Title: Wootton Bassett High St
Post by: ibelieveinmrreeves on Wednesday, February 4, 2009, 18:32:14
Read about this this morning in the WDP, the proposed renaming of Wootton Bassett High St to 'Highway of Heroes'. While I appreciate the sentiment, surely they can come up with something less...sucky. Sounds like a term Americans would use - there must be a more 'British' alternative, surely?

So, lets have your suggestions...

How about 'Tragic Waste of Lives, Supporting US Foreign Policy Street'?

That is the most ridiculous thing I've heard in ages. I understand the sentiment behind it but I can't think of a suitable, non-overly-cheesy-Americanised name that would make it worthwhile

Isn't it the road from Bassett to Lyneham that they're thinking of renaming, not the high street.  Is a bit cheesy though.

Rememberance st

I can see the spelling mistake causing a stir in The Gazette and Herald.

Highway of Heroes is an absolutely fucking awful name. It makes me shudder with ridicule.

Did they make a 5 year old come up with it?

My suggestion would be to call it Wotton Bassett High Street. Highway of Heroes is seriously fucking lame. I bet some high ranking council official got paid thousands to come up with that.

From what i remember (from RS) I don't think it was a council official, think it was just a local Bassett fella, who got the idea from some street in Canada.

Ha, ha that'd be ace. Especially if you went to the naming ceremony dressed like that.  The more the merrier, you could get loads of you all dressed up as different superheroes and just pretend, if asked, you all got the wrong end of the stick!!!

I support our troops obviously but they are fighting to keep us free, so we keep what we have so in that respect a street should not be re-named however we have all the holidays etc to remember the fallen.

Your holidays must be pretty depressing, call me old fashioned, but i prefer to relax and enjoy myself rather than remember the fallen

Sorry Gazza but they are not fighting to keep us free, i have never been threatened by the taliban outside Sainsburys, they are fighting because this Government is a puppet to the Bush Administration. The sooner they get the fuck out of Afghanistan the better IMHO, just a needless waste of lives.

Good point well made, however in terms of highway for heroes in general though, the sentiment is still the same, we have days already done for that. Those who fight for us, fight for their country and not to win accolades etc.

I was attacked by a member of the taliban outside sainsbury's just last week.

I defended myself using a 800g pack of skinless chicken breasts and some toilet duck. He wont be bringing his jihad back to Swindon in a hurry I can tell you.

you make me sick herthb.. Whislt people may or may not be agree with the war etc that fact is that lots of young lads have been killed and all you can do is mock there death. You should be ashmed of yourself. You are a fucking cunt, hope you don't slip in the snow that would be a shame. The same applies to anyone else who has made smart arse suggestions!

Perhaps your dickhead comments would be better of on another thread rather than on one that is about remmbering people who have died.

Er no. I really fail to see what that has to do with it. As far as i can see, he was commenting that it was a waste of life fighting in a war we shouldn't really be in, a view i agree with really. He wasn't mocking there deaths, its horrible that they've died. I have full respect for the soldiers out there on the front line, i for one certainley couldnt do it. I dont have respect for the leaders who led us into a war we shouldnt have though

Title: Re: Wootton Bassett High St
Post by: Ironside on Thursday, February 5, 2009, 20:01:51
I think GFM's point is that whether or not you agree with reason that they are there, the fact of the matter is that they are there and they're doing their job and they're dying while they do it.

To hold anti-war demo on the one day a year where the nation does actually come together to commemorate and remember those have sacrificed their lives, so that you don't have to, is not only dis-respectful, it's fucking obscene.

Title: Re: Wootton Bassett High St
Post by: Gazza's Fat Mate on Thursday, February 5, 2009, 20:02:31
This thread was about the idea to remane a street to remmber those that have died but instead it seems to have been hijacked by people making smart us comments about the rights and wrongs of our forgein policy. I just think there is a time and a place for certain things and alittle bit of respect for people who have died wouldn't have gonna a miss. Hence my question you wouldn't hold an anit war march of remmberence sunday but because we are talking about our lads dying in the middle east etc there seems to be no respect just sarcsim.

Title: Re: Wootton Bassett High St

I don't think many on this thread have made "mocking of the dead" comments.  I think the mocking centres around the terrible idea of renaming the A3102 "Highway of Heroes".  Hence the silly remarks.

I've never agreed with the war in Afghanistan or Iraq but that doesn't stop me from respecting the lads and lasses who have lost their lives.

Totally agree, no way would I mock our armed forces, and for what its worth I think the idea of having an anti war demo on remberance sunday is appalingly. However I still feel its a tragic waste of life as any life is lost is tragic.
