looking to spend a couple of nights away over new year, preferably not too far so rules out anywhere north of manchester - any ideas?

This place (http://www.westonmanor.co.uk/) is pretty nice and a stones throw away is a pub, called the Ben Johnson (http://www.diningpubs.co.uk/pub_details.asp?id=953), which serves properly nice food. Amazing in fact. It's close as well. And when i stayed, cheap.

I stayed within the smaller building on the side, and was puzzled by the lights coming on upstairs every so often. I was later told, nonchalantly, by an employee, that i was in there alone and that building is haunted. Night 2 was not so comfortable.

How many people are you going with? What sort of thing do you want to be doing (or is it this part you want idea on)?

My shed's pretty cosy and only 12 mins on the choo choo to Brighton. £15 pppn.  :)

devon or cornwall, some beautiful places. I'm doing a week in st ives for new year, but there are some really noce places about, depends what you're after...

London will be mega but I recon it would be worth every penny. I think that Birmingham would be good too :)
