Title: Murray aka amusing place names
Post by: Luci on Friday, January 2, 2009, 17:27:03
For anyone interested, Murray beat Federer today in Abu Dhabi and will play Nadal in the final tomorrow.

Just thought I'd mention it in case anyones bored and didn't realise it was on as could prove a good game!

On the other hand - suggestions of amusing place names are welcome  :D

Abu Dhabi has to be one of the most satisfying place names to say. Tegucigalpa being another.

But the best name ever (in my view, at any rate) is a little closer to home in East Yorkshire.  Holme-upon-Spalding-Moor is a tiny village (and ex-RAF station) between York and Hull.  I drove past there years ago and fell in love with the name there & then.

I used to venture into Sussex when I lived on the South Coast, and always had a smile at Didling and Cocking.

There's a Cocking a few miles from Didling. Near Midhurst/Petersfield I think.

Upper Dicker probably deserves a mention too  :)

Edit: Sorry for hijacking the tennis thread Luci.

Edit part 2: Didn't read Regs post properly. Doh.

Locally to me in South Yorkshire I've always liked:

Peniston, and
Blubberhouses

Whereas I'm not keen on:

Carsick,
and Deepsick

I've always been slightly frightened of:

Thurgoland

which despite being between Sheffield and Barnsley always makes me think of somewhere that would be visited by a small group of explorers led by Doug Mclure in a 60's adventure film losely based on a novel by Jules Verne or Edgar Rice Burroughs.

I'm not sure what a Thurgo is but I'm imagining something like the Morlocks in the original 1960's version of The Time Machine.

You've got the "puddles" down Dorset way.

Tollpuddle (of martyr fame)
Affpuddle
Puddleton
and just up the road there's Troy Town.

Yatton Keynell (where my mum hails from) always gets a weird reaction when I mention that name. Yatton K is connected to Tiddlywink and not too far away from the village/hamlet/whatever of Shoe.

I actually stayed in Tollpuddle for whole week once.  It was shit.  No Union cunts knocking around though, that would have livened it up a bit.
