Quote Swindon Town chief executive Nick Watkins last night insisted a deal to secure the club's preferred managerial target was close – but admitted the final decision was now in the hands of others. Watkins has been locked in talks with the club of Town's No 1 target for the last 48 hours in a bid to thrash out a compensation package to bring their man to the County Ground. It is believed Town made an offer yesterday and the club in question has now gone away to decide whether or not to accept it. Watkins said: "At the moment the destiny of who will become our new manager lies in the hands of others. The candidates we are talking to are all in work so there has to be talks on two sides of the fence. "We can only control things to a certain level at our end and the only thing that has changed in the last 24 hours is that it is taking a little longer than we anticipated at the other end." It is understood that an announcement could still be made this afternoon with Nottingham Forest boss Colin Calderwood, Sheffield United midfielder Gary Speed and Newcastle Academy director Richard Money believed to be the three candidates still in the running.
