Title: PC aids. Post by: BANGKOK RED on Friday, January 23, 2009, 06:11:10 Well it looks as though my PC at home has teh aids.
I was playing FM 2009 last night, when my PC froze and then showed the blue screen of death. Now when I try to turn it on, it starts up for a few seconds (Light on MB comes on, CPU fan spins etc), and then turns off again. I am so hoping that it is just a PCU problem as I am not sure I can afford to replace much else. Somebody PLEASE tell me that it is likely to be the PCU, pleeaaaasse. Title: Re: PC aids. Title: Re: PC aids. Post by: BANGKOK RED on Friday, January 23, 2009, 08:37:47 Power control unit, the bit that you plug in to the mains.
Title: Re: PC aids. Post by: Simon Pieman on Friday, January 23, 2009, 08:51:05 Check everything is seated correctly in the motherboard.
Also although the cpu fan seems to be working, if you have a graphics card check to see if that fan is working. Title: Re: PC aids. Post by: Peter Venkman on Friday, January 23, 2009, 09:18:22 If the cpu fan and mobo light come on then chances are its not the PSU mate.
The list though is almost endless for other problems it could be....the memory may have overheated and fucked up...if you have 2 memory modules try removing one of them at a time and trying to see fi it will boot. It could be the processor has overheated due to dust build up...give it a hoover out and make sure its all seated properly. 3 ... could have blown the graphics card.....see if the fan is spinning on it, if you have an option of onboard graphics then take out the graphics card and reboot....or if its onboard can you borrow a graphics card and plug in and reboot. 4 ... the motherboard has blown a component, if it reboots and you have intermittent problems afterwards the chances are the mobo is fucked mate. 5 ... the hard drive may have seized, if its an old one...replace and retry. sorry for the long list but its difficult to suggest what it could be from such a distance mate. Post by: BANGKOK RED on Friday, January 23, 2009, 15:03:59 Well.
Whilst I went out for a bevvie after work. My misses was kind enough to take it to a shop. Upon coming home I find myself with a PC that has been cleaned up, reset and 3 new fans installed. Sorted. Title: Re: PC aids. Post by: magicroundabout on Friday, January 23, 2009, 15:36:14 i installed a new fan on my comp last week. Nice big 120mm jobby to suck some fresh cool air into the case.
Trouble is it ran @ 1800rpm and sounded like a jet engine. It wasn't until i found the box in the cardboard recycling that i found the missing resistor which came with it. Now happily running @ 900rpm. JJ, What's your views on this little cheap number http://www.riffdesign.co.uk/radford/190101/nott/supoll.gif looks good for Crossfire @ x16!!!! Title: Re: PC aids. Think I need to get a fan controller. thats what i was looking into until i discoverd my fan came with a resistor so i had to hunt out the box and there it was sat inside!!! they're cheap enough to buy two more with resistors rather than buying fan controller!!!! i've got this http://www.pc.rhul.ac.uk/staff/j.balsters/images/Homer%20Brain.jpg Title: Re: PC aids. Trouble is it ran @ 1800rpm and sounded like a jet engine. It wasn't until i found the box in the cardboard recycling that i found the missing resistor which came with it. JJ, What's your views on this little cheap number http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/JandW-X48D2-EXTREME-P-Sok-775-PCI-E-20-(x16)-DDR2-800-1066-1200(OC)-SATA300-SATA-RAID-ATX looks good for Crossfire @ x16!!!! I am lucky I use an Antec 1200 case so the throughput of air is vast with 1 200mm fan on top 2 x 120mm fans at the back and 3 x 120mm fans at the front and all have a 3 speed setting so they run really quiet. As for the X48 mobo Magic....Save your money and get the I45 TPower http://www.bbc.co.uk/threecounties/content/images/2006/01/11/rentaghost__470_04_470x353.jpg Got full crossfire...the X48 is no faster than the P45 and has crossfire...costs £35 less and the reviews are fantastic, the best overclocker on the market at the moment, can overclock up to 600mhz FSB which equates to around 5200ghz! http://entertainers.co.uk/comedy-speciality/comedy-speciality-Images/roger-de-courcey/RogerDeCourcey2.jpg I am going to stick one on in my next build for a customer to try it...I will keep you informed! Title: Re: PC aids. Post by: magicroundabout on Friday, January 23, 2009, 16:12:38 sweet cheers.
but doesn't the P45 only run crossfire @ x16 x x8??? Title: Re: PC aids. Post by: Peter Venkman on Friday, January 23, 2009, 16:15:18 It does indeed but I doubt you would ever notice any decernable difference in x8 and x16 in the real world, I may be wrong but I will have a look around at some benchmarks first before deciding.
Title: Re: PC aids. Post by: Peter Venkman on Friday, January 23, 2009, 16:16:57 I think this answers my own questions......

i'm slowly upgrading my system and was thinking about i7 but not sure the performance gains really warrent spending almost £700 on a new board, cpu and ram!!!! was thinking £150 on new card and £150 on new board. But doing that i'm not sure if my E8400 @ 3.8ghz would bottleneck the cards? Title: Re: PC aids. Post by: Peter Venkman on Friday, January 23, 2009, 16:27:18 I dont think the E8400 will bottleneck at all especially at 3.8ghz, the E8400 will only bottleneck if you do sever multithreaded multitasking.
But then again the Q8200 will easily hit 3.6 to 3.8ghz on a good mobo and is available for around £150 or for £20 or so more get the 2.55ghz Q8300 quad core......a sweet overclocker. Title: Re: PC aids. Post by: magicroundabout on Friday, January 23, 2009, 16:33:47 yeah i'm thinking quad too. Everyone raves about the Q6600 too.
i have also been thinking DDR3. but reviews show not much gain over DDR2 Title: Re: PC aids. Post by: Peter Venkman on Friday, January 23, 2009, 18:00:34 I am using DDR3 1366 on my P45 mobo and its no real improvement on DDR2 1066 IMO.
Title: Re: PC aids. Post by: magicroundabout on Friday, January 23, 2009, 18:17:22 I am using DDR3 1366 on my P45 mobo and its no real improvement on DDR2 1066 IMO. thats what i thought. My ram is running 1021mhz at present so will only notice differene if running 1600mhz + Title: Re: PC aids. Post by: jayohaitchenn on Friday, January 23, 2009, 21:45:28 ???? Sorry, was mocking your use of multiple exclamation marks. BTW, do either of you know of a free anti virus tool that will install on Windows Server 2008? After trying AVG, Avast and Kaspersky I am thinking I might have to install an enterprise version. Any ideas? Title: Re: PC aids. Title: Re: PC aids. Post by: Peter Venkman on Friday, January 23, 2009, 21:56:44 I have heard F-Secure Anti Virus but I have not sued it but have heard its not bad and not as memory intensive as most.
