time or patience for that at the minute.

I'm looking for a minimum of 4Gb. I'm not going to be gaming too much, but might dabble if the need arises.

Any ideas where I should look? Tried Overclockers, but there aren't too many complete systems on there.

Why do you want to spend £800?

You could get a decent spec PC with 4GB RAM for a lot less than that. Unless you're going hardcore gaming or graphics then there's really no need.

EDIT: actually wait for jjedmunds to appear, he builds systems professionally IIRC, he'll be able to advise you, if not build one for you

Speak to JJEdmunds. He builds systems for a living, for 800 quid he'd set you up with a system that would cost much, much more than that elsewhere.

And he's a fucking rip-off merchant.

If you want to go and buy a complete system then dabs is a good site. Personally, I'd build one myself for £400 a pocket the change :)

basically it depends on what you want to use the pc for?

if it's just web browsing and wrod documents then you can save half your money.
If it's gaming then spend the lot and build yourself a decent syste,

Buying new or pre built you wont get anywhere near the best parts for your money as building it yourself.

JJ will build it for you or SiPi. i would offer also but i live miles away.

Do you need a full system? Monitor, Keyboard etc?

 For my youngest lad's 16th birthday..he got 200 notes as he announced he was going to build himself a new computer.  I thought he was having a laugh...and thought 200 down the drain, but it's up to him.

Lo and behold, he orders these bits direct from fucking Korea or somewhere, which get shipped into Tilbury docks...knocks together all the bits, and ends up with something that looks like a psychedelic, tropical fish tank....and the bugger actually works.

....this is a modern world.

You could always get an Appe iMac, a 20" model costs just under £800. Personally I reckon they are worth every single penny, though I'm sure plenty of people will disagree.

I could and would easily build you a really good gaming system for that price, if that price was for a system with no monitor or kb or mouse or speakers then you would get a bloody good gaming system for that price.

If you need the above then you will still get something much better than Dell or PC World could sell you for £500 extra.

Avoid systems with anything less than a 9800+ or 4800 graphics card as that will be the thing that knocks the price up.

I normally charge friends/aquaintances £40-50 to build a system and install XP/Vista plus postage costs as I live in Somerset not locally to Swindon.

But...if you want an off the shelf system with a montiro then I would suggest
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/155476

Processor
    * Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 Quad Core Processor (2.50Ghz, 6MB Cache)
Memory
    * 4GB DDR2 800Mhz
    * Memory Slot: 2 x DIMM
Hard Drive
    * 1TB (1x1TB) SATA300 Hard Drive
Optical Drive
    * 20 x Super multi DVDRW
Software
    * Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Premium
Graphics
    * nVIDIA® GeForce 9800GTX+ 512MB DDR3 Graphics Card
Input Devices
    * Mouse and Keyboard (included)
Networking
    * Interface: 10/100/1000 LAN, Realtek® RTL8111B
Power Supply
    * 500W Power Supply Unit
Interfaces
    * 1 set 5.1 channel Audio jacks (3 jacks)
    * 1x PS/2 keyboard port
    * 1x PS/2 mouse port
    * 1x Parallel port
    * 1x Serial port
    * 6x USB 2.0 ports
    * 1x RJ45 LAN port
    * 2x DVI
Expansion
    * 52in1 Flash Card Reader

£679 inc VAT

Then add £104 inc VAT for a Samsung 20" monitor
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/151436

Thats £783 inc VAT and Delivery.

Obviously I could make a better system for less but including the cost of building and postage to you after the costs may be offset a little.

Or do as Magic says....build it yourself.....it takes me about 30 mins to knock a PC up together from parts and 2 hours to install and set up and optimise XP or Vista, so an amatuer could easily put one together inside of a day with little problems.

You could buy a 2gb machine and just add the extra RAM in yourself, which is likely to save you some cash and it's very easy to do.
