Title: FAO people at uni
Post by: Rossi on Friday, May 13, 2005, 14:55:20
I'm hoping to go to Portsmouth uni later this year, and I think the accommodation stuff is supposed to come through next week.  I'm probably going to go for the en-suite bathroom and self catered. Does this sound like the best option?
Also do you rekon it's worth me getting hold of a laptop for lectures and playing footy manager, or would it just be as easy to take my PC down and put it in my room?
Is there any other tips you have, like stuff to take etc?
I was thinking it would be good to go over to France every so often to stock up on cheap booze :)

Damn you weren't you going to Sussex?  I was hoping to liftshare next year so I can see the mighty Town in action!  I'm in the same boat, and you definitely need an ensuit or it'll be tricky doing your hair in the morning....

I never even looked at Sussex. I have Hertfordshire as my 2nd choice.  I couldn't stand sharing a bathroom with lots of other people.  Pubes in the showers, shitstains in the bog and people passed out from the night before :beers

You''l probably want self-catered. I was catered in my first year and the food was shit.

Dunno about en-suite. If you really want it then go for it. Got to balance the extra expense vs the extra few pints you could afford each week.

You'll likely to have an awesome time in halls even if you end up living in a shit hole.

I only ever had my desktop while at uni, and in my experience very few people take their laptops to lectures anyway. Just a bit of a hastle carrying it about, and accidently leaving it in the bar after a post-lecture drinking session

Well I'd definately say that going self-catering would be the way to go.  I did in my first year and the students that didn't moaned like mad about the food.  I do enjoy cooking though, so it suited me.

En-suite probably would be beneficial, but I never had it so I can't really comment.  On the plus side though you wont get loads of girls breathing down your neck to keep it to the unreasonable standards they like to keep.

Laptops are cool, but you wont take it to lectures.  You will though find one usefull for group projects,

accomodation wise, i went for the most expensive one with en-suite. if i could apply again, i'd go for the second cheapest option because they're the one's with the best atmosphere and i think that pattern is pretty much common at most unis.

nobody uses laptops in lectures. desktops are fine, i've got a laptop for ease of transportation but i use this at home too.

I just don't like the idea of having to share a bathroom with 8 other people and have to queue in the morning for a shower

i dont really care what my room looks like or if i have to share showers, but if thats important to you then go for it. do remember you'll be sacrificing some of the party atmosphere though probably. i was lucky and got a good flat in terms of flatmates but some of the one's downstairs are full of losers who complain about smoking and stuff.

Whenever I've been a student "the morning" was something you tried to avoid.

exactly, you wont be waking up until at the most you've got 1 hour until your next lecture/seminar, everyones shower times will be staggered.

I've only ever had a desk-top at uni but there are a couple of times when it would have been useful to have a lap-top, namely group work and being able to go home at holiday times and do work without having to drag the pc home (my parents didn't have a pc at the time)

I shared 2 showers and 2 toilets with 6 people in halls, looking back I can't think of a single time it was a problem... everyone had different timetables which rarely clashed.

It was the cheapest halls that seemed to be the best laugh though..

I was in a catered hall and the food wasn't bad, but the set times were a bit of an arse... Having said that, you don't have to think about what you have to buy etc. Also the cooking in the kitchen can be crowded if you all decide to cook at the same time.

I went self catered with en-suite. I would agree with oxford that I would go for the cheapest option next time round - there is a better atmosphere in those halls. Also, when you move into  a house in the second year, you will have to share a bathroom anyways.

Laptop wise - I wouldn't bother is you have a decent desktop - I've only ever bought in my laptop for group work anyways and I could have used the uni pcs anyhoo

Think most places, particuarlly with newer halls are pretty much all self-catered now. Exeter where I am is a bit odd because there are 2 massive catered halls.

Apart from being catered, I lived in the dirtiest cheapest room in the place (although exter's relitavely expensive) and I was living in the basement. but I still had a great time .. I think I did anyway. So much of it is a blur

all of our accomodation is self-catered, apart from those egyptian blokes who get free meals it seems.

our cheapest accomodation is £25pw in Waveney terrace, which they're pulling down at the end of the year. You are woken at about 8am every day by builders constructing a massive new accomodation block just outside your window.

£25 p/w

Think the cheapest here is £54 p/w, but it's probably gone up again

it's a right shithole though. all breeze blocks (exterior and interior) and the rooms look a bit like a prison sell with crap bed, bookshelves, desk, washbasin.

shared kichen between 12 people sharing a flat seats about 3 at once.

I went for fairly cheap accomodation 'cos I thought it would have the best atmosphere and it definitely did. The rooms had ensuites, it was just a little pod in the room but it was alright, I share a bathroom this year which is no problem really as everyone uses it at different times anyway.

All self catered, seems like a lot of hassle sticking to set times with catered.

This was my halls.

Know he went to lethbridge and commonweal, just like me. but seems to be a fair bit younger.. about 18 now? I reckon that he either a) knows my sister, b) I'm just more famous than I thought, c) knows me through the only people I can think of who are about that age, Ollie or Jack. d) I'm beeing stalked by a psycho forum member.

Hopefully he'll tell me so I can stop being scared.

I looked around Portsmouth and I thought the Uni and City was a dump... I chose Plymouth so what the fuck do I know.

Good Uni though!
