It struck me this morning that the respect and reverence American's have for their institutions cannot be matched by any other country. While I sometimes baulk at the mawkishness of American patriotism, I also have to concede that elements of it are quite impressive, and even touching. And the rituals (such as that of the inauguration) are pageantry, pure and simple - 21st century pageantry. Ironically, most Americans would probably give the UK as an example of a country that still believes in pageantry. But in my view, American pageantry is the most striking example you will find.
