Title: computer help request
Post by: Arriba on Friday, October 31, 2008, 21:29:04
right.my pc is playing up.if i switch it to standby then try to get it going again it sort of tries to work, but puts out no picture, and after the fan kicking for a while in it then does nothing.i have to switch it off at the power to get it going again.if i switch the pc off then restart it works fine.
my daughter(who is 8)was the last one to use it before it went stupid so i have no idea what the problem is.i tried a system restore to a week ago but the problem remains.
anyone have a clue what the fuck it's doing?

I take it you're running XP?

First thing I would try is to disable hibernation, reboot and then re-enable it.

If so go to start>control panel and in classic view select 'power options'. In the hibernation tab untick the 'enable hibernation' box.

Then obviously reboot and then retick it. See if that works.

Don't blame your innocent daughter. Clearly your late night porn surfing fucked it.

Have you plugged something in you wouldn't normally have done? e.g. into a usb port?

Try going back into control panel and then keyboard settings and see if there is an option to allow device to wake up from power saving mode. Do the same for the mouse.

no good si.cannot see those options through the method you describe.
it's weird as after putting it in standby mode which it does ok it just wont start up again.the fan kicks in then stops after a few seconds, the blue light stays on but thats it.
i think its fucked.nothing i have done could have done it. and how an 8 year old could wreck something a sytem restore wont sort i dont get?
think it may just have run it's course.
it's 3 1/2 years old and has been used loads.

It just sounds like a setting or an application is preventing it from waking up. It isn't the computer that's fucked imo. I've had similar things in the past, they're all settings related (or something tricking the computer to do something other than what you want it do).

Thinking about it you'll need to right click on my computer>properties>hardware>device manager and then right click on the mouse and keyboard and change the option in there.

By the way what computer is it (make and model)?

packard bell, model utow-san.
checked both the mouse and keyboard settings and they are set already.i can hit a key or move the mouse and the fan will initially kick in,blue light comes on, but then nothing.

I've just realised that those settings are not available on SP2 or 3 of XP. I should check my own machine before making such suggestions!  :-[

Anyway, I think I have a potential solution and rather than explaining loads of boring stuff and getting you t ochange endless options, I'm hoping this tweak I created will work. Download the file I created and double click it. It should hopefully sort out your problem.

If that still doesn't work I'd say that your BIOS has a power option enabled/disabled that needs to be changed.

Tap the del key when you turn on the machine and it will take you into the BIOS. Have a look for any power management options. You can always write down your current settings before you change any of them in case you want to change back at any point.

Definitely not a case of your hardware packing up if the computer works fine otherwise though.

Ah crap, I'm too tired it seems. I won't go to the trouble of trying to fix that file, the more I think of it, the more I don't think it'll work.

I'd have a look at your BIOS options and see if you can change anything in there. I reckon one of your windows updates (SP3?) has thrown something out.

Sounds like it is coming out of standy but it's not powering the monitor on. Is your graphics card using the latest drivers?

Is it not posssible for Si to do remote assistance, or is the computer not getting that far?

Yep that's another possibility.

Given it will switch on the fans when you move the mouse I think it's safe to rule that one out anyway.

Another tip to try Arriba is...

Go to your control panel and open your "power options"
click on the "advanced" tab
ensure the "prompt for password when computer resumes from standby" choice is unchecked

I have had this problem with PC's in the past and it has been due to a corrupt Virtual Memory (something that a system restore wont fix).

Go into control panel
System
Advanced
Performance - Settings
then click on the advanced tab
Virtual Memory - set that to no pagefile

Then reboot

then when its rebooted put the pagefile back again set it to 2048 or system manage.

See what happens then, also a very good 15 day trial software that will check out your whole system...... http://www.iolo.com/downloads.aspx system mechanic pro, I use it regularly it will check your whole system out for problems.

Restart the machine and tap F8 until you get the startup menu up. Run it in safe mode and it should work.

Sorry it didnt help mate, did you disable the password on when computer resumes from standby.

Otherwise its a problem I have never come accross in 20 years of fixing PC's!

If you do find the answer let me know so I know what to do if it ever happens to me :)

I think Sam's mention of the graphics driver may be the problem. I had this exact problem with my pc but I can't remember how I fixed it. There's so many causes. I'm now starting to wonder if a reinstall of my graphics driver fixed the problem as I was having other issues with it at the time.

Arriba, if you go to start>run and type in DXDIAG and click ok and then select the display tab.

Tell me that the name of the device is (top left box) and also the version of the driver (top right box). I can then find the link for you to download and install the manufacturers driver and hopefully it will solve the problem.

Download the driver from there (you want Sis graphics driver for sis315).

Unzip the download file and then double click the setup file.
