Title: Ralphy
Post by: Sippo on Saturday, September 20, 2008, 23:40:09
As I can't post this in your forum, please can you answer me this?

Honda Civic Type R or RX8? Type R will be having cheaper tax in 2010 and is fwd, while the rx8 is cheaper and is rwd. Is the civic that good?

RX8 is a nice, reliable car but the rotary engine drinks oil more than the Honda i-VTEC unit and thats saying something.

I take it you're looking at the new shape Type R?

Performance wise, their both fairly even. There are 2 RX8's on offer, one with 190 bhp and one with 231 bhp. The 190 version is a fair bit slower than the Civic due to weight.

I know i'm not Ralphy, but i had a similar dilema recently and do like the cars alot.

For me it would be an easy choice. One is a 200bhp front drive hot hatch, the other is a coupe, with suicide doors, which has won awards for it's handling balance and poise.

Given the choice it'd be the RX-8 everytime (sorry Ralphy) simply because the handling has won the RX-8 awards and has had many other tasty accolades thrown it's way.

The press say you should go for the 190bhp RX-8 over the 230, because the torque curve on the 190 bhp is better and the 230 bhp lacks grunt unless you absolutely rag the bollocks off it.

Through the bends the RX-8 would leave a Type R behind, i suspect on a straight there wouldn't be much between them but i suspect the Type R would have a slight edge.

I'd also be careful of the Wankel, not for it's oil drinking capabilities, but because the engines, supposedly, don't last quite as long as a conventional unit and in comparison we all know Hondas last forever. Low mileage or replacement engined RX-8 for me, if for nothing else but because there's less of a hooligan element to it's image. :)

I'm with Barry, I'd go for the RX-8 but only if you've got the extra cash to keep it well maintained.

The problem is though that the Car tax is going upto £410 in 2010.

RX8's are nice motors, my mate's brother has one.

If you buy a Honda though your guaranteed a bullet proof engine and what an engine it is. I'm not saying this because I've owned 2, if you don't want to take my word for it, search the net.

Type R's need plenty of oil though due to the i-VTEC system which relies on oil pressure.
