It's the way of the world...the only question now, is if it will be an internal appointment. or a new broom.  From what has been said previously, you'd expect an internal.

Fucking hell. In some ways I'm surprised, but in others it's not a surprise at all.

Budgie in charge for a couple of games wouldn't be too bad.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of the move it is the time to do it if we are looking externally - there are a number of good managers who have just been sacked and the managerial merry-go-round is just getting going.

Last nights rumour mill seemed a bit more real than usual so I'm not that surprised.

If it's true then we're definitely up to 4 consecutive seasons without a manager in charge for a whole one. Good old King.

Holy cow, didn't see this as a possibility until january at the earliest. Maybe there is more going on than just fan unrest? If it does happen i'll be a bit sad in a way, it's not nice to see someone with the best intentions fail or be sacked. But if it is for the greater good of stfc then it has to happen.

Also gives the new manager time to assess the squad and where he wants to strengthen in January I guess.

just read somewhere that Bodin could be in charge for the Leicester game. So surely Budgie would be gone as well then if true.

I'm suprised at the timing if not the action, but I guess Fitton didn't want a showpiece game like Leicester having as bad an atmosphere as seemed inevitable.

Sam, Sippo, if Big Sam does get the job are you going to sever the feet first and maybe get fb to flambe them Hannibal style or just gnaw them off in place? This certainly adds a new level of frisson to the normally tedious "Who's going to be the next manager?" debate!

I've never called for MM to be sacked and really wanted him to do well, but it's become apparent, even to me, that there's something not quite right at the moment with regards to the playing side of things (And I don't just mean the results) some of his substitutions are puzzling, as is the Ifil situation.

Wouldn't wish unemployment on anyone, and I've certainly got no hostile feelings against the bloke but if it's the right thing to do for the sake of the Club, so be it.

I really hope not.  What we really don't need, in my view, is a 'name' who will drop us as soon as another offer comes his way.  As a club, we've been stung that way more times than is healthy during the last 10 years.

Genuinely sorry it hasn't worked out with Malpas, but I hope our next manager is selected on the basis of having at least some experience of successfully managing a Div 2/Div 3 club.  The strategy of appointing someone on the basis of a strong interview and little track record clearly hasn't worked.

I'd have to sever it first, I can't get my feet up that high to knaw on them.

Would anyone be happy with an appointment like Teddy Sheringham, someones first stint at management?

Just looking at Di Matteo, he's done well. Everyone needs a lift, a 'name' would certainly do that. If an experienced manager came in, would they do anything this season than just survive? Its a hard one.

I have supported MM since day one and as a person I am gutted to see him lose his job after uprooting his family etc to the area. Genuinely as a person I am absolutely gutted for him. He always treated me with respect. During the team photo shoot he was talking to BBC and came over and said “good to see you again” really was a top man.

As a Swindon Town supporter he had to go, we weren’t going anywhere,  We have a good squad but he has somehow with Byrne and Williams managed to turn us into a shocking and gutless team. I am very hopeful we get a motivator now as MM was very soft spoken who can take us forward.  We have a squad more than capable of being in the top 10. The players will want to play for a new manager. DON’T expect results right away if Byrne and Williams are in charge though (which I am lead to believe they won’t be) , Williams and Byrne are part of the problem. The results will come when the new manager comes in.

Reality is MM will likely never get another managerial job, his record is poor at best but will get a coaching job somewhere in Scotland I expect. As a person I wish MM all the best, as a fan I would say good riddance and let’s now “do a spurs”

UP THE TOWN!

I hope if / when Malpas goes then Byrne is dispensed of as well, I don't blame Ady as he is a young in-experienced coach (and also got a playing contract).

I'd like to see someone brought in, a big name hopefully that has seen it and done it, I don't buy this that they will be off as soon as something else comes along as they need to have success first and foremost.

We can't really afford to take our time appointing someone though as we don't want to slip into the bottom 4.

But the merry go round is in full swing so there are enough decent managers available.

Come on AF now is the time to get a name in to "unite the clans" sorry fans.  A clear out would be the best for all.

Shame if MM does goes, I don't have anything against the bloke personally, unfortunately he just was cut out for the role.

I think Malpas is a good coach and will get a decent job in that area, the same as Kingy really, he was never ever a manager but a good coach/scout. He's found a good job utilising his expertise and I'd expect Malpas to do the same.

I reckon Fitton's probably got someone lined up already so I'd expect our caretakers stay to be brief. Although I will refer to an old post I made saying that we need to get Holloway in before the Leicester game as old managers tend to haunt previous clubs - and I'd like some serious haunting to go on on Saturday!!!!

Back in 93 I got some serious hassle from some Leicester fans at Wembley, saying that though I was a pretty annoying 20 year old back then - fearless and gobby and drunk!!!  Christ I just had to edit this post as I got my age wrong..... getting old is what does it...

Swindon Town Football Club have this morning announced that Maurice Malpas will be leaving The County Ground with immediate effect by mutual agreement.

Assistant Manager David Byrne will be taking charge of team affairs until further notice.

The Board would like to place on record their thanks for the professionalism that Maurice brought to the club in so many areas during his tenure.

A full statement from the Board to follow.

I have nothing against Malpas personally (and have enjoyed the flashes of good football he occasionally produced at the tail end of last season and very beginning of this), but with the season over in November (barring a relegation scrap) and only Rovers at home guaranteed to draw a crowd after tomorrow, I think this is probably the only way for the board to inject life back into what's turned into a damp squib of a season.

I'd really like it to be Holloway, but I worry that Fitton might not want it to look like he's had Malpas's replacement lined up for weeks. I don't think the fans would care though. This one certainly wouldn't.

We should be in for a good performance tomorrow. The players will know they need to impress whoever it is that's coming in.

Byrne might be able to fire them up initially, but I don't think he's a long term option.

(But what do I know, I thought Malpas would be a success)

Definitely not Byrne and Williams, we need a whole new management team to come into the club.  Both of them have to carry the can as being part of this unsuccesful regime as well so deserve to lose there jobs at the club.  Would be happy with Dowie or Holloway, could Boothroyd be lured in?(very doubtful I know)

Stranger things have happened. Especially if Maurice had lost the dressing room. The players may show what they can really do now..........

i know what your saying but it's chain of command isn't it.
Byrne is next in line so he takes charge as he has also been working with the first team where Bodin hasn't.

He wont be here once the new guy comes in.

Fair point I just hope he doesn't do what he did last time and come over to the fans after every game and do really over the top celebrations which was blatently to promote his own credentials for the job ...... as one win would probably see a load of people thinking he should get the job permanently as he seems 'passionate and enthusiastic'. Just hope he's been told his reign is purely temporary.

I can't stand Byrne, the bloke is a prize idiot.  Just his general attitude is shite.  I remember when we did that members lounge thing he left the room saying "I suppose I better get back to those idiots down stairs" etc.  Old school knob jockey, who should be out on his ear as I feel he, and the rest of the coaching staff, let MM down badly.

No hard feelings MM, but your time was up. Good to see Fitton take decisive action at this stage.

Personally I'd like to have seen Byrne and Williams follow too (at the same time) and I hope to god that whoever gets the job has the opportunity to refresh the backroom staff and not be lumbered with them two.

Nonetheless, now is the time to get behind Byrne and the players and cheer them on to a result against Leicester tomorrow. I won't be there (bugger paying full price for a ticket.....) and I wasn't going to bother even listening, but I might just have to listen now!

Now here is a surprise name, but likely complete rubbish… LOU MACARI… now he has a proven track record here.. Someone text me to say he is the favourite although I think its rubbish. Fitton has said you don’t go back although he has been bringing back names from the past. Personally I think Lou’s job with MUTV would keep him there…

PROS

-Instant hit with the fans
-Would re-unite fan base
-Would get bums in seats
-Fitness would improve tenfold.

CONS

-Not managed since Huddersfield in 2001
-Does he still have it?
-Easy choice
-You never go back

No, not at all, after all we never won last time he was in charge did we? Just an idea, but maybe try getting behind the team/caretaker/new manager when appointed. Or we could all wait and see who's appointed then put the boot in right from the start like people did with Malpas. That'll help

Because so many people's beef with Bryne seems to consist of precisely just that - "he shouts and waves his arms so he's a moron". At least you had the decency to judge his coaching abilities on the basis of some random anecdote that apparently shows he's a "knobjockey"  ::)

No Paul I base my views on the bloke from a variety of experiences, and apologies for using the term "knobjockey", didn't realise that in some way makes my OPINION less valid.

I have never taken to the man, again, TO ME, he comes across as an old school style of coach, the advantages of keeping him in the set up are escaping me at this time.

Exactly. FWIW, I quite like him on a personal level, but that makes no odds whatever about his managerial/coaching ability. I don't really care whether I like/dislike the managers/players/whatever  - I want to watch them play football, not move in with them

And therein lies my feelings aswell.......having spoke to him at numerous away games he always mades stupid comments, Jan's comment about him at the legend's thing pretty much sums him up as a person. Look at the Zaaboub thing as well, yes Zaaboub was an petulant idiot but your assistant manager shouldn't be almost fighting with players what kind of example does that set. I also feel aswell as never getting the fans behind him MM was on a loser from the start as Byrne blatently wanted the job himself and there was always an underlying tension between the 2. Add in the shit football we've seen this season for which he must take a lot of responsibility himself and it leads me to not really think much of him. It's not purely based on the fact that he looks a tit in the dug-out.

Fine, but the example you gave was in my OPINION a poor one of why he is a bad coach/manager. I stick up for Byrne for the same reason I stuck up for Malpas a lot of the time - because a lot of the criticism he gets is unfounded/irrelevant to his abilities as a coach/asst mgr/caretaker/tea lady. If you founded your OPINION on more relevant grounds than those you gave fair enough, but I went on what you posted. So hang me

To me what is also good news, is that sacking Malpas after only 10 months or so is essentially an admission by the board they got it wrong, but instead of backing a mistake regardless to save face, they’re rectifying it as soon as is necessary.

Malpas was Fitton’s appointment which fulfilled the criteria of stability, loyalty and developing the youngsters. This is why I never thought any sacking would be as quick as this - Fitton would back his man, yet as soon as Malpas showed he was clearly not up to the job, Fitton et al took decisive action. This decisive thinking is good news for our club.

I don't think they reflect his personality. Look at that whinging, miserable twat in charge at arsenal.

but in our case they do....his dour personality, his negativity, his clear lack of hunger/enthusiasm, his decisions..malpas also doesn't reflect fitton's personality...we need that hunger, desire, ambition and professionalism....fitton needs to make sure we get the right man in this time and take his time appointing the right man(altho we don't want to be in a relegation battle come christmas). I'd like to think he has already had numerous meetings with, for instance, Holloway to establish that he is the right man for the job-the relationship of fitton and the new man will filter through the club and bring us some success with a bit of luck for good measure!

you know yourself if you have someone in charge that you respect and listen to, they'll get more out of you....from personal experience it works for me both at work and even my football playing days

Good article/interview that, think it sums it up well.  Hopefully Fitton will learn from his mistakes and get someone in who can drive us forward.

MM was close to leaving football before he came here, I wonder if he'll call it a day now, and concentrate on something else, stand up comedy maybe?

I'm not sure which way to take the whole waiting until someone available like Tottenham might have done bit.

Did he mean that he's had someone in mind and reckon they'll take it now, or just a more vague there's lots of people out there and it's a good idea to get in there whilst there is.

He signed Cox, McNamee & Timlin technically.

He put young Sean Morrison he's only 17 in the first team

Our performance at home to Swansea last season with 10 was excellent

We beat Rovers away and we beat Port Vale 6-0

I think at this level you need a name bigger than the players... Wise, Sturrock and dare I say Kingy etc command respect from the players just because of who they are, we all know who Ollie is and thus I bet he'd get more from the players than Malpas, or say Iffy, - it's widely suggested the squad had no time for him.

I'd fucking love a random appointment of a big name with no previous... someone like Teddy Sheringham or Martin Keown, won't happen though.

he'd whet the appetite for me

He has explicitly said on Radio 5 that he is after a job in management and would look to go down the "Paul Ince route" to gain experience and learn the trade.

However, when I hear him on the radio and see him on the telly he just states the bleedin' obvious while trying to dress it up as amazing tactical insight. Not at all sure he's worth the risk when there are decent experienced options available.

Here is a shot out of the dark (unless someone mentioned it as I have not read the thread) - Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. Says he wants to manage. Big name, will start from lower leagues.

It's certainly a big name, must be a good 25 letters. Ace player as well.

Same as Dennis Bergkamp.

Nah, you misheard - he said he wants to go up Paul Ince's passage. It was a massive self-outing that everyone missed because he's so dull to listen to

I'd much rather go for Poyet, he wants to be a manager, the only reason he left last time was to follow his mate Dennis as they was 'a team' now he can be his own man.

High profile Young up and coming managers have had success over recent season's (Ince, Ferguson, Keane, Di Matteo) but there is an argument that says we need experience here ala Sturrock though

Just listend to Fittons interview on the OS

I'm not hanging out of his arse here, but It fills me with happiness that we have a bloke so intellegent, articulate with a real passion for the game running our club.  (not to mention rich with even richer mates!)

He makes a lot of sense, especially the bit where he talks about Joe Kinnear and Chris Hughton at Newcastle.  Kinnear says Hughton is a better coach than him, the reason kinnear is a manager with a reasonable track record is that he can get inside players heads (not literally) and raise their level of performance.

The relevance to STFC is that he says managers need a cretain "sparkle" or Charisma that you even have or dont, regardless of how much of a student you are of the game or how good a coach you are. He dosnt directly say it but its clear he means malpas does not have this even though he maintains that he is an excellent coach.

On this basis I think Holloway will be our new manager as the charismatic figure head, hopefully with an experienced coaching team underneath him. (again not literally)

Hes from Oxford thats gotta rule him out surely!?

No, Yeovil, it gives everyone an excuse to get on his back the moment we don't win a game at least 3-0

We probably couldn't afford him if he turned down Portsmouth anyway

Seconded.  Despite the very obvious misjudgement in appointing Malpas (based on a misplaced 'gut feel', it appears), I still maintain that Fitton is our best signing from the last few years.  I remain confident that this is all going to come good in the end.

Viva AF.

Iain Dowie instead of Malpas ... not rocket science!!

Goodbye Mr Magic! Hello Mr Ugly!!

Strangely Dowie has a degree in rocket science....unlike MM who has a degree in electrical engineering.

Whoever takes over, will have the same problems as MM, namely a squad of players with too many not up to the required standard to mount a challenge in L1.

Given that it's been stated the squad is too big and sales need to happen, it will take a gaffer of serious ability to move us forward....

I think it would just take a manager who could get the players putting in a bit of effort. Every fan wants promotion, otherwise what's the point?

However, I think many recognise this could take time. What they couldn't stomach was the limp wristed efforts like the game at Histon. The games we've done well in recently are how we should have been performing all season in my opinion. If we get beat to teams playing like that then it's because they are a better team. Sure, fans won't be happy with a defeat, but they won't feel like our team is a lost cause.

I'm not sure it's as good as the adapted Madonna tune, but I can always change it if we do indeed get Holloway in.
