Title: Swindon V Oldham Official Matchday Thread
Post by: herthab on Saturday, January 31, 2009, 06:46:04
If we get a draw I suppose it'll be a good result.

We need wins though and I'm not convinced we're good enough to go to teams like Oldham and get three points.

It'll definitely be fucking cold though!!

Weird to be missing a game.

In a sick way I hope we don't win so I don't miss it.

over the moon with a point today, only change if any would be tims or easton in for nalis. But to be fair we hadnt won in ages before weds so why not give the same boys a go?

Bizarrely for a historic graveyard, we've not lost at Boundary Park in the last 4 visits.

If we are to stay up, then it is at home where the wins are likely to come from....anything today I'd consider a bonus, and not really expected.

A draw will be good to sneak a win will be tough but not impossible.

I think it will be a close game but with us losing by a single goal in the end.

Only a win was good enough last week, but I'll be happy with a draw today.

My feeling is that we've won important games and then been rubbish in the next game. Oldham got tonked by Hereford, so there's a chance - but they are a Play-Off contender and we are not.

As always, I hope I'm wrong!

Know what you mean..went the other night and there just seemed to be a better feeling from the players..like they were enjoying playing,Walsall were not a bad side IMO...though others will disagree.

Remember we were much better away than we were at home at the start of the season. We have had some good away results!!

Which marks quite a turnaround for you, doesn't it? I seem to recall you being somewhat downbeat before the Walsall match! Apologies if I've remembered wrongly.

Very downbeat...i didnt rate our signings,i do now...i couldnt believe the difference from the Brighton match....i personally think Walsall are a better team than Brighton and we played some great stuff......but like Rich says weve got to back it up today.

Team is in:

Swindon Town: Peter Brezovan; Kevin Amankwaah, Jerel Ifil (Capt), Gordon Greer, Jamie Vincent; Jon-Paul McGovern, Patrick Kanyuka, Chris Allen, Hal Robson-Kanu; Simon Cox, Billy Paynter

Substitutes: Phil Smith (GK), Craig Easton, Anthony McNamee, Hamdi Razak, Lescinel Jean-Francois
--
We seem to have 5 defenders, back 3 and wing backs? Nah, not Allen in the middle on his own, one of them must be going into midfield.

RS reckon Pat Kanyuka in central midfield? This is a massive hmmmmmm.

Title: Re: Swindon V Oldham Official Matchday Thread
Post by: DiV on Saturday, January 31, 2009, 14:12:22
Hmmm

Im surprised Kanyuka is in the squad at all but straight back into the starting 11 in midfield, what the fuck....

I'd say it would be likely Kanyuka plays right back, Amankwaah right midfield and he tucks JPM inside....but who knows I guess we'll find out eventually.

We need at least a 4 points from Oldham and Northampton, so no defeat today please Town

Title: Re: Swindon V Oldham Official Matchday Thread

I'm suprised that Lescinal and Razak have emerged onto the bench so quickly. Is Sturrock no better than a French amateur? We shall see.

Title: Re: Swindon V Oldham Official Matchday Thread
Post by: leefer on Saturday, January 31, 2009, 14:31:17
Thing is Rich,if you sign players till the end of season they got to be given a chance...Sturrocks had plenty and come up short IMO.
Ive been saying for weeks that Morrison should be at least on the bench..apart from Ifils gaffe at 3-0 v Walsall the defence did ok so Morrison is pushed further out of the picture....UP THE TOWN!

Having successfully restrung my guitar with an alarming lack of problems, I can only conclude that it's a good day and Kanyuka will be immense in a 6-0 Town window.

More importantly, the music they play during game coverage gets better and better.

The HPool fans reckoned one of DW's habits is playing people out of position, I really can't see Kanyuka as a midfielder...perhaps DW is trying to convince AF that we need to sign somebody for there...

Title: Re: Swindon V Oldham Official Matchday Thread
Post by: DiV on Saturday, January 31, 2009, 14:50:50
one of them said that to on a forum last night!!

I thought it was rubbish and then we find Pat fucking Kanyuka in mid fucking field.

Title: Re: Swindon V Oldham Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Rich Pullen on Saturday, January 31, 2009, 14:53:15
Weird, I don't think I've fogiven Oldham for Gunnar Halle's cross and Paul Bernard's finish to score in the 90th minute back in '93.

I have no plans to forgive :)

last time I went to Oldham we were 2-0 up and Jeff Stelling said on Soccer Saturday the only team in L1 who hadnt come from 2 goals down to gain a point this season was Oldham

So, naturally Oldham scored twice and we drew 2-2.

The biggest problem of the Malpas era was players that couldn't play with confidence, Wilson identified this immediately.  Playing each game with belief and without fear is key, we are going to lose games and this is a tough game.

That's actually a load of bollocks. If the sub is done in 10 seconds tghe ref should only add ten seconds on. If the guy takes 1 minute to leave the pitch the ref is meant to add on 1 minute. I'm not sure if the 30 second thing was a guideline at some point or if it was media invented, but it's not in any official refereeing handbook that I've seen

As mex said as well.

DW is quite reassuring in his interviews. He doesn't just say things like "We have to stop letting goals in", but he actually seems to have a game plan in mind as to how t do it.

In one article the other day he was going on about how the players have to work when we don't have the ball.... Well I think that is what got us the draw and clean sheet today.

I don't know why everyone is worried about relegation at the moment, we're miles clear (sort of).

We're 6 points clear of the bottom 3 and 2 points clear of Leyton Orient with 2 games in hand. Plus you can add another point to the differences (so 7 and 3) due to our superior goal difference.

Maybe we'll need to start worrying in a few games time but at the moment its cool.

Kanyuka talks how he plays football, slow and relaxed and stoned!

He was a little confused, bless.

We should give him a new nickname ... Lorry.

He articulated so well.

We're nowhere near safety, and far too close to relegation. I'm confident we'll survive but we can't afford to rely on other results. We need to win more.

Today is a great result though.

our saving grace or nail in the coffin will be Orient, Cheltenham, Crewe & Hereford at home.

It's unusual to get so excited by a 0-0 draw :)

This is often what happens in a relegation dogfight, the teams at the bottom start improving and midfield teams start getting dragged into it.

Any three of Cheltenham, Hereford, Crewe and Leyton Orient are probably going to be relegated, possibly all four.  I don't think two out of that four are going to escape.  With fifty-two points, it won't matter.

On my way back and posting from my phone so haven't read the thread, but it was a great performance today. Very well battled and a thoroughly deserved point. The back 4 look to have a lot more confidence and Greer is the main reason for that IMO.

I don't know how DW came up with the idea of putting Kanyuka in midfield, but he was fantastic. He won headers and tackles and broke up the play really well.

Razak looked lively when he came on. Still a very rough prospect but one hell of a good scissor kick. I think he'll do well for us and going by his performance today then perhaps he deserves to start in place of Paynter on Tuesday.

This is the key run, if we go down after these set of fixtures - we deserve to go down.

21/03/09    H   Hereford
28/03/09    A   Yeovil Town
04/04/09    H   Crewe
11/04/09    A   Brighton
13/04/09    H   Leyton Orient
18/04/09    A   Carlisle
25/04/09    H   Bristol Rovers

I feel DW may have them sorted by then. Hopefully.

Windass usually blasts one past us, so it was good to keep silent such a deadly player.  Oldham must have smelled victory in the second half, and it must have been cathartic for the Town players.

Went to match today, can't beleive how solid we looked. Brez had to pull off a couple of good saves but all in all a decent performance, Kanyuka put in an excellent shift (if unspectacular), and on another day we may even have nicked it.

Good game today, end to end stuff, defence held out well, kanyuka MOM until he went off - winning balls to allow allen to play it around & hassling their midfield, good call by DW,now we can get rid of nalis.

Back four had a good game greer & vincent looked like they get on very well on that left channel, glad to see ifil being given captaincy giving him that confidence he lost.

Kanu didnt really do anything spectacular, mcnamee came on for him and the game turned straight away, macca had a good run out imo,but others may disagree.

up top we created good chances and space, but allen and jpm seemed like they were confused with who they wanted to pass to,that'l come to allen if he gets a good run out for the next few weeks, jpm was just poor, his movement after passing was appauling, but some of his crosses were top notch.

razak did well wen he came on playing "like a 12 year old" who wanted teh ball, just needs to be less clumsy and keep his arms down when challenging,a better target man, but is pushed off teh ball relatively easily considering his physique, and was given a lifeline when the ref backed down from sending him off,cos in all honesty he should have seen red at least once.

good point again though :)

Much more encouraging, didn't go on Tuesday so first time I've seen the shiny new defense and I have to say I'm impressed.  Amazing what difference having a left back makes, Vincent's distribution is still a little shady but he knows how to defend and we looked so much the better for it.

Greer was unremarkable but solid and I'd be very happy if we managed to bag him permanently, looked comfortable and didn't hoof it too much, good L1 defender.

Somehow the central midfield partnership worked and Pat Kan looked so much more assured than he does in defense, provided good cover to allow Allen to try and play football.

Razak is a head case, really aggresive in the air and that scissor kick came right out of nowhere, would have been a fantastic goal.  Didn't look great in possession but I expect with a bit more experience and game time that will get better.  Think the ref got a little carried away with himself really, one of the free kicks given against him wasn't a foul at all and I think the left back knew the ref was on the look out for Razak, bit of gamesmanship there for sure.

All in all a good performance but we weren't great in wide areas if I want to be picky.

Kanyuka played really well today, broke most of the oldham attack up. Brez 2 saves at the end kept us in it. Also Oldham keeper save from Razak shot was top drawer material. Thought that one was in.

Never saw him a lot of tuesday, until he played a crossfield pass from the outside of his boot that spun a mile straight to jpm ,not seen anything like it for years, but it was missed by most i think, absolutely top class

Dont think you were watching same game.Allen just learning his craft while Nalis couldnt play two games so quickly hence the gaffer said on radio he will be in and out the team as he is young. As for McGovern he sees a pass plays it and the player hes trying to pass to isnt on same wavelength as McGovern is a move ahead thats why his passing looks appaling..All in all I thought all the boys did well to defend and attack as a team.

seems to be a difference of oppinion then cause i thought mcgovern passed the ball and just gave up, when he could and probably should have run forward to get the ball again, this happened time and time again when teh 2nd player played into a gap for mcgovern to run into....and he just didnt, especially in the last 20 minutes.

as for what is said on the radio,i cant listen to the radio so my views dont involve any form of input from the media except from what i read on the internet

It's easy, you just turn it on and let Mr Hadwin's dulcet tones sweep over you. Or is this some really obscure radio allergy? ;)

Oh, and fair play you for going to the game and backing the lads - all piss-taking aside, that gives your view of the game far more weight IMO than lightweights like me who've mastered this radio malarkey but couldn't make it oop north

Bollocks. I lost count on Saturday of the number of times JP passed the ball then, instead of running on for a return, stood there with his thumb up his arse. You may be right about being on a different wavelength though, as everyone else was running for the ball. Interesting too that he was the only player that didn't come over and applaud the fans at the end.

Probably because even he realised he'd had a poor game.

A 'Shithead', I thought, is a Bristol City supporter. I support Swindon Town.
I never said JPM was a bad player, in fact recently I've thought he'd been playing well.

On Saturday he was shit. Most of the fans knew it and so did he (Which was why he left the pitch immediately and never came over to us)
