Title: Laaandon underground
Post by: Sippo on Tuesday, February 3, 2009, 19:32:13
Fred might be able to help me here. If i'm going to London on friday and staying til Monday is it cheaper to apply for an oyster card, weekend pass or just day pass it. I won't be going out of zone 1.

the transport for london website doesn't have prices for weekend passes. That was the first place I looked.

get an oyster card it will always end up being cheeper. You will never be charged more than the price of a one day travelcard. You will be surprised how little it costs.

he speaks the truth. the oyster makes the buses (90p any journey) and tube cheaper, and is much easier than faffing around with tickets/machines/queues if you go to london a bit.

We only go to london rarely, but when we do its for the weekend.

If I get a card, and say put £15 on it would that suffice for 4 days? As i said we won't be leaving zone 1.

Buses are a pound a pop since January 1st.

Best bet is a three day pass, no fucking about, job done.  £15 on Oyster would sort you for the weekend though I think.

At least with Oyster, anything left over can be topped up next time you visit.

Oyster must be cheaper than that. 2 one day zone 1-4 passes are only £6 each per day if bought seperately

I need to get one of these, might see if you can do it online. Would save me the hassle of trying to get one at a station when it's busy.

I do the auto top-up thing now too, whenever my oyster balance drops below £5 they put £20 on automatically, so never have to go to a ticket office or machine.

Once the queues for the machines and the cashier was massive, so my girlfriend swiped her oyster and i went through with her. With smiles on our faces, we were met by the Transport Police who read me my rights.

It's also worth bearing in mind that if you've got one of the below railcards you can have it permanently applied to your oyster card to reduce the daily price cap by 1/3.
