Title: Who is the most overated
Post by: Foggy on Tuesday, October 28, 2008, 08:34:06
Musician or group in the world?
I would have to say the Beatles, In an era that produced the Stones, Hendrix et al the fab four were no better than their modern day counterparts WestLife. All they sang was happy clappy shit. Please discuss

A lot of the biggest musicians of recent times would disagree with you Foggy.

Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller amongst many, many others have cited Lennon and Mcartney as big influences.

That fucking Bob the Builder's got a lot of admirers though......

The Beatles are not overrated, and they're later stuff is awesome.

I find it hard to slate the big bands from the 60's and 70's because I wasn't a part of it and cannot comprehend the shift from what people were listening to before.

Admittedly I find alot of modern bands totally overrated.

In conclusion: What the hell does Daniel O'Donnell do to these old ladies at his gigs? I always see this (to quote the film Office Space) "no talent ass clown" on jumpers, key rings and the smiles of the older generation!

Not sure if Revolution 9 qualifies as happy clappy shit.

A while ago i would've said the Beatles, but having done some listening since that time i'd say their music is good, so therefore can't be overrated in my mind.

I think Nirvana and Oasis are massively overrated. And Cliff Richards (cunt).

Its almost laughable to anyone with even the smallest grain of musical knowledge to say the Beatles were overated. Putting aside the huge catalouge of songs, they were musical pioneers in the recording process alongside the Beach Boys. Constantly pushing the boundaries in musical and cultural directions. To have one incredible songwriter in a band is brilliant, to have three is just down right fucking ludricous.

Now dont get me started on pink.

I'd say U2 but that song Sunday, Bloody Sunday "really encapsulates the frustration of a Sunday, doesn't it? You wake up in the morning, you've got to read all the Sunday papers, the kids are running round, you've got to mow the lawn, wash the car, and you think 'Sunday, bloody Sunday!'"

I would have to say U2 are the most overrated band.  They haven't really done anything decent since bloody sunday. People always say Nirvana are overrated but every time I listen to nevermind or In Utero I have to disagree, they are incredible albums and deserve to be acclaimed. Shite like take that is also overrated by people who have no taste but surely everyone else realises they're talentless cunts. Queen are overrated, they're songs are very mixed some good ones and some definitely not but they don't deserve to be 1st in so many best album lists.

Oasis for me. Everything since Morning Glory has been fairly shite (some of it's OK but it's nowhere near as good as the first 2) yet people actually love them that much. Some people are obessed. I just don't get it tbh. So for me they are probably the most over-rated. Some new bands like Kasabian and The Killers and Arctic Monkeys are over-rated as well. Some are good but some are terrible. In any event most of them are over hyped.

Led Zepp are overrated in my opinion. Elvis was absolute crap. Queen deserve an honourable mention. U2 deserve a medal for having their heads up their own rectums. Radiohead are the Monty Python of music - they're either ace or crap, no in between. Madonna is complete cobblers. I really hate the Rolling Stones - they've produced nothing of note for over 30 years.

i'm torn over nirvana...

they were really just an amalgamation/rip-off of their influences, pixies being the most obvious, but they bought a genre to the mainstream and kurt was still a good songwriter.

pink floyd are marmite. i love them but they're very much a band you need to be in the right mindset for.

A lot of bands can maybe produce 3 or 4 top quality tunes, which guarantees you mid table obscurity for life if you want it.....a few like Squueze produced maybe 2, which confines you to being the Rochdale of the music world.

If you can produce, say 8 to 10, then this puts you up there with the likes of Abba....Champions League regulars.

I once heard a radio interview with John Lennon, in which he said he thought he and Macca had only written one decent song....Day in the Life.

Those Kings of Leon, I don't mind their latest ditty on the wireless and even have a sing song in the car but they’re the music equivalent of cottage cheese.  Rather bland and consumed by the obese wanting to lose weight.

Oasis have never re-captured those first two glorious albums and the more stuff they release the further away they seem to get from ever doing it again.

I’m also torn about Nirvana.  Hugely charismatic band that brought a genre to the mainstream but they were far from ever being original or way ahead of the game.  I still listen to the odd album and I have to agree with Jack Osbourne they’re a great band and old pulped face was a cracking writer but their fan boys calling them the greatest thing since the A Team both back then and now make my eyeballs itchy.

Lou Reid, at times he’s pure genius but at others it’s pure shite.

The above all said I’ve always struggled to purely just listen to music and appreciate it at that aesthetic level.  What tinkles my bell is when a track encapsulates a moment in time, an even or a person and no matter how shite it sticks with me and I usually end up enjoying a lot of their other work.

Title: Re: Who is the most overated
Post by: Rich Pullen on Tuesday, October 28, 2008, 14:28:52
I think Kings of Leon have be thrown into the deep end by the UK a little bit. They are a great band, but they've suddenly become massive without massively improving and are still unable to crack the United States (not that it matters but their sound really should have by now). Their first 2 albums, in my opinion, are infinately better than the next two. Their current effort is quite forgettable, I like it but it isn't as music changing as many would like you to think.

Reid I'd put in the 6-8 category of top tunes...maybe 5 top tunes with the Velvets and 3 on his own. Champions League aspirant, but only one win with Perfect Day.

Nothing much for 30 odd years.

On the topic of Nirvana, they're probably my favourite band and definitely shaped my music tastes in my early teens. I still listen to their music quite regularly (I'm listening to them now infact) but I'm not a huge fanboy and won't go telling people they're the best band ever etc. I just see them as a personal preference.

This thread's quite subjective really, someone's overrated band can be somebody elses favourite. It's all down to individuals tastes.

I happen to love The Foo Fighters, or loved their first 2 albums, but all i've chanced a hear of lately, or post The Colour and The Shape, has been weak. So they could be considered overrated? Although i do thing they're the bollocks still. :)

Abba

Mr. Lennon was probably being a bit of a knobhead that day then :)

the manics are class.

I agree-the only band that can still write a decent protest song

I also agree. If anything they are underrated.

Thing is, there are bands I detest which seem to have contributed to music. Saying Led Zeppelin and Rolling Stones are overrated is a bit extreme imo. How many iconic rock riffs did Led Zepp produce? Jimmy Page is a brilliant guitar player.

The Stones were one of the bands to pave the way for rock music and certainly British bands going to America. Those are some decent achievements.

If someone says Kasabian as an example (again subjective on musical tastes), you'd have to ask what they have done as a band. They haven't shaped music, they're not massively different to anything else. If someone said they were overrated I'd have a harder time arguing against it (I probably wouldn't), but I do own their albums and like a few of their songs.

Most U2 songs are terrible and Bono is a twat, yet they are still revered by many...

faith and pornography are immense

The two don't normally go too well together...most people I know who have faith are not keen on porn.

I have never seen the attraction of the Rolling Stones.

The Rolling Stones "The London Years"(their 60's stuff) is a quality 3 cd collection, some quality tracks on there!  Not so keen on their later material.
