Title: The everso slightly official TEF Ryder Cup thread
Post by: janaage on Thursday, September 18, 2008, 11:59:20
Anyone watching this, this weekend?  I'll miss most of it due to my bruv's wedding, but I do love watching the event on the whole.

Must say before a ball is struck, I do have my doubts about Faldo.  He comes across as an arrogant arse, and that press conference yesterday was dreadful.  This, imo, is the yanks best chance for a few years, the role of the captain could prove crucial.  Here's to a quality weekend of highs and lows!

Thoughts?

It's the only golf I watch. I'll probably just see bits and pieces around wahtever else I am doing.

Faldo: That's no pairs list, it the sandwich order list. Honest guv.

Watching golf is really really dull

I cant get exited about supporting "europe" either.

i love golf, both playing and watching it.the ryder cup is fantasic.the 2006 victory was brilliant to watch and after the poor show at the world cup in ther footy was a much better watch.
have to say i agree with jan about faldo, yesterdays fuck up and press conference was embarrassing.
the yanks have tweaked the course to suit them. and their ott moronic golf fans will do their bit too.
still think we will win it but it might be tight.

I'm not really into golf at all, but I do tend to get a bit emotional on the Sunday afternoon.  When Sam T captained them to glory that was immense, felt like bursting into tears.  Weird, as I don't consider myself european.  Just find the whole event such a rollercoaster of a ride.  Love the Ryder Cup, defo in my top 5 sporting events.

Always remember the year the yanks won when David Duval got carried away and walked all over the putting green, even though we still has a putt to save the match.  For three days I hate the yanks even more than usual!  (on a country by country basis - nothing personal).

I got to admit that I do love watching the Ryder Cup.

But I've got to admit Faldo is coming across as a cock...and that he's picked Poulter instead of Darren Clarke, might be a mistake, but I can still see us turning them over again, despite that.

The role of captain is pretty irrelevant once he's made his picks (and Faldos got them right). As long as you don't pair 2 blokes who fucking hate each other you just hope your boys play good golf. Dont know why the British press try and wind Faldo up cos thats playing into America's hands.

Christ I'm looking forward to this. I don't think we'll walk it as easy as some anticipate but I do think we'll come out on top. Not sure about Ollie Wilson or little Soren Hansen... I think if Faldo had gone for 4 picks, and things had worked out differently, you'd never pick those 2. Mind you, the likes of David Howell did superbly in 2006 so who knows.

Casey and Poulter to shine I reckon, Casey's game is tailor made to take the course to pieces, as is Sergios and we all know what a talisman he is. Can't see any yanks taking any points from those 3, nor Westwood.

Just need Paddy H to show what he can do as his previous Ryder Cup efforts have been pretty poor, and someone to do a Monty and really take charge at the top of the bill.... step forward Garcia.

Oh... it was Justin Leonard who holed that 50 footer in '99. The cunt.

Disagree Dave, I think the team spirit aspect to the Ryder cup plays a major part, which is why US have been so poor (in result terms) in recent events.

Title: Re: The everso slightly official TEF Ryder Cup thread
Post by: DMR on Thursday, September 18, 2008, 14:23:55
Of course it does Jan, but where does that spirit really come from? Take the K Club. Did that performance stem from Woosie, or from the 12 players rallying round Darren Clarke? It's the boys on the course who really create the atmosphere and unity imo, Tom Lehman's a very popular guy in the US and commands respect, but it didn't stop his side getting raped. Ditto Hal Sutten in 2004, never a great player but universally regarded as a nice bloke.... we hammered them.

Of course it's nowhere near the same but the league golf I play is all matchplay, and we get the pep talks and all that from our pros. But tbh as long as I'm out there with one of my mates I'll always fancy us to win because it's who your with on the course that matters.

Word Dave, it doesnt matter if the captain is a complete knob ( IMHO Faldo isnt) the guys who play the golf make the results. The Yanks will have their usual hill billy followers who shout "get in the hole"  on the First shot on the 650 yard par 5, my god i wish some of those cunts would get in the hole and never get out again. Come on Europe!!!!!

Really? Care to elaborate on this theory? Half the yanks dont care about the cup, the other half are all pretty average.I think that it will be tighter than 2006 but a win for Europe is what i predict.

Because we have won it 3 times running. Just isn't right for Britain and Europe to win something so much and so many times in a row. Of course my theory is bollocks soapy tit wank.

I have a nice sized bet on USA to win. I don't like to talk stakes as I find this practice vulgar though I will say that I got this at 5/4, which was the best I could find ever since odds have been available on this event. Come on USA!

9 7 to the USA.

USA need to get to 14.5 whereas Europe (as holders) only need 14 to retain the trophy.

Well that's that then, unfortunately due to my Bro's wedding I didn't see any of the first two days of this years event.  I watched about 5 minutes of Sunday but had to switch it off, couldn't stand listening to the USA chants of the crowd, I suppose I could have muted it, but that would have been crap.

Hope the Welsh crowd are a lot more sporting than their american counter parts in 2010.

Yeah full of wankers and not sporting in the slightest.

Yanks are a funny breed though, even on holiday when we played water volleyball the yanks would get all mouthy and competitive, whereas the brits and europeans tended to be quieter and more sporting.  The best thing about this approach is we were much better than the yanks, they were awful.  Yanks you either love 'em or hate 'em.  (having said that one of my good friends is American and he's great, not big time at all).

It's partly the American players fault for whipping up a fucking frenzy everytime they hit a good shot, Mahan, Weekley and Kim in particular.

I didn't think it was that bad, Westwood got a bit of flack but a) that's because he's moaned about playing the US before and b) he played like a tool.

cannot blame faldo for the result.i'd not have sent wilson out with weekly as it was a big ask for him.his picks did alright though, particlulary poulter who was awesome.the crowd played a massive part in the victory as they clearly got to some of our players.cheering missed puts and poor shots, not being quiet when our playersd were playing shots.and the whole booooo thing was cringingly awful.the usa players get more respect when playing over here.also there were other things going on like changing tee positions without telling the euro team.

What do you mean? America always does what is best and any innuendo that there was any activity likely to benefit themselves is, quite frankly, extremely insightful.

Post by: Summerof69 on Monday, September 22, 2008, 13:26:33
The ones who let Europe down were Garcia, Westwood, and Harrington, who got 2 points between the lot of them, but yesterday players like Kim (4 birdies in the first 5 holes), Weekley (29 to the turn), Perry (4 under at the turn) were just too hot for the European players.

Title: Re: The everso slightly official TEF Ryder Cup thread
Post by: Foggy on Monday, September 22, 2008, 13:56:05
A bit harsh to say they let the team down. The event was taylor made for the yanks to win, and to be honest the Ryder cup needed this sort of result. I cant want for 2010 when the likes of Luke Donald and co will lead the way.

it's true.didn't you see the amount of times euro players had to ask for quiet?the captain of the yanks telling the crowd to cheer missed putts? the tees were moved after the practice days without telling the euro team.
it's not sour grapes and the yanks had some awesome individual performances.but they did all they could to bend the rules and get the win

My comments after being at Valhalla for the weekend (as well as the 3 previous Ryder Cups):

1. The Americans played better golf and deserved to win. They looked they were playing as a team this time instead of 12 individuals who didn't really get on with each other.
2. Of course they set the thing up to suit their players - it's called home advantage and we will do exactly the same in the next one.
3. Faldo is a bit of an arrogant cock and should stop trying to be funny because he just isn't. However, it was the no show from players like Harrington and Garcia that affected us more than any decisions he made.
4. There's not a big difference in the level of sportingness of the crowds between the US and Europe. They seem to be naturally a little louder than us, but at home the European crowds cheer an opposition miss as well - it's not cheering the miss, it's cheering the win for your guy.
5. The blokes from Leeds dressed as leprechauns were top lads.

imo.
