Title: World Cinema
Post by: Rich Pullen on Friday, November 28, 2008, 22:33:13
Any recommendations? Was looking at my DVD collection and it was lacking non-English speaking work. I'm quite partial to a foreign language film, bought Black Book today - which I've heard good things about.

Cheers  :)

Think City of God is the only subtitled film I've seen all the way through, but you've probably seen that.

I liked it a lot.

Cheers,

Barry Norman

I can recommend Ônibus 174, a Brazilian film Mex got me onto a couple of years back, great film very much in the City of God mode. Of course, there's Pans Labyrinth, Der Untergang, Spirited Away... but i'm sure you are well aware of them

The Seven Damurai - Japanese - Black and white - 3 hours long  - excellent. The Japanese versions of Ring 1 and 2 were also far superior to the US versions.

Tell No One [Ne le dis à personne]

Based on the crime thriller novel by Harlan Coben. Book is set in America but this is a French film. There are a couple of differences in the plot as well, but I quite liked all of these differences because it almost felt like a different story.

My favourites are both German.  'Das Boot' has been shown quite recently.  And 'Heimat' is legendary (and controversial).  I remember watching Heimat as a kid and being hooked.  I still can't quite put my finger on why.  (There are three Heimat films, with a total running time of over 50 hours.)

Anything by Werner Herzog is good....particularly Fitzcarraldo and Aguirre, Wrath of God.

Anyone interested, there's an active film society in Swindon....in Jan they're showing The Marriage of Maria Braun by  Rainer Werner  Fassbinder.

Waltz With Bashir is really excellent. A cartoon documentary about a massace in the Lebanon might not sound much fun but it is great. Although not as a date movie.

What he said, gorgeous film.  The shorter version that was released in cinemas originally is better than the full one though, I think.

Terkel in Trouble is pretty funny for something which is Danish. Get the English dubbed version which has Adrian Edmondson and Bill Bailey doing voices (amongst others).

Watched Jean Reno and Christian Clavier in Les Visiteurs which was enjoyable.

Put all the suggestions that work had in stock to the side and have ordered some others too.

Love Brotherhood of the wolf and apocalypto. Not read the entire thread, but if not mentioned before Old Boy, Infernal affairs, and  A very long Engagement are favs of mine, there's something about subtitled films (probably because you have to watch everything) that make them particularly satisfying in my eyes

Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma

To be honest, only watch this if you're really interested in seeing it. It's an interesting bit of cinema, but once you've seen it you can't undo it. It's sick and horrible in it's exploration of how far people will go for their own personal pleasure, and not in the gratuitous way you see in modern films like Hostel. It's fucked up. I'm not exaggerating or being melodramatic or anything. It really is fucked up.

But yeah if you're interested then watch it. It's not just fucked up for the sake of it, like you get with something like Cannibal Holocaust. It being fucked up is a valid part of the film. But it's still really fucked up.
