Title: Home Grown Players
Post by: Arch Stanton on Thursday, December 18, 2008, 12:36:10
I see this has just got the thumbs up from all football league clubs.

From next season each match day squad will need to include 4 home grown players......

Good? Bad? Worth discussing?

I thought it was only for the football league? It's not even home grown really, as long as they've spent 4 years in the country you're fine.

I'm pretty sure than under these strange regulations, Fabregas, Clichy, Djorou, Denilson, Diaby etc will all count as home grown, I think it's at least four years before they were 21 or something like that.

I checked it, it's three seasons domestically before 21st birthday, that makes around half of Arsenal's squad home grown. Can't make it anything to do with Nationalities as EU Law would stop that.

plus arsenals bench usually has a few brits on it anyway.liverpool, chelsea, and a fair few others would be effected more than the gooners.the arsenal thing regarding this is exaggerated

Do sheep shaggers and Rab C Nesbit's count as domestic and if so what's the story with clubs based in Wales.

All seems a bit pointless.  Presuming the Welsh and Scotch are domestic which league clubs could even break this rule?

i guess it will mean that the big four clubs will buy more young players even younger and chuck them out of loan in the British leagues rather than in say Spain or Belgium as Arsenal and Manchester Utd do at the moment.

It might be better for the standard of the lower leagues but it will dump more 18 year old Brazilians, Argentinans and Spaniards in our leagues.

Which might be a good thing - sorry I'm still thinking this through before I form an opinion.

Its Football League only, not Premier League so as normal the big clubs can do what they effin' well like...

FL only, the players don't have to be born here, just registered as players with the English FA for 3 years before they were 21, most FL clubs already have a good chunk of English players with a smattering of foreigners anyway. More headline-grabbing window dressing from Mawhinney. Very good, now what are you going to do to stop all those clubs on the precipice from going to the wall? Dock them 30 points, splendid.

Good.  Arsenal will be screwed unless some of their kids come through fast,

Do you think the Arse will get relagated then?

More importantly even if these rules applied to them, I think you're going to find that a fair chunk of the Arsenal first and reserve teams came through their academy, so they'd probably in a stronger position than most premiership clubs.

Having said that even the likes of Blackburn, Pompey and Bolton can probably manage to scrape up 4 domestically produced players out of a matchday squad of 16 each week.

Actually that is a good point - teams going up will end up bringing in hordes of foreigners and then dumping them when they go down - probably trading them with the next team coming up. Bit like everyone did with Herman Hreidarsson did a few years ago.
