Title: Today's The Day?
Post by: herthab on Wednesday, December 17, 2008, 07:53:33
Or is it?

Will our new manager be finally unveiled and will be start moaning immediately? Or will a new mood of optimism wave over the CG faithful?

Or will nothing happen at all?

The anticipation is killing me.......

If they lived in Swindon they'd be grizzlies.

I think Mex's post is a clue that it's going to be Sheringham.

See them pick Nick on their holiday.

I think you'll find Mr Fitton was culpable there especially as Pudsey and co. are not really into holiday romances.

Swindon Town chief executive Nick Watkins last night insisted a deal to secure the club's preferred managerial target was close – but admitted the final decision was now in the hands of others.

Watkins has been locked in talks with the club of Town's No 1 target for the last 48 hours in a bid to thrash out a compensation package to bring their man to the County Ground.

It is believed Town made an offer yesterday and the club in question has now gone away to decide whether or not to accept it.

Watkins said: "At the moment the destiny of who will become our new manager lies in the hands of others. The candidates we are talking to are all in work so there has to be talks on two sides of the fence.

"We can only control things to a certain level at our end and the only thing that has changed in the last 24 hours is that it is taking a little longer than we anticipated at the other end."

It is understood that an announcement could still be made this afternoon with Nottingham Forest boss Colin Calderwood, Sheffield United midfielder Gary Speed and Newcastle Academy director Richard Money believed to be the three candidates still in the running.

Town caretaker boss David Byrne, meanwhile, finally conceded defeat in his bid to become Maurice Malpas' permanent successor last night and then admitted: "I haven't delivered the results to deserve it."

Byrne is set to resume his role as assistant 'until told otherwise' and is still expected to take charge of the side for the crucial battle of potential relegation candidates when Yeovil arrive at the County Ground on Saturday.

He said: "I am disappointed not to get the job but the bottom-line is that this business is about results.

"When you add up the number of points (four) we have collected from the six games since Maurice left it is certainly not good enough. Do I deserve the job on those results? The answer would have to be: No."

Byrne will be without suspended striker Billy Paynter for the visit of the Glovers but is hopeful that another forward, Barry Corr, will recover from a calf injury in time to start for the first time in almost a month.

Midfielder Lee Peacock should be available despite being substituted at half-time in Saturday's defeat at Crewe with an Achilles problem.

Well, not really. I went to all the effort of finding the article, copying and pasting it here, then posted only to find that little "there have been more replied to this topic" pop up and find you'd already done it. What a waste of my time.

Morning folks... Really hoping today will indeed be the day we appoint someone.

1) Because this has gone beyond funny.
2) I really want to us beat Yeovil Town on Saturday. Not that I believe in manager honeymoon periods but hell, even Malpas was in the dugout for the Nottingham Forest match.
