Poor old Phil Neal won't be watching TV tonight... Unless Graham Taylor tells him too!

I think so. His turn as Graham Taylor's lapdog essentially ruined his coaching career. But in fairness he was doing a good job doing that on his own.

Taylor actually had a tough job to do, the England team were in a transitional period, very average players available at the time, he, like a certain Town manager, was never flavour of the month, mocked by the press constantly - like it says "An Impossible Job".

Do I not like that.

Also replaced a mega-popular manager, never easy. The player pool looking back wasn't great. Sounds familiar aswell!

Might be a nice bloke, but any manager awarding 20 odd caps to Carlton Palmer gets no sympathy from me,though the referees perforance v Holland was a disgrace and a win in that match and things wouldve been different, sounds all too familar though.

Before Euro '92 England under Taylor had only lost once (to the Germans) in over 20 matches. England got to Sweden and buckled. After brief redemption immediately after the competition it all went ridiculously bad after the loss with Norway.

Just to be objective, Bobby Robson was never particularly popular, no England manager has been not even Sir Alf...which is why it's the impossible job.

Fair enough... How about a manager who succeeded in reaching his bare minimum objectives of qualifying for international competitions and even in one case overachieved? :D

Terry Venables was a very popular manager for England with the fans.

I enjoyed Gazza shouting "We hate Sky" while one of their reporters was trying to record a link.

It wasn't that bad a qualifying campaign for england to be honest.  Shame that taylor was treated like shit by certain areas of the media.

Gazza was great... It's sad to think of what he's become.

I enjoyed Taylor taking the journalist down a peg. I bet he was SCATHING after the Dutch loss.

Rob Shephard is a cock at times.  Funny but I can' t help but see  similarities between GT and MM.  Even the fact that both are pretty unlucky.

GT was right though, what the fuck does negativity do?  On the positive side of things I mean - nowt.

I rated Dorigo as a kid... But he was never "England standard" whatever that means... He was 100% Aussie too.

Carlton Palmer, Andy Sinton, John Salako, Tony Daley to name but a few.

Yet it was John Barnes that got most of the stick - a player who at least had international talent!

best footie documentary ever. 'Hit Les, hit Les!!!"

"You do realise I'll get the sack for that, don;t you."

Great insight, but seems really dated now.
